How to Check Whether a Mutual Fund App Is a SEBI-Registered Investment Adviser

Verify the legal entity behind a mutual fund app in SEBI’s Investment Adviser directory, then compare the official record with the app’s documents and service role.

To check whether a mutual fund app’s adviser is registered with SEBI, identify the legal entity that provides the advice, then search that entity’s name and any claimed registration number in SEBI’s official Recognised Intermediaries directory under Investment Adviser. Compare the result with the entity named in the app’s advisory agreement, terms, fee receipt and regulatory disclosures. The app’s brand and its registered adviser may have different names, so a badge or number in the app is not enough on its own.

What you are checking: the adviser, not just the app

A mutual fund app can be a place to learn about funds, receive personalized recommendations, distribute schemes or execute transactions. Those activities do not all establish that the app itself is a SEBI-registered Investment Adviser (IA). The relevant question is which legal entity provides the advice, what service it provides and whether that entity’s SEBI record matches the service documents.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Start with the entity named in documents rather than the name or logo on the app store listing. The consumer-facing brand may be operated by one company while a different legal entity supplies investment advice. SEBI’s directory allows searches using member or trade name and registration number, but it does not provide a universal brand-to-entity lookup procedure. The document comparison is therefore an important part of the check.

SEBI’s investor education page, Understanding Investment Advisors, describes IAs as SEBI-registered professionals who give personalized financial guidance and says they charge clients fees directly. It contrasts them with mutual fund distributors, who earn commissions from mutual fund sales. That is a useful starting distinction, not a rule that every app with mutual funds must register as an IA or that a distributor has no regulatory obligations.

Before you search: collect the identity and claim

Do not begin with a web search for the app’s marketing name alone. Open the app’s terms and conditions, regulatory or statutory disclosures, advisory agreement, fee schedule, invoice and receipt. Also check the “contact us” or support page and any email acknowledging your subscription. Write down the exact legal name, including words such as “Private Limited,” “Limited Liability Partnership” or “LLP,” and any stated trade name.

Capture the claimed registration number exactly as displayed, including letters, punctuation and spacing. Save the page or take a screenshot with the date visible. If the app uses several companies—for example, one for technology and another for advisory services—identify which one signs the advisory agreement and receives the advisory fee. That is the entity to test first.

A payment to a platform does not automatically show that the platform is the adviser. Your receipt may identify a parent company, a group company or a separate regulated provider. Conversely, an app may use a trade name that differs from the legal name in the directory. The objective is to connect the service you bought to the entity responsible for the advice.

Step-by-step: verify a claimed SEBI IA registration

  1. Find the legal entity that provides the advice

Look in the app’s terms and conditions, privacy or regulatory disclosures, advisory agreement, invoices or fee receipts, and support contact information. Record the full legal name of the entity responsible for personalized investment advice. If the app gives a registration number, save it exactly as shown. A brand name alone may not identify the adviser.

Look for wording that distinguishes “investment advisory,” “distribution,” “execution” and “education.” If the app describes recommendations as tailored to your goals, risk profile or portfolio, ask which entity is legally providing that personalized service. If the documents identify only a technology company, ask where the advisory relationship is actually formed.

  2. Open SEBI’s Recognised Intermediaries directory

Use SEBI’s official Recognised Intermediaries directory and select the Investment Adviser category. SEBI’s directory supports searches by member or trade name and by registration number. SEBI’s FAQ for Registered Investment Advisers also directs readers to this directory to locate an adviser.

The category displayed 1,048 entries on October 9, 2026, according to the directory. That is a changeable count of listed advisers, not a count of compliant apps, and it does not establish whether any particular app is registered. A different total on the day you check is normal because entries and directory data can change.

  3. Search by name and number

Search for the legal entity’s registered name or trade name. If the app provides an IA registration number, search that as well. When possible, use both searches: a number shown in promotional material is more informative when the official result also associates it with the entity named in the app’s documents.

Be attentive to spelling and the full entity name. Try the legal name first, then the trade name, and remove obvious punctuation only if the directory’s search requires it. A search result for a similarly named company is not a match unless the identity and relevant record details line up. Do not treat a partial name match as proof.

If the number produces no result, check for a copied digit, an omitted prefix or a transposed character. Then search the legal name independently. A clean name result with a different registration number is a discrepancy to resolve, not a reason to substitute the number shown in an advertisement.

  4. Compare the directory entry with the app’s documents

Check that the SEBI entry is under Investment Adviser, that its registered name corresponds to the entity identified in the advisory or service documents, and that the registration number agrees with the one the app claims, if one is given. If the app’s brand differs from the record, ask the provider to explain the relationship and identify which legal entity supplies the advice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare more than a logo. Match the legal suffix, registered name, registration number and the entity named on your fee receipt or agreement. If the agreement names Company A but the directory result names Company B, ask whether Company B is a group company, a service provider or the actual adviser. Request the explanation in writing.

A directory result establishes a listing for the named entity; it does not, by itself, prove that every service offered through an app is covered by that entity or that a particular recommendation is suitable for you. If the records do not align, pause before relying on the app’s registration claim and request clarification.

  5. Work out what the service actually does

Read how the service describes its recommendations and how it earns revenue. Is it giving personalized securities advice, distributing mutual fund schemes, offering general financial education, or simply facilitating execution? Look for disclosures about client fees, commissions and distribution relationships. These details help explain whether the service is acting as an IA, a distributor, or in another capacity.

Ask whether recommendations are generated for your stated circumstances or are general descriptions available to every user. Also ask whether the app receives commission when you invest in a suggested scheme. A fee, a commission or both should be considered alongside the provider’s stated regulatory capacity; payment structure alone does not replace the directory check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  6. Keep records and raise unresolved concerns

Save the relevant disclosures, agreement, fee receipt, claimed registration number and a copy or screenshot of the directory result. Note the date you searched and the exact questions you sent to support. Keeping the original wording matters if the app later changes its website or marketing page.

If the app’s provider cannot explain a mismatch, contact the adviser or provider first. SEBI’s investor education page says Investment Advisers must respond within 21 days and points investors to SCORES for an unresolved grievance. The 21-day period is stated on that SEBI page, accessed October 9, 2026. Include the documents and screenshots when describing the issue so that the complaint concerns a specific entity and claim.

How to interpret the result

What you find What it tells you What to do next
The legal entity and registration number both match an Investment Adviser entry The official directory supports the claim that this entity is listed as an IA. Confirm that the same entity is identified in the service documents and that the service you are using is described as its advisory service.
A name appears, but it is not the entity named in the app’s documents A similar or related name does not establish that the app’s advice is supplied by the listed entity. Ask the provider to identify the legal adviser and explain the relationship between the entity in the documents and the directory entry.
The claimed number returns a different name or no clear match The claim has not been verified by that search. Check the number for transcription errors and search the legal name separately. If the mismatch remains, request an explanation before treating the claim as confirmed.
No IA entry is found for the app brand This alone does not prove that the service is unlawfully operating: the brand may differ from the legal provider, or the service may be performing a different role. Identify the advice provider and determine whether its activity is advice, distribution, education or execution. Verify the provider’s stated regulatory capacity rather than relying on the brand-name search alone.
The service says it distributes mutual funds and gives related guidance Some advice incidental to distribution may fall within a conditional exemption described by SEBI; that is not the same as a blanket exemption for all services labelled as mutual fund distribution. Check the nature and audience of the advice against the conditions in SEBI’s August 2025 IA FAQ, summarized below.
The app displays a SEBI logo or “registered” badge without naming an entity A visual claim cannot be matched to an official record and does not identify who is responsible for advice. Request the legal provider’s name and registration number. Verify those details in the directory before relying on the claim.

Is the app an adviser or a mutual fund distributor?

The distinction turns on activity and regulatory capacity, not simply on whether the app contains mutual funds. An IA gives personalized investment advice in its registered capacity. A distributor’s business involves distributing mutual fund schemes and may involve commissions. Some distributors can give limited advice incidental to distribution without obtaining a separate IA certificate, but the exemption SEBI describes is conditional.

SEBI’s August 2025 FAQs – SEBI Registered Investment Advisers says an AMFI-registered mutual fund distributor does not need a separate IA certificate when advice is incidental to its distribution activity and provided to its clients under the stated conditions. The FAQ describes the incidental advice narrowly: basic advice about mutual fund schemes or products distributed by that distributor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The FAQ says IA registration is required where the distributor advises general investors, rather than only its mutual fund clients, or advises in securities beyond the covered mutual fund schemes. A service calling itself a distributor should not be assumed to qualify for the exemption without checking what it actually does and whom it advises.

For example, an AMFI-registered distributor giving a client basic guidance about the mutual fund schemes that distributor offers is the kind of limited activity addressed by the exemption. Advice marketed to the general public, or advice extending into other securities, falls outside the described boundary and requires closer scrutiny of IA registration. The app’s label is not enough; read the audience, products and wording of the service.

The FAQ also addresses titles used in distribution. SEBI states: “No person, while dealing in distribution of securities, can use the nomenclature ‘Independent Financial Adviser or IFA or Wealth Adviser or any other similar name’ unless registered with SEBI as an IA.” This is the wording in question 27 of SEBI’s FAQs – SEBI Registered Investment Advisers, August 2025. A title or marketing phrase can be a reason to ask questions, but the official directory and the service’s actual role remain central to verification.

Questions to send the app’s support team

If the documents are unclear, ask short, specific questions rather than “Are you SEBI registered?” A useful message is: “Please identify the legal entity providing personalized investment advice through this app, its SEBI Investment Adviser registration number, and the document in which that advisory relationship is recorded.” You can add: “If the app is acting as an AMFI-registered distributor, please explain whether the guidance is limited to advice incidental to distribution and which entity receives commissions.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask where the entity’s legal name appears in your agreement and on your receipt. Ask whether the app is only a technology or execution platform and, if so, which regulated entity is responsible for recommendations. Keep the response with your other records. A clear answer that matches the directory is useful; a refusal to identify the provider is a reason to pause.

Common verification pitfalls

  • Searching only the app-store name: The brand may not be the registered entity. Search the legal and trade names in the documents.
  • Trusting a number displayed in an advertisement: A number must be checked against the official record and associated name.
  • Accepting a partial name match: Similar company names can belong to different entities. Match the complete identity and documents.
  • Assuming mutual funds automatically mean IA status: Distribution, education and execution are distinct activities, and a distributor may have a conditional incidental-advice exemption.
  • Treating registration as an endorsement: A directory listing supports an entity’s regulatory status; it does not approve a fund, strategy or recommendation.
  • Ignoring the commercial relationship: Direct client fees and distribution commissions help explain the role being performed, but should be read with the formal disclosures.
  • Failing to preserve evidence: Save dated screenshots, receipts, agreements and support replies before escalating a concern.

Use these checks when comparing two apps

A simple “registered” or “not registered” label can obscure differences in who provides the service and how it operates. Compare the relevant facts for each app rather than inferring its status from its appearance or mutual fund features.

  • Legal provider: Which legal entity is responsible for the advice? Does its name match an Investment Adviser entry?
  • Service activity: Does it provide personalized advice, distribute schemes, offer general education or facilitate execution?
  • Regulatory capacity: Does the provider claim to be a SEBI-registered IA, an AMFI-registered distributor relying on the conditional incidental-advice exemption, or another kind of service provider?
  • Commercial relationship: Does the service charge you a fee, disclose commissions, or identify distribution relationships? SEBI’s investor page describes the usual distinction as direct client fees for IAs and commissions for distributors.
  • Record consistency: Do the registration number, listed entity name and app documents agree?

These checks answer different questions. A matching directory entry supports the provider’s IA-registration claim; the service documents help connect that provider to the app; and the activity and commercial disclosures help clarify what role the provider is performing. Two apps can therefore have different business models even if both let you buy the same mutual funds.

What the directory check can—and cannot—establish

SEBI’s Recognised Intermediaries directory is the primary official place to check an Investment Adviser listing. Its searchable name and registration-number fields let you test a provider’s claim against the regulator’s record. The result should be read as a record for an entity, not as a general endorsement of an app, its investment approach or a particular fund recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The directory does not supply a universal automatic match between every consumer brand and its legal provider. It also does not tell you, from the listing alone, whether a specific app feature is advisory, distributory, educational or merely transactional. Those questions require the app’s agreements, disclosures and an explanation of the service.

SEBI’s Investment Advisers Regulations page identifies the regulations as last amended on November 25, 2025. Regulatory requirements and individual registration records can change, so check the live directory and current SEBI material when you make a decision. The directory count of 1,048 on October 9, 2026 is only a dated snapshot.

The cited SEBI materials do not say that every mutual fund app must itself be registered as an IA. Nor do they supply a universal lookup that automatically maps every app brand to its legal provider. That is why the reliable check combines the official directory search with the provider identity in the app’s own documents and a clear understanding of the service being offered.

When to pause before investing

Pause if the provider will not name the legal entity, the claimed number leads to another entity, the agreement omits the advisory provider, or the service uses an adviser-like title while declining to explain its registration status. Also pause when the app’s description shifts between “advice,” “distribution” and “education” without saying which entity performs each function. Clarification is especially important before paying a fee or acting on a personalized recommendation.

If the provider gives a satisfactory explanation, repeat the directory search using the exact entity and number, then retain the evidence. If it does not, do not treat an unverified badge, logo or marketing statement as proof. Approach the adviser first and, for an unresolved grievance, use SCORES as directed on SEBI’s investor education page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a mutual fund app automatically SEBI registered because it sells mutual funds?

No. An app may distribute mutual fund schemes, provide education or facilitate execution without being an Investment Adviser. Identify the legal entity providing personalized advice and check that entity in SEBI’s Investment Adviser directory.

How do I check a SEBI RIA registration number?

Open SEBI’s Recognised Intermediaries directory, select Investment Adviser and search the number. Then confirm that the result names the same legal entity shown in the app’s agreement, disclosures and fee receipt. Search the entity name separately as well.

What if the app brand is not found in the directory?

The brand may differ from the legal provider, or the service may operate in another capacity. Find the provider named in the documents and search that legal or trade name. Ask the app to explain any relationship between the brand and the listed entity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How is an Investment Adviser different from a mutual fund distributor?

SEBI describes IAs as giving personalized guidance and charging clients fees directly, while distributors generally earn commissions from fund sales. An AMFI-registered distributor may provide basic advice incidental to distributing its mutual fund products under the conditional exemption described in SEBI’s August 2025 FAQ.

When must a distributor obtain IA registration?

SEBI’s FAQ says IA registration is required when the distributor advises general investors beyond its mutual fund clients or advises in securities beyond the covered mutual fund schemes. Check the actual audience, products and advice rather than relying on the word “distributor.”

Does a SEBI directory listing guarantee that a recommendation is suitable?

No. The listing supports the regulatory status of the named entity. It is not an endorsement of the app, a fund, an investment strategy or an individual recommendation.

What should I do if the registration details do not match?

Save the agreement, receipt, claimed number and directory result. Ask the provider to identify the legal adviser and explain the mismatch in writing. If the issue remains unresolved, SEBI’s investor page directs you to approach the adviser first and then use SCORES; it states that IAs must respond within 21 days.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an app call itself an IFA or wealth adviser without registration?

SEBI’s August 2025 FAQ states that a person dealing in distribution of securities cannot use the nomenclature “Independent Financial Adviser,” “IFA,” “Wealth Adviser” or a similar name unless registered with SEBI as an IA. Verify the underlying entity and record rather than relying on the title.

The Bottom Line

Check the legal entity behind the app, not just its brand. Search that entity and its claimed number in SEBI’s Recognised Intermediaries directory under Investment Adviser, match the result to the app’s documents, and determine whether the service is advice, distribution, education or execution. If the identity or role remains unclear, pause, request written clarification and use SEBI’s grievance route for unresolved concerns.
