To check GST charged on an online order or cab ride in India, open the tax invoice or ride ticket, verify the GSTIN of the supplier named on it through the GST Portal’s pre-login Search Taxpayer tool, then compare the taxable value, rate and tax amount with the CBIC rate entry for the product or service and transaction date. A GSTIN lookup checks the supplier’s identity and registration status; it does not confirm that the invoice used the right GST rate or classification.
What to check on the invoice or ride ticket
Use the tax document, not just the checkout summary or the app’s fare screen. CBIC’s invoice rules specify details such as the supplier’s name, address and GSTIN; invoice number and date; description of the supply; taxable value; rate; and tax amount. On an online marketplace, the supplier named on the invoice may differ from the platform’s brand.

- Supplier: Record the legal name and GSTIN shown on the document.
- Transaction: Note the invoice date and number, and the item or service description.
- Calculation: Find the taxable value, GST rate and GST amount. Check separate item, fee, discount or adjustment lines rather than assuming the tax applies to the full cart or fare total.
CBIC’s Tax Invoice, Credit and Debit Notes guidance describes the prescribed invoice particulars and the special rule for passenger transport tickets.
How to check GST on an online order
- Open the downloadable tax invoice. Find the seller or supplier’s name and GSTIN, the invoice date and number, the item description, taxable value, rate and tax amount.
- Look up the supplier. On the GST Portal homepage, use the pre-login Search Taxpayer function and enter the GSTIN or UIN printed on the invoice. Review the profile and displayed registration status. The GST Portal Search Taxpayer guide explains the lookup.
- Compare the rate for the item and date. Use the goods classification and rate applicable on the transaction date, not a rate remembered from an older purchase. Check the relevant entry in CBIC’s GST Goods and Services Rates.
- Check the arithmetic against the taxable value. For a line with a taxable value of ₹1,000 and a stated GST rate of 5%, the tax on that line would be ₹50 before any applicable adjustment. If the invoice separates products or adjustments, check each line on its own terms.
There is a narrow invoice exception: CBIC’s sectoral FAQ says a registered supplier may omit a tax invoice for a supply below ₹200 to an unregistered recipient if the recipient has not asked for one. If the recipient asks, the invoice must be issued regardless of value. This is not a general exception for larger orders or registered business buyers. See CBIC’s Sectoral FAQs.

How to check GST on a cab ride
- Open the completed ride’s receipt or ticket. Identify the supplier shown, ride date, fare or taxable value, GST rate and amount, and any distinct fee or adjustment lines.
- Check the document format. CBIC’s passenger-transport rule allows the ticket, in any form, to serve as the tax invoice if it contains the other prescribed information. It need not be serially numbered or show the recipient’s address. The rule states: “Where the supplier of taxable service is supplying passenger transportation service, a tax invoice shall include ticket in any form, by whatever name called, whether or not serially numbered, and whether or not containing the address of the recipient of service but containing other information as prescribed under rule 1.”
- Look up the GSTIN if shown. Search the supplier’s GSTIN through the GST Portal’s pre-login Search Taxpayer tool. If the app receipt does not show a GSTIN, ask the app or supplier for clarification or the appropriate tax document; an incomplete receipt alone does not establish that the ride was unlawful.
- Compare the correct passenger-transport category. Do not assume every cab ride has the same rate. CBIC’s rate table lists specified radio-taxi and motor-vehicle passenger-transport services at 5%, subject to stated input-tax-credit conditions, and a residual passenger-transport category at 18%. The service classification, supplier arrangement and applicable conditions determine which entry to compare with the ride.
CBIC’s sectoral FAQ says a customer using taxi-aggregator services does not have to file a GST return or make a declaration. It also says the service provider may issue the ticket or invoice within one month after the service and cannot issue a consolidated invoice under the rule described there. These points do not determine whether a particular fare’s classification or tax calculation is correct.
How to decide whether the charge looks right
Check the transaction as a set of linked details, rather than treating a GSTIN search as a tax calculator:

- ✔ Easy-to-use interface
- ✔ Add or remove GST with one tap
- ✔ Supports multiple GST rates (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%)
- ✔ Quick & accurate calculations
- ✔ Ideal for businesses, freelancers & individuals
- Does the supplier named on the tax document match the GSTIN profile and its displayed registration status?
- Does the document identify the goods or service clearly enough to compare its classification with a CBIC rate entry?
- Is the rate applicable to the transaction date and, for a cab, consistent with the relevant passenger-transport category and its conditions?
- Does the tax amount follow from the stated taxable value and rate, taking account of separately listed lines, discounts or adjustments?
- For a passenger ride, does the ticket contain the other prescribed invoice information?
A matching GSTIN establishes neither that the specific item or ride has been classified correctly nor that the tax arithmetic is right. If the classification is unclear, ask the supplier to identify the basis for the rate rather than inferring the answer from the GSTIN profile.

Preserve the transaction record
Keep the invoice or ticket, order or fare breakdown, screenshots of the charge, the GST Portal lookup result, and any messages with the seller or platform.

Ask the supplier to explain or correct it
Contact the merchant or app and ask it to identify the product or service classification, taxable value, rate and calculation. If the document or amount needs correction, ask whether it will issue a corrected tax document or credit note where appropriate. The CGST Act prohibits an unregistered person from collecting an amount as tax and requires tax to be indicated in relevant documents; it also provides for credit notes where invoice tax exceeds tax payable, subject to statutory conditions. See the Central Goods and Services Tax Act.
Use the appropriate complaint channel
If a consumer-service grievance remains unresolved, the Department of Consumer Affairs describes the National Consumer Helpline as a pre-litigation grievance channel. Its page lists web, WhatsApp, SMS, email and telephone options, including toll-free 1915; confirm current contact details and hours on the National Consumer Helpline website. The Government Services Portal separately lists complaint tracking and e-filing with Consumer Commissions.

For a technical problem using GSTN services, use GSTN’s Report Issue / Complaint self-service page to report the portal issue and receive a ticket reference. It is portal support, not a channel for deciding a seller’s tax liability.

| Question | Official source | What it can establish |
|---|---|---|
| What details should the document contain? | CBIC Tax Invoice, Credit and Debit Notes and CBIC Sectoral FAQs | Invoice particulars, passenger-ticket treatment and the narrow below-₹200 invoice exception. |
| Who is the GSTIN registered to, and what status is displayed? | GST Portal Search Taxpayer guide | The taxpayer profile returned for a GSTIN or UIN search; not the correctness of a particular charge. |
| Which rate entry should be compared? | CBIC GST Goods and Services Rates | Rate entries by classification, which should be checked for the transaction date. |
| What can I do about an unresolved consumer grievance? | National Consumer Helpline and Government Services Portal | Consumer grievance channels and separate Consumer Commission services. |
Rates and portal details can change. The CBIC rate page should be checked against the date of the order or ride; the cited rate categories do not establish the correct classification for every supplier arrangement.
