Before buying a token, identify it by its contract or mint address, then inspect its individual trading pools, recent activity, and largest holders. These figures help you assess how a market is structured; they do not guarantee that you can sell at a particular price or that the token is safe.
1. Confirm you have the right token
Search using the token’s contract address or mint address, and confirm the chain as well as the token page. Names and tickers can be shared or imitated, so a match on name alone is not enough. DEX Screener’s documentation says a token appears once it has been added to a liquidity pool and at least one transaction has occurred. That is a listing condition, not an endorsement of a token’s quality or legitimacy.
2. Inspect each relevant pool, not just the token page
A token may trade in multiple pools, across different pairs or automated market makers (AMMs). A market page can describe a single pool, so do not assume that its liquidity or volume represents the token’s entire market. For each pool that matters, note the chain, AMM, pair, quote asset, displayed liquidity or estimated TVL, and the time window used for volume. Keep pool-level figures separate unless a source explicitly provides an aggregate and explains what it includes.
3. Read liquidity and volume together
Liquidity and trading volume answer different questions. TVL estimates the value held in a selected pool; volume measures trading activity over a stated period. Neither alone tells you the price or quantity at which a future trade will execute. A pool can show activity but have limited liquidity, or show substantial TVL without sustained trading.

Compare matching time windows across pools, and use historical activity where available rather than relying only on one 24-hour snapshot. Solscan documents pool-level volume and TVL alongside historical token analytics: Solscan token analytics documentation. Trader or transaction counts, where shown, can add context to volume; a large volume figure by itself does not establish broad or persistent participation.
For range-based liquidity pools
Some concentrated-liquidity or bin-based markets place liquidity in specific price ranges. Check the individual positions and whether they are in range at the current price. An out-of-range position may not be actively available for trades at that price, even if it appears in the pool’s overall liquidity information.

4. Interpret holder concentration carefully
Review the largest holder shares and the distribution of balances rather than relying on holder count alone. Many wallets can hold negligible amounts, so a high wallet count does not necessarily mean ownership is meaningfully spread out. Holder depth and changes in holder trends can help put the distribution in context.
Then investigate the largest addresses. Solscan notes that top holders can include exchanges, liquidity pools, treasury wallets, and other ecosystem addresses—not just individual investors. Treat an unlabeled address cautiously; its balance alone does not reveal who controls it or why it holds the tokens.

5. Compare tokens or pools on equal terms
- Scope: Match chain, AMM, pair, and whether figures describe one pool or an aggregate.
- Liquidity: Compare estimated TVL and pool balances; for range-based pools, account for whether relevant positions are in range.
- Activity: Use the same volume windows and consider trader or transaction counts and whether activity persists over time.
- Ownership: Compare concentration and wallet depth, and identify labeled exchanges, pools, treasuries, or ecosystem addresses among large holders.
- Data context: Record which analytics or explorer page supplied each figure and when you viewed it; metrics can change.

Use those views to understand their stated scope, not as a substitute for checking the specific pool and addresses relevant to your comparison.
What these checks cannot tell you
The documented metrics describe markets and wallet distributions; they do not establish a universal safe threshold for liquidity, volume, or concentration. There is no evidence-based pass/fail cutoff in these sources that makes a token safe to buy. A dashboard reading is not a guarantee of executable price, future demand, or protection from loss.
