How to Check for a Section 143(2) Notice on the Income Tax Portal

Use e-Proceedings to check whether a Section 143(2) notice is listed for your assessment year, or use the Income Tax Department’s authentication service to verify a notice copy.

Sign in to India’s official Income Tax e-Filing portal, then go to Pending Actions > e-Proceedings. Open the proceeding for the relevant assessment year and check its notice section and description: a Section 143(2) notice should be identified as such. To verify a notice copy you already have, use the Department’s pre-login Authenticate Notice / Order issued by ITD service.

Find a Section 143(2) notice in e-Proceedings

  1. Go directly to the official Income Tax e-Filing portal and sign in.
  2. Open Pending Actions > e-Proceedings. The Department describes e-Proceedings as the service for viewing and responding to notices, intimations and letters. See the e-Proceedings help page and its response instructions.
  3. Review the entries for the assessment year in question and open the relevant proceeding or notice reference.
  4. Check the notice section and description. Confirm that the document identifies Section 143(2); a portal alert or a different Section 143 communication is not, by itself, proof that a 143(2) notice has been issued.
  5. Open or download the notice and keep a copy of the document and its portal details. If you plan to respond, follow the instructions and date in that specific notice.

The Department’s e-Proceedings user manual says proceeding details may include the assessment year, proceeding name and status, limitation and closure dates, notice or communication reference, section, description, document ID, issue and service dates, and response due date. The fields shown can help you identify the right item; use the notice document itself for its specific instructions.

Distinguish a 143(2) notice from other tax communications

Do not treat every income-tax message as a scrutiny notice. A communication about an adjustment under Section 143(1)(a), for example, is a different item. Check the section field and description in the proceeding and the notice document rather than relying on a general portal notification. The Department’s return-related guidance covers other return communications, including Section 139(9); a defective-return notice is not a Section 143(2) notice.

Verify whether a notice copy is genuine

If you received a notice by email, message or another route and want to check its authenticity, use the Department’s pre-login Authenticate Notice / Order issued by ITD service. The Department’s manual says it is available to registered and unregistered users and offers two lookup methods:

  • Enter PAN, document type, assessment year, issue date and mobile number.
  • Enter the Document Identification Number (DIN) and mobile number.

The Department’s authentication FAQ says communications issued on or after 1 October 2019 should carry a unique DIN. Use the authentication result as a check on the communication; if the result is unclear or fails, contact the Department using the official portal’s contact route or seek qualified tax advice instead of acting on an unverified message.

Understand the response date and portal controls

Use the response due date and instructions printed in the individual notice, and verify the applicable legal deadline for your circumstances and assessment year. The Department’s portal guidance does not establish one statutory deadline that applies to every Section 143(2) case, so do not infer a universal number of days from the portal.

The Department’s e-Proceedings FAQ says a submitted response cannot be edited. It also describes an electronic submission window that may close seven days before the proceeding’s limitation date, at 6 p.m.; the authority may re-enable the window, and where no limitation date is set it can close electronic submission. These are portal controls, not a substitute for the deadline in the notice or the law. Check the live proceeding and submit carefully.
