RAM, current memory use and storage are different
RAM is the short-term working memory that apps and the operating system use while they run. Files and applications are loaded from a slower disk or other storage into RAM so the processor can work with them. RAM is temporary: its contents disappear when the device is restarted or turned off.
Installed RAM is the hardware capacity fitted to the device. It normally remains the same whether you are idle or running many apps. This is the number you need when a software requirement asks how much memory the device has.

Current RAM use changes from moment to moment as apps and system services open, close and exchange data. A usage meter can be high even when the computer has ample installed RAM, or low immediately after a restart. It is useful for diagnosing a workload, but it does not tell you how much RAM is physically installed.
Storage is persistent space for the operating system, applications, photos and documents. Storage remains when the device is powered off. A phone advertised with a particular storage capacity does not thereby have that amount of RAM. Keeping these three concepts separate prevents the most common checking error.
How to check RAM in Windows 10 or Windows 11
Follow the Settings path
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Settings.
- Choose System.
- Open About.
- Scroll to Device specifications and locate the installed RAM amount.
Microsoft’s instructions apply to both Windows 10 and Windows 11. The value under Device specifications is the installed amount, so record it exactly as displayed, including the unit shown by Windows.

Do not confuse nearby details
The About page also includes System type. That entry describes the system architecture and is useful context when checking software compatibility, but it is not a second RAM measurement. Read the RAM line itself rather than substituting another specification from the same section.
If the number is not immediately visible
- Confirm that you followed System > About, rather than a storage page or a general Settings search result.
- Scroll to the heading Device specifications; the RAM entry is grouped there.
- Record the installed figure, not a number from an app’s performance screen that may represent current use.
- If you are documenting several computers, note the Windows version and the date alongside the RAM figure because configuration can change after a hardware upgrade.
The procedure is informational and does not change a setting. You do not need to install a monitoring utility or buy an accessory to complete it.
How to check RAM on a Mac
Read Physical Memory in Activity Monitor
- Open the Activity Monitor app.
- Click the Memory tab.
- Look at the bottom of the window for Physical Memory.
- Use the amount shown there as the Mac’s installed RAM.
Apple defines Physical Memory as “The amount of RAM installed.” It is the capacity figure to use when comparing the Mac with a program’s requirements or recording its hardware configuration.
Understand the other Memory-tab readings
Memory Used reports how much memory is occupied at that moment. It changes as applications and system processes run, so it is not a substitute for Physical Memory.

Swap Used reports space on the startup disk used to move data to and from RAM when the system swaps. Because it refers to disk space used for swapping, it is neither the installed RAM amount nor a measure of the Mac’s total storage capacity.
The Memory Pressure graph describes how efficiently memory is serving processing needs. It can help explain whether the current workload is placing pressure on memory, but it does not replace the Physical Memory reading.
Which value should you write down?
For a form, support request or software check that asks “How much RAM does this Mac have?”, write the Physical Memory value. If you are troubleshooting slow performance, you may separately note Memory Used, Swap Used and the memory-pressure state with a timestamp. Keeping those observations separate preserves the distinction between hardware capacity and current conditions.
How to check RAM on an iPhone or iPad
What Apple’s settings actually show
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap About.
- Read Capacity and available storage if you need the device’s persistent-space figures.
Apple’s iPhone guidance uses this screen for capacity and available storage. Those numbers describe storage, not RAM. Do not report the Capacity value as the phone’s memory amount.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSee per-app storage use when that is your goal
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap iPhone Storage or iPad Storage, depending on the device.
- Review the storage recommendations and the amount used by each app.
This second screen is also about persistent storage. It can explain why a device is running out of space, but it does not establish installed RAM. The cited Apple pages do not describe a built-in RAM field in either location, so an iPhone or iPad owner should not claim a RAM figure based on these screens.
When a form asks for iPhone or iPad RAM
First determine whether the form really means storage. If it asks for capacity, use the Capacity entry and label it as storage. If it specifically requires RAM, the two Apple guidance pages cited here do not provide a device-setting route for that value. Avoid converting or guessing from the storage number; those are different hardware resources.
How to check RAM on an Android phone
Why the path varies
Android phones are made by many manufacturers, and the Settings layout can differ by model and software version. Google’s general help explains how to check available storage and directs users to the device manufacturer for more information. It does not establish a single Settings path that works on every Android phone for installed RAM.

Use model-specific documentation
- Identify the exact phone model and Android version shown in your device information.
- Open the manufacturer’s official support site or the documentation supplied for that model.
- Search that documentation for the installed-memory or RAM specification and follow its stated Settings path, if one is provided.
- Record the value using the manufacturer’s label and unit.
Do not assume that a route such as Settings > About phone > RAM exists on every Android device. It may be present on one manufacturer’s interface and absent on another. A storage page can be useful for checking free space, but it cannot stand in for an installed-RAM reading.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If you only find storage information
That result does not prove the phone has no way to disclose RAM; it means the general Android instructions do not give a universal route. Return to the exact model documentation. If the manufacturer does not expose an on-device RAM field, treat the official model specification as the authoritative description rather than guessing from storage capacity.
How to interpret the number you found
| Label or concept | What it represents | Does it answer “how much RAM is installed?” |
|---|---|---|
| Installed RAM or Physical Memory | The device’s hardware RAM capacity | Yes |
| Memory Used | RAM occupied by apps and system processes at the time of measurement | No; it changes continuously |
| Swap Used | Startup-disk space being used to move data to and from RAM | No |
| Capacity or available storage | Persistent space for apps and files | No; it is storage |
| Memory Pressure | How efficiently memory is serving current processing needs | No; it is a workload indicator |
Use the installed-capacity entry when a requirement says “RAM,” “system memory” or “physical memory.” Use current-use readings only when investigating what the device is doing at a particular time. Use storage entries for questions about space for photos, documents and applications.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling storage “memory” on a phone
Phone interfaces often place storage information in a prominent About or Storage screen. Capacity and available storage are valid answers to a storage question, but not to a RAM question. Write the resource name next to every number in your notes: for example, “storage capacity” or “installed RAM.”
Using a changing meter as the hardware total
A current-use value can rise and fall while you work. On a Mac, Memory Used is explicitly separate from Physical Memory. If you need a stable hardware figure, return to Physical Memory or the Windows Device specifications entry.
Assuming all Android phones use the same menu
Android’s general support guidance does not promise one universal RAM screen. A path copied from another model can send you to storage or simply lead to a missing option. Verify the manufacturer and model before following instructions.
Recording a number without its context
When you save a result for a household inventory, technical-support ticket or software check, include the device model, operating-system version when known, the exact label you read and the date. This prevents a later reader from mistaking a storage figure or a temporary usage reading for installed RAM.

When checking RAM is useful
Knowing the installed amount helps you answer a software requirement, explain a performance complaint or compare devices you already own. The check itself is free because Windows, macOS, iOS and Android provide built-in information or direct you to the manufacturer’s documentation. A RAM check does not require a memory upgrade, external drive, memory card, phone accessory or diagnostic subscription.
For troubleshooting, capture two different kinds of evidence rather than blending them. First, record the installed capacity from the platform-specific path. Second, if the platform exposes it, record current-use indicators at the time the slowdown occurs. On a Mac, that can include Memory Used, Swap Used and the memory-pressure graph. The first set describes what the device has; the second describes what it is doing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What can change and what cannot
Restarting or shutting down clears temporary RAM contents and usually changes current-use readings when the device starts again. It does not change the installed hardware capacity shown by Windows or the Physical Memory value on a Mac. Likewise, deleting photos or uninstalling an app changes storage availability, not the amount of RAM fitted to the device.
A hardware upgrade can change a computer’s installed RAM, so an old inventory entry may no longer be accurate. If you are checking several machines, read each device directly and keep the exact label, unit, model and date with the result. Do not infer one computer’s capacity from another computer’s model name or from its free storage.
Support and menu changes
Settings labels can move as operating systems are updated. The Windows route remains the Microsoft-documented path for Windows 10 and Windows 11, while Apple’s Activity Monitor identifies the installed total as Physical Memory. Microsoft also notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; that support status does not alter where the RAM entry is found, but it is useful context when documenting an older computer.
On mobile devices, a missing menu is not evidence that storage and RAM are interchangeable. Apple’s cited iPhone and iPad screens expose capacity and available storage, not an installed-RAM field. Google’s general Android guidance points users to the phone maker because menus and available information vary. Use the documentation for the exact model and software version instead of relying on a path copied from another phone.
A practical recording template
For each device, write a line such as: Device model — operating-system version — installed RAM/Physical Memory — exact unit — date checked. For a Mac troubleshooting case, add separate entries for Memory Used, Swap Used and the memory-pressure state, with the time of observation. For an iPhone, iPad or Android phone, label Capacity or available space explicitly as storage. This simple format keeps permanent hardware information separate from readings that change during use.

If a support form has only one blank labeled “memory,” look for surrounding wording. “Capacity,” “free space,” photos or app sizes indicate storage. “Installed RAM,” “system memory” or “physical memory” indicates RAM. When the form remains ambiguous, ask the requester which resource is intended rather than entering a number from the nearest settings screen.
A final checklist
- Windows: Right-click Start, then Settings > System > About, and read the RAM amount under Device specifications.
- Mac: Activity Monitor > Memory, then read Physical Memory at the bottom.
- iPhone or iPad: Settings > General > About shows storage capacity and availability; do not label those values as RAM. The device-storage page shows per-app storage use.
- Android: Use documentation for the exact manufacturer and model because Google’s general help does not define one universal RAM path.
- Keep installed RAM, current RAM use, swap and storage as separate entries in any notes or comparison.
- Do not buy hardware or install an app merely to perform this built-in check.
The reliable answer is the platform’s installed-capacity field: Windows’ Device specifications entry or macOS’s Physical Memory reading. For Apple mobile devices, the cited settings pages answer storage questions rather than RAM questions, and Android requires model-specific guidance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is phone storage the same thing as RAM?
No. Capacity and available space in iPhone, iPad and Android storage screens describe persistent storage for apps and files. RAM is temporary working memory used while the operating system and apps run. A storage number must not be reported as installed RAM.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhich Mac number should I give when someone asks how much RAM it has?
Give the Physical Memory value at the bottom of Activity Monitor’s Memory tab. Memory Used changes with the workload, and Swap Used is startup-disk space used during swapping; neither is the installed total.
Can restarting change the amount of RAM installed?
No. Restarting clears temporary RAM contents and can change current-use readings, but it does not change the hardware capacity reported as Windows Installed RAM or Mac Physical Memory.
Why can’t I find a RAM option on my iPhone or iPad?
The Apple settings pages covered here provide Capacity and available storage in About, plus per-app storage in iPhone Storage or iPad Storage. They do not identify those values as RAM or provide a built-in RAM field, so do not guess from storage.
Is there one Android path that always shows RAM?
No universal path is established for every Android manufacturer and model. Google’s general help directs users to the manufacturer for device-specific information. Identify the exact model and follow its official documentation.
Do I need an app, memory card or upgrade to check RAM?
No. Windows and Mac provide the installed figure through built-in tools, while Apple mobile devices and Android phones require careful interpretation of their built-in information or model documentation. Buying hardware or installing a diagnostic app is unnecessary for this check.
What should I record for a support ticket?
Record the device model, operating-system version when known, the exact field label, the value and unit, and the date. Keep installed RAM separate from current use, swap and storage. On a Mac, timestamp any Memory Used or Memory Pressure observations.
The Bottom Line
For Windows, read the RAM amount under Settings > System > About > Device specifications. On a Mac, read Physical Memory in Activity Monitor > Memory. iPhone and iPad About screens show storage, not RAM, and Android requires instructions for the exact manufacturer and model.
