Pool addresses, ports, worker syntax and password rules are pool-specific, so do not copy connection details from an old tutorial.
What you need before changing anything
Have the following information ready before opening the miner’s configuration page:

- Exact miner model and firmware: Read the chassis label or the device information page. Menus and API commands differ between manufacturers, models and firmware generations.
- Current pool instructions: Obtain the pool’s official Stratum hostname, port, worker or account format, and password instruction. A pool may require an account name followed by a worker suffix, while another may use a different convention.
- Local management access: You need the miner’s local IP address and an administrator login for its web interface or authorized API. Keep the miner on a trusted network while making changes.
- A rollback record: Write down the working URL, worker name and password field before replacing them. This lets you restore the previous configuration if the new pool does not connect.
A worker is the pool-side name used to identify one miner or a group of miners. It is not a universal Bitcoin protocol string. The selected pool defines how the worker name should be written and whether the password field is meaningful, optional or required.
Get the pool URL, port and worker format from the pool
Open the pool’s current setup page while logged in to the correct account. Copy values exactly rather than retyping them from memory.

Pool URL and port
A Stratum endpoint normally combines a hostname with a port, such as the format shown in the pool’s instructions. Some pools publish separate endpoints for regions, connection types or failover. Use the endpoint intended for your location and miner type. Do not treat an endpoint shown in a historical guide as current: the Bitmain Support article “Connect ANTMINER A3 to Pools_Antpool,” created January 29, 2018 and updated April 6, 2022, contains examples that demonstrate the fields but should not be copied as present-day connection details.
Worker or user field
Follow the pool’s exact punctuation and capitalization. For example, the cited Bitmain guide illustrates a worker format like sub-account.miner name; that example explains the relationship between an account and worker label, not a universal value for every pool. Some services call this field “User,” “Worker,” “Username” or “Account.Worker.”
Password field
Use the password value specified by the pool. A pool may assign a worker password, accept a simple placeholder, or tell you to leave the field unchanged. Never assume that a password shown in a sample command is valid for your account.

Change settings in the miner’s web interface
Most web-managed ASICs place these fields under a page named Miner Configuration, Pool or General Configuration. Labels vary, but the sequence is consistent.
- Open the miner: In a browser on the same trusted network, enter the miner’s local IP address and sign in with the administrator account.
- Open pool configuration: Select the menu item for Miner Configuration, Pool or the equivalent page. Confirm that the page displays the expected model and firmware before editing it.
- Replace the primary pool: Enter the current pool URL and port in the first pool slot. Preserve the required protocol and punctuation exactly as published by the pool.
- Set the worker identity: Enter the pool’s account or worker string in the User or Worker field. Do not add a suffix unless the pool’s instructions require one.
- Enter the password instruction: Fill the password field as directed by the pool. If the pool says the field can be blank or uses a fixed value, follow that instruction rather than inventing credentials.
- Configure backup slots only when valid: If the miner provides second and third pool slots, use them only for real, reachable endpoints with the correct worker format. Check the priority order shown by the interface.
- Save or apply: Select the button labeled Save, Save & Apply, Apply or equivalent. Do not close the browser before the interface confirms the change.
- Restart as directed: Some interfaces restart automatically; others require a manual reboot. Wait for the miner to return online before judging the new connection.
Bitmain’s cited Antpool instructions specifically say, “Click Save & Apply to mine, the miners will restart.” That behavior is an example, not a rule for every miner.

Verify that the miner is using the new pool
A saved form does not prove that the miner is submitting shares. Verify the result in two places.
Check the miner’s status page
Open the status or dashboard page after the restart and inspect:

- the worker or user string;
- connection state, often labeled Alive, Active or a similar status;
- accepted and rejected share counters, when the firmware displays them; and
- hashrate or last-share time, if available.
Bitmain’s API documentation exposes pool status fields, and its support instructions direct owners to check Miner Status after applying a configuration. A pool can appear in a saved field while the miner is actually using a higher-priority backup, so confirm the active slot rather than looking only at the text you entered.
Check the pool dashboard
Sign in to the pool account and find the worker list. Confirm that the exact worker name appears and that its last-share time advances. Allow a short reporting delay after reboot. A worker that never appears, remains offline or shows only rejected shares requires troubleshooting before you assume the switch succeeded.
How the configuration differs by miner family
The same three values—URL, worker and password—are represented differently by each manufacturer. Use the section that matches your device and its firmware documentation.

Using a Bitmain API safely
The Bitmain API demonstrates that pool settings are explicit fields rather than hidden values. A typical read request targets /cgi-bin/get_miner_conf.cgi; a write request targets /cgi-bin/set_miner_conf.cgi. The documented pool objects contain url, user and pass, and the example includes three pool entries.
Before automating a change:
- Confirm the model and firmware support the documented routes.
- Read the current configuration and save a private copy for rollback.
- Prepare all intended pool objects, including valid backup entries, rather than deleting working fallbacks accidentally.
- Use HTTP Digest authentication as required by the documentation and keep the request on the trusted local network.
- Submit the change, inspect the response for success, and then check the miner’s status page.
Firmware behavior matters. Bitmain documents a caveat for firmware versions before May 20th: changing only the operating mode without changing the pool can reset pool settings. Treat that as a reason to read the exact firmware notes before combining pool edits with mode changes.
Using WhatsMiner and Avalon API routes
WhatsMiner
The WhatsMiner reference names the method set.miner.pools. Its pool objects include an address, worker and password, and the documentation allows up to three pools. The method’s parameter is encrypted and Base64-encoded. That requirement makes it unsuitable for copying a plain-text example into a script: use the official model/API documentation, authorized credentials and the manufacturer’s encoding procedure.
Avalon A10
The Avalon A10 manual documents a setpool command with pool address, worker name and worker password parameters. It explicitly states that the configuration takes effect after reboot. Plan for that restart, and do not diagnose the new endpoint until the device has completed it.

1. The URL or port is wrong
Compare the active value on the miner with the pool’s current official setup page. Check for a missing port, extra spaces, a misspelled hostname or an endpoint intended for a different connection method. If a pool publishes regional endpoints, use the one appropriate to your location.
2. The worker format is rejected
Copy the account and worker syntax exactly. A period, underscore, hyphen or capitalization difference can create a different worker or prevent authentication. Do not assume the account.worker pattern used by one pool applies elsewhere.
3. The password instruction was ignored
Review the pool’s guidance for the password field. Replace a stale value if the pool requires a worker password, or clear the field if the pool specifically says it may be blank. Avoid using a sample password from an old tutorial.
4. The miner is still using a backup pool
Inspect pool priority and the active or Alive indicator. A reachable but lower-priority endpoint may not be selected until the primary fails, while an invalid primary can send work to a backup. Temporarily configure only verified entries when testing, then restore valid failover slots.

Return to the configuration page and confirm that the new values persisted after saving. Reboot when the interface requests it or the model manual requires it. Avalon A10 pool changes, for example, require a reboot according to its API manual.

6. Network access is blocking the connection
Confirm that the miner has an IP address, gateway and DNS settings appropriate for the local network. Check whether outbound traffic to the pool’s published port is filtered. Do not solve a connection problem by exposing the miner’s management interface to the public internet.
7. The pool dashboard has not updated
Allow a short delay after the miner begins hashing, then compare the dashboard worker name with the exact value on the miner. If the miner shows an active connection and accepted shares but the dashboard remains empty, recheck the account or sub-account portion of the worker string.
Security practices for pool changes
- Change default administrator credentials before relying on remote management.
- Keep web and API access limited to a trusted local network or protected management path.
- Do not publish a miner’s management IP address, login, API key or worker password in a script, screenshot or support forum.
- Use encrypted or manufacturer-specified API parameters. WhatsMiner’s pool method, for instance, requires an encrypted Base64-encoded parameter.
- Back up the working configuration before bulk changes and test one miner before applying a script to a fleet.
- Use the exact firmware manual for the device; an API route documented for one model may be absent or different on another.
When to use the web interface instead of an API
The web interface is usually the safer choice for a one-off change because it shows the fields, pool priority and save behavior together. An API is useful for repeatable fleet administration only when the manufacturer documents the route for your exact model and firmware, the authentication is understood, and you can verify the response and resulting status. API access does not remove the need to check the pool dashboard.
Regardless of the route, the authoritative values come from the selected pool’s current instructions. The miner stores the URL, worker and password; it does not determine whether a pool’s endpoint or naming convention is still valid.
