How to Change TurboTax Products: Upgrade, Downgrade & Transfer

To change your TurboTax Online product, open your return, select Switch Products, then choose Upgrade or Downgrade. If you’re using TurboTax’s immersive experience, switch to classic TurboTax first. These steps reflect TurboTax Support’s instructions updated September 25, 2026.

Upgrade or downgrade TurboTax Online

Open or continue your TurboTax Online return.

If you’re in the immersive experience, choose Switch to classic TurboTax from the left menu.

Select Switch Products.
Choose Upgrade and follow the onscreen instructions, or select Downgrade.

TurboTax says it prompts you for payment when you’re ready to print or e-file, except for Expert Full Service. Product names and menu labels can change, so use the options currently shown in your account. See TurboTax’s product-change instructions.

Remove Expert Assist

You can remove Expert Assist only if you have not talked to a tax expert. TurboTax’s instructions direct you to open File, go to the Just a few steps left… screen, select Review Your Order, and choose Downgrade on the order summary. If Downgrade is missing or you have already spoken with an expert, TurboTax says this removal option is unavailable.

Start over in a different product

If you have not paid, TurboTax allows you to clear the current-year return and start over in another product. Clearing erases information you entered for this year’s return; TurboTax says it does not affect past returns. Do not use this option unless you are prepared to lose the current-year information in that return.

Switch from TurboTax Desktop to Online

Moving from Desktop to Online is different from changing an Online product. TurboTax supports transferring a prior-year TurboTax tax data file into Online, not a current-year return or a PDF. The file must be the prior-year data file with a .tax[year] extension, such as .tax2024, and password protection must be removed first.

On a computer, sign in to TurboTax Online and start or open a return. The transfer does not work on a mobile device.

Choose Tax Tools, then Tools.
Select Transfer last year’s TurboTax return from your computer and follow the prompts.

If you have already entered information into this year’s Online return, the transfer clears it. If the transfer option is missing, TurboTax says you may need to clear and start over. Its instructions for importing a PDF from other tax software are a separate workflow and do not apply to transferring a TurboTax Desktop data file. Choosing between Online and Desktop

If you mean changing from TurboTax Online to Desktop, rather than changing an Online product, compare the filing format and workflow, the features you need for your tax situation, and whether you want to transfer prior-year information. Intuit provides an Online-versus-Desktop comparison. Features and product labels may vary by tax year, so check the current comparison and product options before switching.
