How to Calculate Your Household Income Percentile by State

Use state-specific ACS household-income cut points for a consistent year and dollar basis. Interpolation can estimate a percentile between thresholds, but it is not an exact rank.

To estimate your household income percentile in a state, compare your household income with that state’s income-distribution cut points for the same year and dollar basis. The American Community Survey (ACS) is the clearest default for this question. If your income falls between two published thresholds, interpolation can provide an estimate—not an exact Census rank.

What a state household income percentile means

Your state percentile is your household’s relative position in that state’s household income distribution. It does not tell you your national percentile, and a national income curve cannot substitute for state-specific thresholds.

Use household income for a household comparison. Individual earnings and IRS adjusted gross income (AGI) from tax returns measure different things. A household’s percentile also depends on the data year and whether amounts are inflation-adjusted, so include both when you report a result.

Choose a consistent income measure and data series

ACS household income: the default for a state comparison

The Census Bureau’s ACS provides state estimates, as well as pooled five-year estimates for smaller geographies. Its 2024 one-year Subject Table S1901 reports household income in 2024 inflation-adjusted dollars and includes median, mean, and distribution categories. See the Census Bureau’s ACS data page and 2024 ACS one-year Subject Table S1901.

One-year and five-year ACS estimates cover different reference periods; choose one series and disclose it rather than mixing them. S1901 gives useful income-distribution context, but its median and broad categories do not, by themselves, establish a percentile for every possible household income. For a rank estimate, use state-specific published percentile cut points and verify their release, definitions, and dollar basis before calculating.

Other measures answer different questions

Measure What it describes When it may fit
ACS household income Household income distribution by state and other geographies. When you want to compare a household with households in its state.
IRS state AGI percentiles Adjusted gross income reported on individual income-tax returns. When your question is specifically about tax-return AGI, not household income. See the IRS Statistics of Income individual income-tax statistics.
BEA personal-income distributions Prototype distributions of personal and disposable personal income by household. When you want that distinct economic-income concept and are prepared to explain its methodology. BEA says its state prototype was updated in July 2026, adding 2024 and revising 2012–2023. See BEA’s Distribution of Personal Income page.

Census median and Gini statistics can describe state income levels and inequality, but neither summary identifies a household’s rank at an arbitrary income. The Census Bureau’s 2023 report on household income in states and metropolitan areas compares state median household income and Gini using 2022 and 2023 ACS estimates.

Calculate an approximate percentile

  1. Set the comparison. Choose your state, the income year, and a household-income definition. Use the same definition as the published thresholds.
  2. Select one ACS series and release. Record whether you are using a one-year or five-year estimate, and confirm the data year and dollar basis.
  3. Find the two state-specific cut points. Locate published thresholds that bracket your household income, using the same state and release. Do not use another state’s thresholds or a national distribution.
  4. Interpolate only if needed. A third-party explanation of the method uses linear interpolation between the two thresholds. The formula is:
estimated percentile = lower percentile + ((household income − lower income threshold) / (upper income threshold − lower income threshold)) × (upper percentile − lower percentile)
This assumes income is spread evenly within that bracket, which is only an approximation. The methodology describes precision as within a few percentile points, not an exact rank. See Beforeview’s interpolation methodology.
  5. Label the result. State the state, data year, dollar basis, ACS series, and that the percentile is approximate. If income exceeds a top-coded threshold, report that it is above the published cutoff rather than assigning a more precise percentile.

How to interpret the result

The median is only the 50th-percentile point

A state’s median household income marks the midpoint of its distribution. It does not reveal where an income far below or above the median falls; that requires relevant distribution cut points.

Keep the period and dollars attached to the number

A percentile compares income against a particular distribution, not an timeless state ranking. For example, the 2024 ACS one-year S1901 figures are stated in 2024 inflation-adjusted dollars. A result based on a different year or a five-year pooled estimate may differ because it uses a different reference period and distribution.
