This estimates the value of the gold content—not a retail price or a guaranteed offer from a buyer.
How do you calculate gold jewelry’s melt value?
First find a current pure-gold spot price and its currency. If the quote is per gram, use it directly. If it is per troy ounce, convert it to a price per gram by dividing by 31.1034768; the World Gold Council gives that conversion in its gold jewelry guide.
Then apply this formula:
Melt value = eligible gold-alloy weight (g) × (karat ÷ 24) × pure-gold price per gram
For a spot quote per troy ounce, the combined formula is:

Melt value = weight in grams × (karat ÷ 24) × (spot price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1034768)
Use a quote that identifies its currency and timestamp; gold prices change, so a calculation using an older quote is only an estimate based on that price. The Money Metals gold-price conversion page also describes converting a troy-ounce quote to grams.

How do karat and fineness determine the gold fraction?
Karat expresses the gold share out of 24 parts. Divide the karat number by 24 to get the nominal fraction used in the calculation: 18K is 18 ÷ 24, or 75%; 14K is 14 ÷ 24, or about 58.33%. The World Gold Council lists 18-carat gold as 75% gold and 14-carat gold as 58.30% in its chart. It notes that 14K is commonly marked 585, while 750 indicates 18K. The small difference between 14/24 and 585/1000 reflects the common marking convention.
A fineness stamp states precious-metal content in parts per thousand. For example, 585 indicates 585 parts per thousand, or 58.5%, and 750 indicates 75%. Marking practices, local minimum standards, and accepted tolerances vary by country, so a stamp should not be treated as a universal guarantee of a particular legal standard.

Which weight should you use?
Use the weight of the gold alloy, not automatically the total weight of the finished piece. A gram scale can provide a weight input, but it cannot determine purity; no particular scale model is established here as tested or validated.
- Exclude gemstones and identifiable non-gold components where possible.
- Calculate pieces of different karats separately, then add their estimates.
- Do not apply a surface karat marking to the full weight of plated, gold-filled, or vermeil jewelry. These constructions are not solid karat gold throughout, so doing so overstates their gold content.
- If you cannot establish the metal weight or construction without dismantling the jewelry, ask a jeweler to estimate the gold-alloy weight rather than taking the piece apart.

Worked example: a 10-gram 14K piece
Using the nominal karat ratio, the estimated pure-gold content is 10 g × (14 ÷ 24) = about 5.83 g. Multiply approximately 5.83 g by the current price of pure gold per gram to estimate the piece’s gold-content value.
If you instead calculate from a 585 fineness mark, 10 g × 0.585 gives 5.85 g of gold content. The difference comes from the common 585 marking convention; it does not turn the result into a retail appraisal or buyer quote.

What does the calculation tell you—and what does it leave out?
The result is an estimate of contained gold value, often called melt value. It does not account for gemstones, a brand, craftsmanship, or collectibility, any of which may matter to a retail price. A buyer’s offer may also be below the melt estimate and varies by buyer. The MeltValue.com gold calculator explanation distinguishes gold-content value from other jewelry value and buyer offers.
Keep three figures distinct when making a decision: the estimated metal melt value, the retail or replacement price, and the amount a particular buyer offers. The formula calculates only the first. It cannot establish what your jewelry will sell for.
How to compare estimates for different pieces
For a fair comparison, use the same gold-price quote and record its currency and timestamp. For each piece, compare the eligible gold-alloy weight and karat or fineness, and note whether stones or non-gold parts are included in the weight. If you are comparing sale outcomes rather than metal content, keep each buyer’s actual offer separate from the melt estimate.
