How to Calculate UPI Payment Costs and Compare Them With IMPS, Credit and International Payments

A practical method for calculating UPI payment costs, distinguishing bank-account, PPI, credit and international transactions, and comparing them fairly with IMPS.

To calculate a UPI payment’s real cost, first identify the payment rail and funding source. A bank-account UPI transfer, a prepaid-payment-instrument (PPI) balance, a UPI-linked credit line, a RuPay credit card, and an international UPI transaction can have different rules. Then add any disclosed transaction fee, tax on that fee, interest or other financing cost, and foreign-exchange charge. Compare that total with the cost of another method for the same amount and use case.

NPCI’s published position is that bank-account-to-bank-account UPI remains free to customers and merchants. That does not make every UPI-linked credit or international transaction free, and a merchant-side interchange arrangement is not automatically a customer charge.

Identify exactly what you are paying for

Before doing any arithmetic, write down the transaction’s four defining facts. They determine which tariff and restrictions apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Funding source: bank account, PPI balance, credit line, or RuPay credit card.
  2. Recipient type: person-to-person (P2P) or person-to-merchant (P2M).
  3. Location: domestic or an international UPI Global payment.
  4. Channel and provider: the bank, issuer, payment app and, for IMPS, the channel used.

Do not substitute a merchant fee for a customer charge. A merchant may face interchange or acceptance costs while the payer sees no separate fee. Conversely, a credit product can impose interest or processing charges even when the act of linking it to UPI is free.

The calculation formula

For one payment, use this formula:

Total payment cost = transaction fee + taxes applied to fees + interest or other financing charges + currency-conversion or foreign-transaction cost.

Use the amount actually debited from your account or credit facility, not merely the price displayed by the merchant. If the provider publishes a percentage and a flat fee, calculate the percentage on the payment amount and then add the flat amount:

percentage fee = payment amount × disclosed percentage
transaction fee = percentage fee + disclosed flat fee

Add a tax only when the provider shows that tax or its rate. Add interest, a processing fee, or another financing charge only when the credit issuer’s terms make it applicable. Keep rewards or cashback outside the mandatory-cost total; treat them as a conditional offset only if the current card or bank terms confirm eligibility, value and any redemption conditions.

A repeatable worksheet for any payment

  1. Record the principal. Note the merchant or transfer amount, date, currency and whether it is P2P or P2M.
  2. Name the rail. Mark bank-account UPI, PPI-on-UPI, credit line on UPI, RuPay credit card on UPI, IMPS or UPI Global.
  3. Open the live tariff. Use the bank’s, issuer’s or app’s current schedule for the relevant account, card and channel. A general UPI page cannot establish an issuer-specific credit or IMPS charge.
  4. List every possible line item. Capture a percentage fee, flat fee, tax on fees, interest, processing charge, foreign-exchange markup and any recurring account fee that actually applies.
  5. Calculate the one-payment total. Add mandatory items; do not deduct a reward unless its terms establish that you will receive it.
  6. Scale recurring payments. Multiply the per-payment cost by the expected number of payments and add a recurring account fee only when the provider discloses one.

Save the tariff version or statement used. Fees can depend on account type, transaction size, channel, daily limits, merchant category and promotional dates.

Separate mandatory cost from conditional value

Make two totals in your worksheet. The first is the amount you must pay under the applicable terms. The second is an optional net-cost view that subtracts a reward only after it is earned and usable. This prevents a promised points rate from masking a fee, interest charge or redemption restriction.

For example, if a card gives a reward only on eligible merchant categories, do not apply it to a prohibited category or a P2P transfer. Record the earning cap, expiry and redemption conditions alongside the rate. If the issuer does not state a monetary value, leave the reward out rather than converting points using an assumption. This is especially important when comparing a credit-funded payment with a free bank-account transfer: a reward is uncertain value, while interest and fees are contractual costs.

What NPCI’s evidence says about each payment method

Bank-account-to-bank-account UPI

In its 29 March 2023 release, NPCI stated that bank-account-to-bank-account UPI transactions remain free for customers and merchants. The release described more than 8 billion UPI transactions per month at that time; that historical volume is not a current monthly statistic. For a domestic transfer genuinely funded by a bank account, the customer-facing transaction fee in that NPCI policy statement is therefore zero. Still check whether a separate account or service charge outside the UPI transfer applies under your bank’s terms.

Source: NPCI, “UPI is free, fast, secure and seamless,” 29 March 2023.

PPI balance used through UPI

NPCI’s UPI FAQ addresses the question, “As a customer, are there any charges to be paid by me for PPI on UPI transactions?” and answers: “There are no charges to be paid by the customer for UPI transactions.” In context, that statement concerns the customer using a PPI balance. NPCI’s 2023 release says interchange applies to PPI merchant transactions and that customers are not charged. Keep those two sides separate: a merchant-side arrangement does not become a fee on your payment receipt.

Credit Line on UPI

NPCI says, “Customers will not be charged for linking their account to Credit Line on UPI.” Linking is not the same as borrowing. The same FAQ warns: “Fees may vary by bank, users should inquire about any applicable interest rates, processing fees, or other charges with the issuer bank before applying.” Your worksheet should therefore include the issuer’s interest method, processing fee, repayment period, late charges and any applicable tax. No universal customer tariff is established by the NPCI page.

RuPay credit card linked to UPI

NPCI supports linking eligible RuPay credit cards in participating apps for merchant payments. Its product guidance lists prohibited categories, including person-to-person transfers. A card-linked merchant payment must therefore be checked for both eligibility and cost: issuer interest if you revolve the balance, processing or cash-advance treatment if stated, annual or account fees allocated to the transaction, and reward eligibility. The cited NPCI material does not establish one universal customer fee or reward rate, so use the issuing bank’s current card terms.

IMPS

IMPS is an instant, 24×7 bank transfer service. NPCI’s product guidance states a ₹5 lakh per-transaction limit for channels other than SMS and IVR. It directs customers to their bank for applicable charges, so there is no single NPCI customer tariff to insert into a comparison. Use the bank’s schedule for the exact account and channel, and check whether the limit or fee differs for mobile, internet, branch, ATM, SMS or IVR initiation.

UPI Global Acceptance

For QR payments at participating international merchant locations, the amount in rupees can differ from the merchant’s local-currency amount. NPCI instructs users to “Review your payment details, including the final amount in both foreign and Indian currency as well as applicable exchange rates or fees.” Treat the displayed conversion and fee as part of the cost before authorising; do not assume that domestic UPI’s treatment carries over across borders.

Worked calculations (illustrative arithmetic, not live tariffs)

Example 1: ordinary bank-account UPI

You pay ₹2,000 to a domestic merchant directly from your bank account. If the transaction meets the bank-account-to-bank-account scope in NPCI’s policy statement and your account has no separate service charge, the UPI transaction fee is ₹0. Your total payment cost is therefore ₹0 beyond the ₹2,000 purchase amount.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example 2: a disclosed percentage and flat fee

Suppose an issuer’s tariff for a particular credit-linked payment (this is an illustration, not a claimed market rate) says 1% of the amount plus ₹10, and your statement shows ₹10 tax on those fees. On a ₹5,000 payment:

  • Percentage fee: ₹5,000 × 1% = ₹50.
  • Flat fee: ₹10.
  • Tax shown on fees: ₹10.
  • Total financing or transaction cost: ₹70.
  • Total cash outlay including the purchase: ₹5,070.

Replace every illustrative number with the figures on your provider’s current schedule. If the fee is assessed only when you carry a balance, calculate a second scenario in which you repay by the due date.

Example 3: recurring payments

Assume a disclosed per-payment charge of ₹12 for six monthly payments and a disclosed annual account fee of ₹100. The recurring transaction cost is 6 × ₹12 = ₹72; adding the account fee gives ₹172 for the year. Do not add an account fee that is not allocated to the product or period you are evaluating.

Example 4: international UPI

At an overseas QR checkout, record both figures shown on the confirmation screen: the local-currency amount and the final rupee debit. The difference between the converted amount and the rupee debit is not automatically a fee; it can reflect the exchange rate. Add any separately displayed foreign-transaction fee or markup. If either currency total or the applicable rate is unclear, stop and obtain the provider’s explanation before approving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example 5: comparing a transfer with IMPS

Suppose you need to send the same ₹40,000 to one person. Put a bank-account UPI row and an IMPS row beside each other. The UPI row starts with the bank-account policy scope and then checks for any separate account service charge. The IMPS row records the bank’s current charge for the chosen channel, confirms that ₹40,000 is within the applicable limit, and notes any different fee for another channel. Do not fill the IMPS row with a national average or an old schedule; the bank’s live tariff controls the result.

Comparison table

Method What the cited NPCI material establishes What you must verify
Bank-account UPI NPCI’s 29 March 2023 statement says bank-account-to-bank-account UPI is free to customers and merchants. That the payment is actually bank-account funded and whether your bank applies any separate service charge.
PPI balance through UPI NPCI’s FAQ says the customer pays no charge for PPI-on-UPI transactions; the 2023 release discusses merchant-side interchange. Customer versus merchant treatment and the issuer’s current PPI terms.
IMPS Instant, 24×7 transfer service; ₹5 lakh per transaction for channels other than SMS and IVR. Your bank’s current fee, channel conditions and applicable limit.
Credit Line on UPI Linking the account is free to the customer. Interest, processing fees, repayment terms, taxes and other issuer charges.
RuPay credit card on UPI Eligible cards can be linked in participating apps for merchant payments; some categories, including P2P, are prohibited. Issuer fees, interest, rewards, merchant eligibility and restrictions.
International UPI Global QR payments are available at select international merchant locations. Final foreign- and Indian-currency amounts, exchange rate and any displayed fee.

Compare equivalent transactions, not labels

“UPI versus IMPS” is incomplete unless the amount, recipient and funding source match. Compare a P2P bank-account UPI transfer with a P2P IMPS transfer, or a merchant UPI payment with another merchant method. A RuPay credit card on UPI is not an equivalent substitute for a debit from your bank balance because borrowing and repayment terms can dominate a small transaction fee.

Use the same principal and record these columns for each candidate method: customer fee, tax on fee, financing cost, currency cost, time or availability, transaction limit and restrictions. NPCI identifies P2P and P2M as separate UPI categories in its statistics; do not use aggregate volume to infer that one category is cheaper for an individual payment.

Limits, availability and scale

The ₹5 lakh IMPS limit cited by NPCI applies per transaction to channels other than SMS and IVR; your bank can impose a lower operational limit. A failed transfer caused by a limit is not a pricing advantage for another rail, so include the maximum permitted amount and your own daily cap in the comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For context, NPCI’s statistics page reports 20,008.31 million UPI transactions worth ₹24,85,472.91 crore in August 2025, including 12,705.16 million P2M transactions worth ₹7,23,797.42 crore. These are system totals, not evidence that an individual customer pays a particular fee.

How to check a tariff without missing conditions

Read the fee table together with its definitions and exclusions. A heading such as “UPI,” “online transfer” or “card transaction” may cover several products, while a footnote can limit the charge to a particular account, channel or transaction type. Confirm whether the amount is per transaction, per day, per statement cycle or an annual charge. Check whether taxes are listed separately or already included.

For credit products, identify the date on which interest starts, the rate or method used, the minimum repayment requirement and the consequence of paying late. A payment that is free when fully repaid can have a different cost when the balance is carried. For IMPS, save the page or schedule that matches the initiation channel; a mobile-app transfer and an SMS or IVR transfer may not share the same limit or price.

At checkout, compare the confirmation screen with the final account statement. The screen can show a fee or conversion estimate, while the posted debit is the amount that belongs in your final calculation. If they differ, retain the transaction reference and ask the bank or issuer to explain the variance rather than silently averaging the two amounts.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Calling every UPI payment free: identify the funding source first; credit and international products have separate terms.
  • Using an old MDR figure: historical merchant-discount-rate notices are not a current customer tariff. Use the live bank or issuer schedule.
  • Counting interchange as your fee: determine whether the amount is charged to the payer, merchant or both.
  • Ignoring interest: a zero transaction fee can still be expensive if a credit balance accrues interest.
  • Assuming rewards: count rewards only after confirming category eligibility, earning rate, caps, expiry and redemption value.
  • Comparing unlike use cases: keep P2P, P2M, domestic and international payments in separate rows.
  • Relying on a generic tariff: account type, channel, amount and promotional period can change the applicable line item.
  • Approving an unclear international conversion: require both currency totals and the exchange-rate or fee disclosure before authorisation.
  • Ignoring a failed-payment cost: include only a disclosed retry, reversal or service charge, and do not invent a penalty merely because a transaction failed.
  • Mixing purchase price with payment cost: report the ₹5,000 purchase and the ₹70 fee separately, then show the combined outlay so readers can see what is actually being compared.

A practical decision sequence

  1. If the payment is a domestic bank-account UPI transfer and no separate account service charge applies, use the NPCI bank-account policy scope as the baseline.
  2. If it uses a PPI, confirm the customer-facing treatment in the issuer’s terms and keep merchant interchange out of your personal-cost total.
  3. If it uses credit, calculate the cost under both immediate repayment and carried-balance scenarios.
  4. If IMPS is the alternative, retrieve your bank’s current tariff and verify the channel and amount limit.
  5. If the payment is international, compare the final rupee debit with the local-currency price and include every displayed conversion cost.
  6. Choose the method with the lowest mandatory cost that is available for the recipient, amount, category and repayment plan you actually need.

A simple comparison template

For each candidate method, create one row with these fields: payment amount; P2P or P2M; domestic or international; funding source; provider and channel; transaction fee; tax on fee; interest or financing charge; foreign-exchange cost; recurring account charge allocated to the period; applicable limit; and restrictions. Add a final column for evidence, such as the tariff page date or statement line.

Run at least two scenarios when credit is involved: repayment by the due date and repayment after carrying the balance. Run a second currency scenario only when the provider gives a different quoted rate or fee. This makes the comparison auditable and prevents a temporary promotion, an assumed reward or an unverified bank charge from becoming part of the headline result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all UPI payments free for customers?

No. NPCI says bank-account-to-bank-account UPI remains free, and its FAQ says customers pay no charge for PPI-on-UPI transactions in that context. Credit-line, RuPay credit-card and international transactions can have separate issuer, interest or conversion costs.

Is linking a credit line to UPI chargeable?

NPCI says customers will not be charged for linking an account to Credit Line on UPI. Borrowing after linking can still attract interest, processing fees, taxes or other charges set by the issuer bank.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does IMPS cost?

There is no single customer tariff established by the cited NPCI product page. Check your bank’s current schedule for the account and channel. IMPS is described as instant and available 24×7, with a ₹5 lakh per-transaction limit for channels other than SMS and IVR.

Can I use a RuPay credit card on UPI for a person-to-person transfer?

NPCI’s RuPay credit-card-on-UPI guidance is for eligible merchant payments and lists prohibited categories, including person-to-person transfers. Confirm the participating app, merchant category and issuing bank’s terms before relying on the card.

How should I calculate an international UPI payment?

Record the local-currency amount and the final rupee amount shown at confirmation. Include any separately displayed exchange-rate cost, foreign-transaction fee or markup. NPCI advises users to review both currencies and applicable rates or fees before approving.

Should merchant interchange be included in my personal UPI cost?

Only if the provider actually charges it to you. NPCI’s bank-account and PPI statements distinguish merchant-side interchange or acceptance arrangements from the customer-facing charge. Do not add a merchant cost to your total without evidence that it is passed to the payer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I compare UPI with IMPS fairly?

Use the same amount, recipient type and funding source. Compare a P2P UPI transfer with a P2P IMPS transfer, or a merchant payment with another merchant method, and record fee, tax, financing cost, limit, availability and restrictions for each.

Should cashback or card rewards reduce the calculated cost?

Keep rewards separate from mandatory cost. Subtract them only when current issuer terms confirm eligibility, earning rate, cap, expiry and redemption value. Otherwise they are a possible benefit, not a guaranteed reduction.

The Bottom Line

Start with the funding source and transaction type, then use the relevant bank or issuer tariff. Bank-account UPI and PPI-on-UPI have NPCI statements supporting no customer charge in their stated scopes; credit-linked, RuPay card and international payments require a separate cost check. Add only disclosed fees, taxes, financing and currency costs, and compare equivalent P2P or P2M transactions at the same amount.
