To change the search engine Chrome uses for address-bar searches, open Chrome’s Search engine settings and choose another option. On a computer, select More > Settings > Search engine > Change. On Android or iPhone and iPad, open More > Settings > Search engine.
Change the default search engine on a computer
- Open Chrome.
- At the top right, select More (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
- Select Search engine.
- Under “Search engine,” select Change.
- Choose the search engine you want Chrome to use by default.
These steps change the browser-wide default used for searches typed in Chrome’s address bar. Google’s computer instructions also cover managing search engines and site-search shortcuts.
Change the default search engine on Android
- Open Chrome and tap More > Settings.
- Under Basics, tap Search engine.
- Select the search engine you want to use.
Chrome may add recently visited search engines to the available options. See Google’s Android instructions.
Change the default search engine on iPhone or iPad
- Open Chrome and tap More > Settings > Search engine.
- Select the search engine you want to use.
Recently visited search engines may appear among the choices. Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions provide the same settings path.

Use a site-search shortcut instead of changing the default
If you want to search a particular site without changing where ordinary address-bar searches go, Chrome on a computer lets you manage site-search shortcuts. Open Settings > Search engine > Manage search engines and site search. From there, you can add or edit a shortcut, set one as the default, deactivate it, or delete it. A site-search URL uses %s in the place where the search query goes. Google notes that Gemini cannot be edited, deleted, or set as the default search engine.
If the search engine you want is missing or the setting will not stick
The available choices vary
Chrome’s default and the choices it offers can depend on your country. In some countries Chrome uses Google Search by default; in others, it may ask you to choose a default. You can change the selection later. On mobile, a search engine you have recently visited may become available.

A work or school administrator may control the setting
An organization can choose or manage Chrome’s search engine settings on a work or school device. If Chrome indicates that a setting is managed, ask your administrator whether it can be changed.
An unexpected change is not proof of malware
If Chrome changes the search engine unexpectedly or will not apply your selection, Google says unwanted software may be one possible cause. That symptom alone does not establish that the device is infected. Follow Google’s guidance for unwanted software or restoring Chrome settings if the problem persists.
