Solution-provider executives interviewed by CRN in November 2024 expected data-security tools to converge into broader platforms during 2025. They pointed to AI-related data exposure, sprawling cloud and SaaS environments, and the need to discover sensitive data and control who—or what AI model—can use it. That was a forecast, not proof that the market-wide shift happened; later vendor examples show overlapping capabilities, not complete convergence.

What the 2025 convergence forecast meant

In CRN’s November 8, 2024 report, executives described vendors expanding beyond separate point products toward platforms that bring more data-security capabilities together. Stratascale senior director for cybersecurity professional services Justin Flynn said, “Ultimately, a ‘bunch of these point products are converging into platforms.’” Optiv CISO Max Shier similarly said, “There is going to be a convergence of those tools and capabilities.” CRN’s report presented their expectations for 2025, not a measured market-wide result.

The capabilities in view included finding data, classifying it, understanding where cloud data resides and how it is secured, and governing which people and AI models can access it. This goes beyond stopping an outside attacker: weak access controls can also let an AI system expose sensitive information or use inappropriate data in analysis.

Why AI and data visibility were driving the discussion

AI projects increase the urgency of knowing what information exists and who—or which system—can reach it. An organization that cannot map sensitive data across its environments may struggle to prevent inappropriate model access or to understand what information could be exposed. Tevora executive vice president of sales Steve Stumpfl described client demand for data-security work as preparation for AI initiatives, saying, “And I think DSPM in general and AI are the two major ones.” These were executives’ observations, not the results of a representative survey.

#1 Best Overall
Fortinet FortiGate 60F Hardware, 36 Month Unified Threat Protection (UTP), Firewall Security
  • HARDWARE PLUS SECURITY SERVICES: FortiGate-60F Firewall Appliance bundled with 3 year of FortiCare Premium and FortiGuard Unified Threat Protection.
  • UNIFIED THREAT PROTECTION (UTP): Secures against advanced online threats with comprehensive web filtering and anti-botnet technologies.
  • OPTIMIZED FOR MEDIUM-SIZED BUSINESSES: Tailored for businesses needing robust security without the infrastructure of larger enterprises.
  • RELIABLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT: FortiCare Premium ensures high-quality support and service continuity.
  • EFFECTIVE PROTECTION: Employs advanced filtering technologies to safeguard against sophisticated threats.

Data security posture management (DSPM) was one part of that response. Shier described DSPM as helping organizations see where cloud data is stored and understand its security posture, but cautioned that it did not cover everything: “It does not have all the capabilities across all the data stores,” he said. He also described vendors adding roadmap items to close gaps between their existing specialties. A DSPM product can improve visibility without, by itself, providing complete protection, governing AI use, or resolving privacy and incident-response obligations.

What later vendor examples show—and do not show

CRN’s 2025 Security 100 roundup describes vendors operating across related but distinct areas. BigID is associated with data mapping and privacy capabilities; Cyera with DSPM and data-and-identity visibility; Rubrik with expansion from backup and recovery into DSPM; and Varonis with data discovery and classification. The roundup also covers identity and access capabilities. These examples indicate portfolio expansion and overlap, but do not establish complete interoperability or prove that the 2024 market-wide forecast came true. CRN’s 2025 Security 100 coverage also quotes Rubrik chief business officer Mike Tornincasa saying, “Data security is the future of cybersecurity.”

Trade up to WatchGuard Firebox M290 with 3-yr Total Security Suite
  • Enterprise-grade prevention, detection, correlation and response from the perimeter to the endpoint with our Total Security Suite.
  • Gain critical insights about network security, from anywhere and at any time, with WatchGuard Cloud.
  • Built-in compliance reports, including PCI and HIPAA, mean one-click access to the data you need to ensure compliance requirements are met.
  • Up to 18 Gbps firewall throughput. Turn on all additional security services and still see up to 2.4 Gbps throughput.

The same roundup reports that identity and access management (IAM) revenue grew 21.4 percent year over year in 2023, citing IDC figures available to CRN. That is a historical IAM figure, not a data-security market growth rate. The cited coverage does not provide a standardized comparison of vendors’ integrations or a quantified measure of data-security convergence.

What solution providers can do

Solution providers were positioned as assessors and implementation partners: they can help customers map where critical data resides, identify security and process gaps, and prepare controls for AI initiatives. CRN reported that Secuvy shifted to a 100-percent channel model in 2024, offering discovery, classification, and DSPM capabilities, and named Tevora, Schellman, Optiv, Wipro, and ePlus among its partners. Those are details reported at the time; they do not establish current partnership terms or offerings. CRN’s Secuvy coverage describes that channel strategy.

For a customer, the useful outcome of an assessment is not simply a platform recommendation. It is a clear view of important data, the systems and identities that can reach it, the controls that are missing, and which gaps need a separate product or operational process.

How to evaluate a platform or implementation

Because the vendors described in the coverage span different specialties, compare them against the organization’s actual data environment and workflows rather than assuming that a broad platform label means every capability is present.

  • Access and AI controls: Check how it identifies user and service identities with access, and whether policies can govern what AI models may use.
  • Integration: Examine how it connects to existing identity, privacy, cloud-security, backup and recovery, and security-operations tools. The cited vendor coverage does not offer a standardized integration scorecard.
  • Response and governance: Establish whether the workflow can help locate affected data and assess its sensitivity during an incident. A product can inform that work; it does not determine legal materiality on its own.
  • Implementation gaps: Agree on which weaknesses will be addressed through configuration, a separate tool, or a process change, and who will own each one.

Why incident assessment matters to U.S. public companies

There is a regulatory reason for public companies to take cybersecurity governance and incident assessment seriously, but it does not make DSPM a legal requirement. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s July 26, 2023 release says public-company registrants must disclose material cybersecurity incidents and annually disclose material information about cybersecurity risk management, strategy, and governance. A material incident generally must be reported on Form 8-K within four business days after the registrant determines it is material. A delay is available if the U.S. Attorney General determines that immediate disclosure would pose a substantial risk to national security or public safety. Annual disclosures include risk-assessment and management processes, material effects, board oversight, and management’s role. The SEC release does not require a particular DSPM product.
