Before paying for gold jewellery in Saudi Arabia, inspect the karat and Kingdom hallmark, locate the maker or importer mark, watch the item being weighed, ask exactly how mounted stones affect the quoted weight, and obtain a stamped invoice in Arabic with complete purchase details. These checks document what the seller is representing and help you spot missing disclosures. They do not, by themselves, prove the alloy’s laboratory composition.

If a piece still seems suspicious, preserve the item and paperwork and ask the relevant authority about formal sampling and specialist analysis. Saudi enforcement procedures describe laboratory weighing, melting and testing under SASO ISO 11426; a loupe, magnet, acid kit or consumer electronic tester should not be presented as an equivalent guarantee.

What to check before you hand over money

Use this sequence at the counter:

  1. Read the marks. Find the prescribed karat marking and the Kingdom hallmark. Ask to see the maker or importer mark as well.
  2. Match the item to the seller’s description. Confirm the metal type, stated karat, item description, weight and price.
  3. Watch the weighing. Request that the item be placed on the shop’s scale while you can see the display. Ask what the displayed weight includes.
  4. Separate gold from stones and other components. Ask whether the quoted figure is total mounted weight or the weight used to price the gold.
  5. Obtain a stamped invoice. Keep the invoice and the seller’s identifying details before leaving.
  6. Stop if the disclosures do not line up. A missing mark, unexplained weight, refusal to weigh in view, or incomplete invoice is a reason to delay the purchase rather than rely on a verbal assurance.

Saudi consumer guidance treats these as disclosure and documentation checks. A stamp is a claim that must be inspected, not an independent assay result.

How Saudi gold markings work

Karat marking

Saudi rules require precious-metal articles offered for sale to carry the Kingdom’s hallmark and to be marked according to the prescribed carat. The karat marking identifies the claimed purity category of the gold article. Read the number on the piece and make sure the same karat appears on the invoice and in the seller’s explanation.

Small marks can be difficult to read on a ring, clasp or thin chain. A 10× jeweller’s loupe can be useful for seeing the characters; it is only a viewing aid, not a purity or authentication device. Do not treat a familiar-looking number, font or stamp shape as conclusive proof that the mark is genuine.

Kingdom hallmark

The Kingdom hallmark is the required official marking for covered precious-metal articles. Look for it in addition to the karat indication, not as a substitute for it. If you cannot find or read a required mark, ask the seller to show it under magnification or explain why the particular article is exempt or subject to a different marking rule.

Maker or importer mark

Saudi buyer guidance also identifies a maker or importer mark as a check. Ask the seller to identify this mark and record the seller’s business details on the invoice. A maker or importer mark helps connect the item to the party that introduced or sold it, but it still does not independently establish the alloy’s composition.

Plated, composite and mounted articles

Plated articles have a separate marking requirement; they should not be represented in the same way as solid precious-metal articles. Some composite or mounted articles may require a content indication or an accompanying card. Ask what parts are gold, what parts are plating or another metal, and which document explains the construction.

Do not assume that a gold-coloured surface, a karat-looking number or a precious stone makes every component solid gold. The description on the invoice should make the sale understandable without relying on an informal sales pitch.

Questions to ask the seller

Short, specific questions reduce misunderstandings. Ask: “What karat is written on this piece and on the invoice?” “Where is the Kingdom hallmark?” “Which mark identifies the maker or importer?” “Is this total mounted weight or gold weight?” and “How were the stones treated in the price?”

Ask the seller to point to each answer on the item, scale or invoice rather than giving only a verbal reply. If the seller says a marking rule does not apply, ask for the reason and have the explanation written on the sales document. A clear answer is useful; pressure to pay before you can inspect or document the answers is a reason to pause.

Inspect the item and weighing at the counter

1. Ask to handle the marks before the item is packaged

Request a clear view of the karat and Kingdom marks and the maker or importer mark. Use magnification only to improve legibility. Photographing the marks may help you compare them with the invoice, subject to the shop’s policy, but a photograph is not a test of metal content.

2. Confirm what is being sold

Have the seller state the article’s type, claimed karat, total weight and price. Saudi amendments that began taking effect on 11 October 2025 address disclosure of product type, weight, carat and price in advertising. The number shown in an advertisement should not replace a check of the actual item and invoice.

Save a screenshot of an online or printed advertisement when possible, including the date, listed weight, karat and price. Compare it with the item presented in the shop. If the advertised terms changed, request an explanation and a corrected written description before paying.

3. Watch the scale

Ask for the piece to be weighed where you can see the display and ask the seller to identify the unit used. Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) guidance has called on gold shops to have measuring instruments undergo periodic verification annually. That annual verification notice provides calibration context; it is not proof that every individual shop’s scale is accurate at the moment you visit.

Note whether the shop weighs the article before or after adding a box, tag or other packaging. The relevant figure for pricing should be explained clearly and recorded on the invoice. If the display is unstable or obscured, ask for the reading to be repeated on a suitable, visible scale.

4. Ask about stones and non-gold parts

Mounted stones, beads, clasps, solder and other components can be included in a displayed total weight. Ask two separate questions: “What is the complete item weight?” and “What gold weight is used to calculate the price?” Request the stone description and the treatment of its weight in writing.

Monsha’at’s Saudi shop-operation guidance says that when non-valued stones exceed 5% of the item’s weight, their weight is deducted, and it calls for disclosure of the weight share of mounted stones. This is a rule or guidance threshold, not a statistic about fraud and not a substitute for a calculation on your particular item.

For a stone-set item, ask whether the stone has a stated description, purity information or recorded defect where applicable. Do not accept a lower gold weight without understanding whether it reflects a measured deduction, an estimate or a standard shop practice.

5. Reconcile the arithmetic

Before paying, compare the stated weight, karat, stone treatment, workmanship or other charges, and final price with the invoice. If the seller changes a number verbally but not on the document, ask for a corrected invoice or postpone the purchase.

What a Saudi gold invoice should document

Keep the stamped invoice in a safe place. Saudi consumer and trade guidance describes sale information that can include:

  • the seller’s name and identifying or commercial details;
  • the transaction date and other transaction information;
  • the article’s description and type;
  • the stated weight and karat or purity;
  • the price and any separate charges shown by the seller;
  • where applicable, the stone’s description, purity and disclosed defects; and
  • the treatment of mounted-stone weight or other non-gold components when they affect the sale.

Check that the invoice is stamped or otherwise issued as the shop’s official sales document and that it identifies the same item you inspected. A generic receipt that omits the karat, weight or seller details is weaker evidence of what was represented. Keep payment records and any written messages with the invoice.

An invoice records the seller’s representation; it does not turn an inaccurate representation into a laboratory finding. If a dispute develops, the document gives an authority or specialist a specific description to compare with the item.

What a hallmark can—and cannot—tell you

What it can tell you

A required hallmark and karat mark show that the article is making a regulated purity disclosure. Matching marks, a visible weight, a complete invoice and a traceable maker or importer mark provide a stronger purchase record than any one of those checks alone.

Monsha’at’s consumer guidance puts the basic point plainly: “The gold piece must have a karat marking.” Read that statement as a requirement to inspect, not as a promise that a visual check replaces independent testing.

What it cannot tell you on its own

Looking at a stamp does not independently verify that the stamp is authentic or that the alloy beneath it meets the stated carat. The same caution applies to a particular stamp shape, colour, scratch, magnet response, acid reaction or handheld electronic reading unless a suitable authoritative method and interpretation support the specific conclusion.

A magnet test, for example, may reveal that a strongly magnetic component is present, but a non-magnetic response does not certify gold. A scratch or acid kit can damage an item and can be misread, especially on plated or mixed pieces. Consumer electronic devices vary in calibration and operating method. None should be described as equivalent to the official sample-based process for a suspected item.

Saudi rules and current institutional roles

The Precious Metals and Gemstones Law assigns oversight of trade and product marking and sets requirements for hallmarking gold articles. Amendments announced by the Ministry of Commerce began taking effect on 11 October 2025. Under the announced division, the Ministry of Commerce oversees trade and retail-outlet inspection, while the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources oversees production-related industry and licensing.

The revised rules also address disclosure of product type, weight, carat and price in advertising, as well as invoice and gemstone-disclosure provisions. A news announcement is not a substitute for the current consolidated law and implementing regulations. For a legal dispute or a question about an exception, check the current official text and identify which ministry has jurisdiction.

When the item seems suspicious

Preserve the evidence

  • Do not polish away, file or otherwise alter the marks.
  • Keep the item, packaging, stamped invoice and payment record together.
  • Write down what the seller said about karat, weight, stones and price while the conversation is fresh.
  • Take clear photographs of the item and marks if permitted.
  • Keep an advertisement or quotation that influenced the purchase.

Understand the formal assay process

The Ministry’s enforcement description says inspectors can take a sample from a suspected article and send it for specialist laboratory weighing, melting and analysis under SASO ISO 11426. This is a controlled process for determining composition; it is not a promise that every buyer can walk into a laboratory and obtain a direct consumer test without an authority’s involvement.

Because sampling can affect the article, do not agree to destructive testing casually. Ask the competent Saudi authority handling your complaint how a sample will be taken, documented and returned, and what records you should provide. No named consumer-facing laboratory or automatic referral service is established by the guidance cited here, so avoid paying an unverified intermediary on the assumption that it is an official channel.

Use the right authority for the issue

Since 11 October 2025, the Ministry of Commerce oversees trade and retail-outlet inspection, while the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources oversees production-related industry and licensing. A retail-sale complaint about missing disclosures, an invoice or a shop’s conduct is different from a production or industrial-licensing matter. For legal wording, enforcement action or a dispute, consult the current consolidated Precious Metals and Gemstones Law and its implementing regulations and confirm which ministry currently handles the issue.

Common situations and the safest response

What you see or hear What it may mean What to do before paying
Only a karat number is shown The article may be missing the required Kingdom or maker/importer identification, or the mark may simply be hard to locate. Ask to inspect all applicable marks and have the seller record the claim on the invoice.
The displayed weight includes a large stone Total mounted weight may not equal the gold weight used for pricing. Request the stone description, weight treatment and calculation in writing.
The seller will not let you see the scale You cannot independently check the number being used for the transaction. Ask for a visible re-weigh or choose not to proceed.
The invoice omits karat, weight or seller details The document does not clearly preserve what was represented. Request a complete stamped invoice before payment.
A loupe reveals a neat-looking stamp The mark is legible, but legibility is not proof of composition. Complete the weight, stone and invoice checks; escalate genuine suspicion for formal analysis.
A magnet or acid test gives a reassuring result A simple test has produced a limited indication, not a certified assay. Do not treat it as conclusive; rely on regulated disclosures and an appropriate specialist process if needed.
The advertised price or weight differs at checkout The sale terms may not match the disclosure that attracted you. Save the advertisement, request an explanation and obtain corrected terms in writing.

A printable buying checklist

  • Is the karat marking present, legible and the same as the invoice?
  • Is the Kingdom hallmark present where required?
  • Can you identify the maker or importer mark?
  • Does the seller explain whether the article is solid, plated, composite or mounted?
  • Did you see the item weighed on a suitable scale?
  • Does the seller state whether the displayed weight includes stones or other components?
  • Has the seller disclosed the stone description, purity and defects where applicable?
  • Does the invoice show the seller, transaction details, item description, weight, karat and price?
  • Is the invoice stamped or otherwise issued as the shop’s official document?
  • Do the item, marks, spoken description, displayed weight and invoice all describe the same purchase?

Bottom line

The most reliable pre-purchase routine in Saudi Arabia is layered: verify the required marks, identify the seller or importer, watch the weighing, clarify how stones affect the gold weight, and leave with a complete stamped invoice. Treat every mark and do-it-yourself test as evidence to examine—not as independent proof. If the disclosures remain inconsistent or the item appears suspicious, preserve the paperwork and seek the appropriate authority’s formal sampling and specialist analysis process.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the karat stamp on Saudi gold mean?

It states the claimed purity category of the article. Check that the same karat appears on the item, the seller’s explanation and the invoice. The stamp is a regulated disclosure, not independent laboratory proof of the alloy.

What should a gold jewellery invoice in Saudi Arabia show?

Ask for a stamped official document showing the seller’s identifying details, transaction information, item description and type, stated weight, karat or purity, price, and—where applicable—stone description, purity, defects and the treatment of mounted-stone weight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a Kingdom hallmark prove that gold is genuine?

It is an important required mark, but visual inspection cannot establish that a stamp is authentic or that the metal beneath it meets the stated carat. Suspicious items require an appropriate specialist sampling and analysis process.

How should stones affect the quoted gold weight?

Ask for both the complete mounted weight and the gold weight used for pricing. Monsha’at guidance says non-valued stones exceeding 5% of the item’s weight are deducted and calls for disclosure of the mounted-stone share. Have the calculation written on the invoice.

Can I rely on a magnet, acid kit or handheld tester?

No simple consumer test should be presented as equivalent to controlled specialist analysis. Magnet, scratch, acid and electronic readings can be limited, damaging or misinterpreted, especially for plated or mixed articles.

Who handles a suspected retail-sale problem after the 2025 changes?

The Ministry of Commerce oversees trade and retail-outlet inspection, while the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources oversees production-related industry and licensing. Confirm the current jurisdiction and procedure with the competent authority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Check the karat and Kingdom marks, identify the maker or importer, watch the scale, document stone deductions and obtain a complete stamped invoice. If anything remains inconsistent, preserve the item and paperwork and ask the competent Saudi authority about formal sampling and specialist analysis.
