To check a cryptocurrency address against U.S. sanctions lists, use the U.S. Treasury’s Sanctions List Search. Paste the address into the ID # / Digital Currency Address field and run the search. OFAC’s address search uses exact matching, so a result means the identical address appears in the searched list data. A blank result means only that no exact match was found at that time; it does not prove that the wallet is safe, unconnected to a sanctioned party, or clear under other countries’ rules.
This guide explains the public lookup, how to interpret a hit or no hit, and when a business needs broader screening and blockchain-analytics controls. It is informational, not a legal determination about any particular address or transaction.

What an OFAC address check actually answers
The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) publishes blocked-person and other sanctions lists. Its search tool includes a field specifically for digital-currency identifiers. OFAC FAQ 594 explains that an address entered in the ID # / Digital Currency Address field is checked for an exact match rather than the approximate or fuzzy matching used for many name searches. The lookup therefore answers a narrow question: does this exact character string appear as a digital-currency address in the OFAC list data you searched? It does not determine who currently controls every address in a wallet, identify every address connected through transactions, or check every sanctions regime worldwide.

- A listed address is an identifier associated with a blocked person or other listed party in the relevant record.
- OFAC says digital-currency address listings are not likely to be exhaustive. An address can be controlled by, connected to, or used by a sanctioned party without appearing as a listed identifier.
- On-chain proximity, a shared service, a prior transfer, or a commercial risk score can justify investigation, but none alone proves legal ownership or a sanctions violation.
How to check a crypto wallet address against OFAC
1. Copy the address and identify its chain
Copy the address directly from the wallet or transaction record. Check it character by character before searching; a missing character, extra space, or transcription error can prevent an exact match. Record the blockchain and currency as well. OFAC entries identify the currency, for example with labels such as Digital Currency Address – XBT or Digital Currency Address – ETH (FAQ 562–563, OFAC).
Do not assume that a similar-looking address on another chain is the same identifier. Preserve the original capitalization and format shown by the wallet or transaction system. The search compares the address value, not your description of it.
2. Open the official search page
Go to the OFAC Sanctions List Search. The page can search OFAC list data, including the Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons (SDN) List and relevant non-SDN lists.
3. Use the correct field
- Locate the field labeled ID # / Digital Currency Address.
- Paste the complete address into that field.
- Use the list-selection controls to include the OFAC lists relevant to your check.
- Run the search without altering the address.
For a digital-currency address, the result is an exact address match. Do not rely on the name-search box for this task. Name searches use different matching logic and can return approximate matches; address searches in the ID field do not use fuzzy logic (OFAC FAQ 594, OFAC).
4. Review every part of a result
If the search returns a record, open and read the underlying entry rather than treating the result count as the conclusion. Check:
- the listed person, company, or other entity;
- the sanctions list on which the party appears;
- the program code or codes;
- the currency and address label, such as XBT or ETH; and
- the exact address value and any aliases or identifying information in the record.
OFAC advises users to pay attention to program codes because they indicate how a listing is administered and how a potential match should be handled. Save the record, the search date and time, the address as entered, and the list version or page information used for your review.

5. Treat a possible match as an escalation, not an automatic legal answer
Confirm that the address, currency and listed party align with the transaction or customer information you have. A public search tool does not replace appropriate due diligence, and the tool’s result by itself does not resolve questions such as ownership, authorization, blocked-property status, or an applicable license. For a consequential transaction, pause activity according to your procedures and obtain advice from qualified sanctions counsel or contact the relevant authority.

A no-result screen supports only this statement: no exact address match was found in the OFAC list data searched at the time of the query. OFAC expressly says that digital-currency address listings are not likely to be exhaustive (FAQ 562, OFAC). The agency does not publish a completeness percentage for all addresses controlled by sanctioned parties.
Consequently, a clean search does not establish that:
- the address has never transacted with a sanctioned party;
- the address is not controlled indirectly by a listed person;
- other addresses in the same wallet or service are clear;
- the transaction complies with another country’s sanctions regime; or
- the address will remain unlisted after future list updates.
For a one-time personal check, document the limited result accurately: “No exact match found in the OFAC lists searched on [date and time].” Do not rewrite it as “not sanctioned” or “safe.” If the transaction is material, unusual, or connected to a business, continue with the risk-based checks described below.
How to interpret an address listing
The currency label matters
OFAC’s record identifies the network or currency associated with the address. An entry labeled Digital Currency Address – ETH, for instance, is not a generic finding about every address that resembles it. Compare the listed currency and exact identifier with the address in your records.

Read the entity name, aliases, identifying details and listing date. The address is an identifier attached to that record; it is not, by itself, a complete description of every person who may have used the address. Do not infer that an unrelated person is the listed party merely because funds passed through the address.

The program code matters
Program codes indicate the sanctions authority or program under which the party is listed. They help determine which restrictions and exceptions may apply. Record the codes and obtain advice when the transaction’s parties, location, currency or purpose create uncertainty.
Why exact matching creates false negatives
Address strings are unforgiving. The OFAC digital-currency field will not find a listed value if you paste a different address, omit a character, use the wrong chain, or search a related address instead of the listed one. A wallet can generate many addresses, and a service can move funds through intermediary addresses. The absence of one exact match therefore says nothing definitive about all related addresses.
Do not substitute a name search for an address search. OFAC’s name search can use approximate matching and a configurable threshold, while the digital-currency address field is exact. If you have a customer or counterparty name as well as an address, perform the appropriate name and address checks separately and reconcile the results.
When a business needs more than a public lookup
OFAC states that sanctions obligations apply to digital-currency transactions in the same way they apply to fiat transactions. U.S. persons and others subject to OFAC jurisdiction must block covered property of SDNs and entities owned 50 percent or more, in the aggregate, directly or indirectly, by blocked persons, and must avoid prohibited transactions. OFAC recommends controls tailored to a business’s risk; it does not prescribe one solution for every organization (FAQ 560, OFAC).
For a virtual-currency business, OFAC’s Sanctions Compliance Guidance for the Virtual Currency Industry describes a program that can include:
- screening customer and counterparty information;
- screening transactions and relevant wallet addresses;
- rescreening as sanctions lists and customer information change;
- risk-based transaction monitoring and investigation;
- documented escalation, blocking, rejection and reporting procedures where required; and
- historical lookbacks after an address or party is identified, which may reveal connections to previously unlisted addresses.
OFAC notes that blockchain-analytics tools may help identify and mitigate these risks, but software output still requires investigation, governance and documented decisions. A consumer’s one-time exact lookup does not perform ongoing monitoring or attribution. See the 2021 guidance at OFAC’s virtual-currency guidance PDF.

New York businesses have a specific supervisory reference
The New York Department of Financial Services’ April 28, 2022 letter on use of blockchain analytics is directed to virtual-currency businesses licensed under 23 NYCRR Part 200 or chartered as limited-purpose trust companies under New York Banking Law. It emphasizes risk-based analytics for customer due diligence, transaction monitoring and sanctions screening. It should not be read as a rule governing every cryptocurrency user or every business outside that scope.

These approaches answer different questions and should not be presented as interchangeable.

When evaluating a business process, compare the sanctions lists and jurisdictions covered, supported chains and address formats, list-refresh cadence, exact versus approximate match logic, transaction-history and attribution capabilities, explainability, escalation workflow and recordkeeping. The reviewed OFAC material does not endorse a particular vendor.
Checking sanctions regimes beyond OFAC
The procedure above is specifically a U.S. Treasury OFAC check. A clean OFAC result does not establish that an address is clear under the sanctions rules of the European Union, United Kingdom, United Nations implementation in a particular country, or another jurisdiction. Determine which laws apply based on the people, entities, locations, service provider and transaction. Then consult the relevant government’s official lists and guidance.
The available OFAC material does not provide a universal global-list procedure. Do not describe an OFAC search as a worldwide sanctions clearance.

Recordkeeping for a defensible check
For a personal, low-risk inquiry, a note containing the address, chain, list searched, result and timestamp may be sufficient for your own records. A business should align retention with its compliance program and applicable law. At minimum, preserve:

- the original address and chain or currency;
- the exact search field and lists used;
- the date and time, including time zone;
- a PDF, screenshot or exported record of any hit;
- the reasoning for clearing, escalating, blocking or rejecting the activity; and
- the person who reviewed and approved the decision.
OFAC’s search page displayed the SDN List as last updated October 8, 2026 at 12:47:27 PM and the Non-SDN List as last updated September 14, 2026 at 2:35:42 PM when those pages were reviewed. Those timestamps are volatile page data, not a guarantee that the lists remain unchanged; check the live page again before relying on them.
Common mistakes and fixes
Searching the wrong box
Symptom: You enter an address in a name field or receive irrelevant name results. Fix: Use ID # / Digital Currency Address for the exact address and perform name screening separately.
Assuming a no result proves safety
Symptom: A clean screen is recorded as “sanctions cleared.” Fix: Record only that no exact match was found in the searched OFAC data, then assess linked activity, customer information, transaction risk and other applicable jurisdictions.
Ignoring chain and currency
Symptom: A similar-looking identifier is treated as the same wallet. Fix: Confirm the network and compare the address with the currency label in the OFAC record.
Stopping at a search-result headline
Symptom: A possible hit is blocked or released without reviewing the record. Fix: Read the entity, list, program code and address fields, preserve the evidence and escalate uncertain cases.
Using one lookup for an ongoing program
Symptom: A business screens at onboarding but never rescreens or reviews transaction history. Fix: Design risk-based, ongoing controls that update lists, monitor transactions, investigate alerts and conduct lookbacks where appropriate.
A concise decision path
- Need a quick OFAC check? Copy the exact address, identify its chain and search the ID field.
- Exact hit? Review the full record, program code and transaction context; stop and escalate according to your obligations.
- No exact hit? Document the limited result. Do not call the address universally safe.
- Business, repeated transactions or higher risk? Add customer screening, transaction monitoring, rescreening, relationship analysis and documented investigations.
- Other jurisdictions involved? Check the official lists and rules that apply to those jurisdictions as well.
The practical rule is simple: use OFAC’s search as a precise list-identifier check, not as proof that a wallet, person or transaction has no sanctions connection.
