To check a GST rate before paying, first identify the likely HSN code for goods or SAC classification for services, then verify the matching entry and conditions in the current official rate notification. The GST Portal’s Search HSN Code utility can help you find candidate descriptions, but its result is a starting point—not a legally binding decision about your transaction.
How to check a GST rate before you buy
- Describe exactly what is being supplied. For a product, note its material, function, packaging and intended use, as relevant. For a service, describe the actual work or service included rather than relying only on a broad label. These details can distinguish similar classifications.
- Look up a likely code on the GST Portal. Go to GST Portal > Services > User Services > Search HSN Code. GSTN says the utility is available both before and after login. You can search by HSN or by description; for a description search, select goods or services. The tool returns suggested code and description matches.
- Compare the descriptions before choosing. Review the candidate’s technical and trade descriptions and any related codes. Do not select a result just because its wording sounds close: the best match depends on the details of the supply.
- Check the rate notification that applies on the transaction date. Find the classification in the GST Council’s central tax rate notifications and read the entry, exceptions and conditions. Check relevant amendments as well; the listing includes changes through 2025, so an older chart or saved rate may no longer reflect the applicable entry.
- Compare the invoice’s tax components with the supply context. Check the total rate and whether the invoice shows IGST or CGST plus SGST/UTGST, as appropriate for the transaction’s place-of-supply context.
GSTN explains that its search suggestions reflect descriptions used by taxpayers generating e-invoices and depend on the words entered. The utility describes prevailing practice; it does not itself determine the legally correct classification or rate for a particular transaction. See the GSTN advisory on the revamped Search HSN Code functionality for the tool’s scope and limitations.

How to read the tax split on an invoice
According to the Government of India’s GST service listing, an inter-state supply uses IGST, while an intra-state supply uses CGST and SGST or UTGST. The components may therefore look different even when the total GST rate is the same. Check the transaction’s place-of-supply context rather than assuming every invoice should show the same split.
What to do if the rate still looks wrong
If more than one plausible description fits, the candidates point to different rates, or a notification condition is difficult to apply, ask a qualified Indian GST practitioner or chartered accountant to review the actual supply and invoice. This is especially useful when the classification turns on details that a short product name or service label leaves out. GSTN explicitly states that its search output is not legal advice and is not legally binding.

Can you use the lookup to question a bill?
Yes. A buyer can use the same process to cross-check the rate shown on a bill before paying or when reviewing an invoice. The Ministry of Finance has highlighted hotel, restaurant and footwear bills as examples consumers may check. Those examples do not establish a universal rate for any of those categories: the specific supply and applicable notification entry still matter. For a bill, compare the item or service as actually supplied with the likely classification, the current notification and the invoice’s tax components.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a product name alone cannot establish the rate
There is no single rate that can be stated for this question without knowing the particular goods or service, its relevant characteristics, the transaction date and the place-of-supply context. A search result can narrow the classification, but the applicable rate comes from the official notification entry and its conditions. If the facts do not clearly fit one entry, treat the rate as unresolved rather than relying on a near match.
