Before buying gold jewellery in India, take three steps: verify the hallmark’s HUID in the BIS CARE app, get an itemized quote and invoice, and save the jeweller’s return or exchange terms in writing. BIS guidance covers hallmark verification and invoice details; it does not set a standard making-charge rate or a universal return window.
How do I check gold purity before buying?
Use the hallmark and its Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) as separate checks: inspect the marks, then verify the HUID through the official BIS CARE app. BIS says the app’s “Verify HUID” feature can be used to verify jewellery purity information before purchase. Match the result to the article in front of you; visual inspection alone does not authenticate a hallmark.
- Check every article. BIS guidance says each article in a pair should carry hallmark and fineness details. Check every piece in a set, not just one. Each detachable part should also be hallmarked because parts can be replaced.
- Ask the jeweller to show the marks. BIS says the shop should provide customers a magnifying glass of at least 10X magnification and display the relationship between fineness and caratage. A 10x jeweller’s loupe can be convenient for viewing small marks, but it is not a substitute for HUID verification in the app.
- Verify the HUID in BIS CARE. Use the “Verify HUID” function and confirm its result matches the jewellery details. The jeweller should also display BIS registration.
- Check weight carefully. BIS’s January 2024 jeweller guidelines specify a weighing balance with 0.01 g accuracy. Ask for the net precious-metal weight, distinct from stones and other non-gold components.
If you still doubt the marked purity, BIS says you may get the jewellery or a sample tested at a BIS-recognized Assaying & Hallmarking Centre on a chargeable basis. The centre should issue an assay report identifying the article as marked. BIS also describes compensation for a hallmarked article found below its marked purity: twice the value difference attributable to the purity shortfall for the article’s weight, plus testing charges. For a specific dispute, check current BIS rules and complaint guidance at BIS Consumer Protection.
What should be on a gold jewellery bill?
Ask for an itemized quote before agreeing to buy, then check that the final invoice identifies the article and records the required details. BIS guidance says an invoice for a hallmarked precious-metal article should include:

- Description of each article
- Net weight of precious metal
- Purity in carat and fineness
- Hallmarking charges
BIS describes an authentic invoice as necessary for dispute, misuse or complaint redressal. Keep the invoice and the written quote together.
Are making charges and hallmarking charges the same?
No. BIS explicitly says hallmarking charges do not include making charges or wastage charges. Hallmarking is not an all-in craftsmanship fee, and BIS guidance does not prescribe a universal making-charge rate or calculation method.

- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
For a useful like-for-like comparison, have the jeweller state each of these in writing:
- Gold rate used and the date or time it applies
- Net precious-metal weight, separated from stones and other non-gold components
- Making charge, and whether it is fixed, charged per gram, or calculated as a percentage
- Any wastage charge
- Taxes and any other charges
- Final payable total
Compare jewellers on the same basis: matching purity and HUID details, net metal weight, total price and charge method. BIS’s January 2024 jeweller guideline lists hallmarking charges of Rs. 45 per gold article and Rs. 35 per silver article. Those are the amounts printed in that dated guidance, not a guarantee of current fees; check the current BIS information and the amount shown on your invoice.

Can I return gold jewellery after buying it?
There is no universal return period established by the BIS guidance cited here. Whether you can return, exchange, resize or cancel an order depends on the jeweller’s terms and the transaction, as well as applicable consumer rules. A hallmark check establishes neither return eligibility nor craftsmanship.
Before paying, ask the seller to provide the policy in writing and clarify:
Rank #4
- Whether returns, exchanges, resizing or cancellation are allowed, and the deadlines for each
- Any deductions, fees or limits on refunds
- How the policy treats stones, custom work and damaged or missing packaging
- What proof or documents you must provide
Save the policy with the quote and invoice. If a purity dispute arises, use BIS’s current consumer-protection information for complaint channels and applicable rules rather than assuming the shop’s return terms resolve a hallmark issue.
