The reliable way to check satellite internet at a specific home is a two-stage process: use the Federal Communications Commission’s National Broadband Map to identify providers reporting service at the location, then enter the same complete address in each provider’s own availability or plan checker. An FCC map result is a useful lead, not a completed order, installation survey, or promise of a particular speed.
Availability also has a physical component. A provider may report service to your address while your roof, trees, terrain, or other obstructions prevent a workable installation. Check service eligibility, the current offer, and the proposed equipment location separately before committing to a plan.

What satellite internet availability actually means
People use “coverage” to mean several different things. Separating them prevents the most common mistake: treating a colored map or provider name as proof that an installation will succeed.
Reported service at a mapped location
The FCC National Broadband Map displays fixed broadband service information reported by providers. Its fixed-broadband layer includes satellite service and can show which providers report service at a selected location, the technology used, and the maximum advertised download and upload speeds filed for that location.

This is a location-level report, not a live network test. The displayed figures are maximum advertised speeds supplied through the FCC’s Broadband Data Collection. They do not guarantee the speed your household will experience at every hour or under every weather and network condition.
Current ordering eligibility
A provider’s own address checker answers a different question: whether the provider currently offers a plan that can be ordered for the address under its present capacity, inventory, service-area, and commercial rules. The provider may ask for a full street address and return plan, equipment, installation, or availability details that do not appear on the FCC map.
A usable installation site
Satellite equipment needs a suitable view of the sky. Starlink says customers need an unobstructed view and directs them to its app to find a workable setup location. Hughesnet says a clear view of the southern sky is required. A house can therefore pass an address check but fail a practical site check.
Real-world performance
Even a successful installation does not turn an advertised maximum into a guarantee. Congestion, weather, network management, equipment placement, Wi-Fi conditions, and the plan’s data terms can affect day-to-day results. Evaluate performance claims as estimates and read the current provider terms before buying.
Step 1: Search the FCC National Broadband Map
The FCC map is the best first screen when you want to discover which satellite providers report service at a U.S. address.
- Open the FCC National Broadband Map. Use the address-search field rather than relying only on a broad view of your county or ZIP code.
- Enter the complete street address. Include the street number, street name, city, state, and ZIP code when requested.
- Select the matching result. The FCC says an address in its database appears in capital letters as a selectable result. Choose the result that corresponds to the actual building or service location, not merely a nearby road label.
- Use a fallback search if necessary. If you do not have a street address, search a town and state or use the map’s location view. A broad search helps you navigate, but it is less precise than selecting the exact service location.
- Turn on the fixed broadband view. Review the satellite entries and the provider, technology, and maximum advertised download and upload speeds shown for the selected location.
If the map returns several nearby points, inspect each one. New construction, apartment buildings, rural parcels, and subdivided lots can be represented differently. Do not assume that a result for a neighboring building applies automatically to your home.

Step 2: Record what the FCC result says
Before opening provider sites, write down the information attached to the selected map location. This makes it easier to compare the same evidence with a provider’s current answer.
- Provider names: Note every satellite provider listed, not only the first one shown.
- Technology: Confirm that the entry is satellite rather than cable, fiber, DSL, or fixed wireless.
- Maximum advertised download speed: Record the value exactly as displayed.
- Maximum advertised upload speed: Record this separately; satellite plans can have a much lower upload figure than download figure.
- Data-as-of date: Read the date shown by the live map. Treat it as part of the result because map data changes after provider filings and FCC updates.
- Location point: Check that the selected point sits on the correct property or building.
Fixed providers submit data through the FCC’s Broadband Data Collection twice each year. The FCC updates the map using provider filings, verification work, location updates, and information from the public. That process makes the map useful for discovery, but it also explains why a provider’s live order system can change before the next map refresh.
Step 3: Check the same address on each provider’s website
Use the exact address you searched on the FCC map. Do not substitute a ZIP code, a nearby business, or a general town search when the provider offers an address-level checker.
Starlink address check
Starlink’s availability map requests a service address. Enter the complete address and follow the result through to the current service or ordering information. Save the plan name, recurring charge, equipment treatment, installation requirements, and any capacity or wait-list language shown for that address.
If the result asks you to move a map pin, place it on the building where service would be installed. A pin on an empty parcel or the wrong side of a large property can produce a misleading result.

Hughesnet’s plan finder asks for street address, city, state, and ZIP code and returns locally available plan information. Enter all four fields exactly, then read the offer rather than relying on a general national plan description. The cited Hughesnet service page describes coverage in the contiguous United States, Alaska, and Puerto Rico; separate country sites are used for Latin American markets.

Other providers
If the FCC map lists another satellite provider, use that provider’s own address or plan tool as well. A provider directory, advertising page, or a neighbor’s experience is not a substitute for the provider’s current answer for your location.
Step 4: Reconcile different answers
It is normal for the FCC map and a provider checker to disagree temporarily. Use the following order of precedence:
- Confirm the address and map point. Correct a unit number, street suffix, ZIP code, or misplaced map pin before treating the results as contradictory.
- Use the provider’s current checker for ordering. If the provider says the address is unavailable, do not place an order based only on an older FCC listing.
- Look for capacity or plan restrictions. A provider may report a service footprint while limiting new orders in a particular area or offering only certain plans.
- Check the FCC data date. A filing can predate a network, capacity, or address-database change.
- Contact the provider if the result is ambiguous. Ask the representative to confirm the service address and whether the response means immediate ordering, a wait list, or only general coverage.
Conversely, a provider may show an offer while the FCC map has not yet incorporated the relevant filing or location update. Save a screenshot or written confirmation of the provider response and review the order terms before paying a fee.
How to read the FCC map without overinterpreting it
| Map item | What it tells you | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Provider name | A provider reported fixed service at the selected location. | That the provider will accept an order today or that capacity is available. |
| Satellite technology | The reported connection type is satellite. | Latency, weather resilience, installation quality, or actual throughput. |
| Maximum advertised download and upload speeds | The highest speeds the provider reported for that location and technology. | A guaranteed speed, minimum speed, or household Wi-Fi performance. |
| Data-as-of date | The currency of the displayed filing or map information. | That the provider’s live plan, price, or capacity has remained unchanged since that date. |
| Mapped location point | The premises or structure associated with the record. | That the point is placed correctly or that every unit in a property has identical service. |
The FCC’s Broadband Data Collection Help Center describes the map as showing the fiber, cable, DSL, satellite, or fixed wireless services available at each home or small business on the map. “Available” in that description means the provider-reported map record; it is not a substitute for a provider’s order confirmation or an installation assessment.
What to do when the FCC result is wrong
The FCC provides two different challenge routes. Choose the one that matches the problem.
Challenge inaccurate availability information
Use an availability challenge when the provider, technology, or service claim for the location appears incorrect—for example, the map says a satellite provider serves the address but the provider’s own checker rejects it. Follow the challenge instructions in the FCC map, identify the affected location, and describe the conflicting provider response. Include the date you checked and any written availability result you received.

Challenge an incorrect or missing location
Use a location challenge when the building point itself is missing, misplaced, duplicated, or associated with the wrong address. This is especially relevant for a new home, a rural parcel, a converted building, or a multi-unit property where the map point does not sit on the structure.

Retain the full address, the map’s data-as-of date, screenshots of the selected point, and the provider’s response. Clear evidence helps distinguish a data-location problem from a genuine capacity or installation limitation. A challenge can improve the map record, but it does not force a provider to accept an order.
Availability is not the same as an installable property
Starlink’s sky-view requirement
Starlink says the terminal needs an unobstructed view of the sky and recommends using its app to identify a suitable setup location. Walk the property and check possible roof, pole, wall, or ground locations rather than assuming the front roof is usable. Trees that are bare in winter can still block the view during the rest of the year, and a clear view from one window does not prove that an exterior terminal will have the required view.
Hughesnet’s southern-sky requirement
Hughesnet says installation requires a clear view of the southern sky. Check whether rooflines, trees, hills, or neighboring structures block that direction. Ask the installer or provider what happens if the proposed location cannot meet the requirement and whether any site-visit or installation charge is refundable under the current terms.
Why this check belongs before payment
An address checker generally validates the service location in a network and ordering database. It does not inspect your roof, trees, easements, landlord rules, or mounting surface. Confirming a usable site before accepting equipment or scheduling installation reduces the risk of a failed appointment or unexpected mounting work.

| Comparison point | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Recurring service charge | What is the normal monthly charge after any introductory period, and when can it change? |
| One-time fees | Are there activation, shipping, installation, site-visit, mounting, or other upfront charges? |
| Advertised speeds | What download and upload speeds are stated for this address and plan, and are they maximums or another type of estimate? |
| Data and traffic terms | Is there a data allowance, priority policy, throttling language, or other traffic-management rule? |
| Equipment | Is the terminal or router purchased, rented, leased, or included temporarily? What must be returned if service ends? |
| Installation | Is professional installation required, optional, or unavailable? Who supplies mounts, cabling, and weatherproofing? |
| Contract and cancellation | Is there a minimum term, early-cancellation charge, equipment-return deadline, or refund condition? |
| Restrictions | Are there address, capacity, portability, usage, or plan-specific limits? |
Calculate the first-year commitment
For a household budget, separate recurring and nonrecurring costs. A simple first-year estimate is twelve months of the applicable monthly charge plus activation, shipping, installation, equipment, taxes, and any required mounting work. If the provider advertises a temporary rate, calculate the months at that rate and the remaining months at the stated regular rate instead of treating the promotion as permanent.
Read the cancellation section before ordering
Look for the exact process and timing for cancellation, equipment return, and refunds. A low monthly price can become expensive if a failed installation leaves you responsible for shipping, a nonrefundable installation visit, or unreturned equipment.
Common reasons an address checker returns no result
The address is formatted differently
Try the standardized street name, directional, apartment or unit number, and ZIP code. Rural addresses may be listed under a county road, a 911 address, or a newer street name. If the provider permits it, ask support to search the service location manually.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The home is new or missing from the map
New construction can appear in local records before it appears in the FCC location database or a provider’s ordering system. Use the FCC location-challenge route for a missing or misplaced point and ask the provider whether it can verify the parcel through its internal address process.
The map shows service but the provider rejects the order
Check the map’s data date and ask whether the provider is limiting capacity, has a wait list, or serves only another structure near the selected point. The provider’s current written response controls your immediate ability to order.
The provider accepts the address but installation fails
Return to the site assessment. Recheck the required sky view, mounting surface, cable path, property permission, and any installer conditions. Ask for the provider’s remedy and fee policy before scheduling a second visit.
U.S. scope and international addresses
The workflow described here is for the United States and uses the FCC’s U.S. map. For an address in another country, use that country’s regulator or government broadband map and the provider’s local address checker. Do not assume that an FCC result, U.S. plan name, price, or installation rule applies elsewhere.
A practical decision checklist
- Search the complete U.S. address in the FCC National Broadband Map.
- Select the capitalized address result or the correct map location.
- Record satellite providers, technology, reported maximum download and upload speeds, and the map’s data-as-of date.
- Enter the same address into every listed provider’s current checker.
- Save the provider’s plan, price, fees, data terms, equipment rules, and order status.
- Resolve any mismatch by correcting the address, checking capacity language, and contacting the provider.
- Use the FCC availability or location challenge process if the map record itself is inaccurate.
- Inspect the property for the provider’s sky-view requirement and confirm mounting permission.
- Compare only the offers confirmed for the exact address, including first-year cost and cancellation obligations.
- Order only after the provider confirms current eligibility and you understand what happens if installation cannot be completed.
Bottom line
To answer “Is satellite internet available at my address?” use the FCC map for a provider overview, then treat the provider’s own address checker as the current ordering test. Finally, verify that your property has the required sky view and compare the complete address-specific costs and terms. Coverage, order eligibility, installation feasibility, and actual performance are separate checks.
