The answer depends on what “leveraged” means. If you buy a daily leveraged ETF with cash, your long share position can generally lose up to the amount invested, but not more. If you borrow from your broker to buy ETF shares, losses can exceed your cash contribution, and the broker may sell securities to protect its loan. The ETF’s advertised 2x or 3x target does not, by itself, tell you when that broker sale would happen.
To estimate a daily leveraged ETF’s investment performance, apply its target multiple to each day’s underlying return and compound the results. To estimate a margin liquidation threshold, use the loan balance and the broker’s current maintenance requirements and account rules. Those are separate calculations—and a fund’s own derivatives risks are a third, distinct issue.

First identify which risk you are calculating
“Leveraged ETF position” can describe two different arrangements. In the first, you pay cash for shares of a daily leveraged ETF. The fund uses derivatives to pursue its stated daily objective, but you have not borrowed money from your brokerage account to buy the shares. In the second, you buy ETF shares using a brokerage margin loan. You then have both the ETF’s market risk and a debt obligation to the broker.
| Position | What can cause a loss or sale? | Can the loss exceed your cash invested? |
|---|---|---|
| Cash-funded long ETF shares | The share value falls; in a severe case it could fall to zero. | Generally, no. The maximum loss on the shares is the amount invested. |
| ETF shares bought with a margin loan | The share value falls while the loan remains due; the account may fall below maintenance requirements. | Yes. Losses can exceed the cash contribution, and a forced sale may not eliminate the debt. |
| Fund-level derivatives exposure | The fund’s swaps, counterparties, and other prospectus-specific risks affect the fund’s net asset value or operations. | This is a risk to the fund and its shareholders, not the same calculation as your broker’s margin call. |
Keep these layers separate in any estimate: the ETF’s daily performance objective, your account’s borrowed-money exposure, and the fund’s own contractual and operational risks. U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission investor guidance discusses both leveraged ETFs and brokerage margin, but the applicable terms depend on the specific fund and account.

How much can I lose on a leveraged ETF?
If you paid cash for the shares
For a long position bought entirely with cash, the maximum loss is the purchase amount: a 100% loss if the shares become worthless. For example, if you invest $1,000 of your own money and hold no borrowed balance, a decline of 40% would leave approximately $600 before transaction costs, distributions, taxes, or other account effects; a complete loss would mean losing the $1,000 invested. A fund’s 2x or 3x daily objective does not turn that cash-funded share position into an obligation to pay the broker more than you invested.
This cap applies to the amount invested in the long shares, not to every possible position involving the same ETF. If you have borrowed to buy the shares, sold shares short, or used options, different obligations can apply. This article’s broker-liquidation calculation concerns a long ETF position purchased on margin.
If you borrowed to buy the shares
Margin changes the maximum-loss question because the loan is a liability separate from the ETF’s value. If the shares fall, your account equity can shrink faster than the share value, and you may owe more than the cash you initially contributed. A forced sale can reduce the broker’s exposure, but a sale does not guarantee that the proceeds will cover the outstanding loan and related obligations.

A daily leveraged ETF seeks a stated multiple of the underlying benchmark’s return for each daily reset period, commonly one trading day. If the fund’s stated daily factor is L and the underlying return on session t is rt, a simplified estimate before costs is:

Vn = V0 × ∏t=1n (1 + Lrt)
Here, V0 is the starting position value and Vn is the estimated value after n sessions. Convert each daily return to a decimal before using the formula: a 1% return is 0.01, and a 10% decline is −0.10. Apply the daily multiple to each session separately, then multiply the daily factors together.
- Identify the exact fund and objective. Check its current prospectus for the benchmark, leverage factor, reset period, fees, financing assumptions, distribution treatment, and other terms. A fund name or ticker alone is not enough to establish all of these details.
- Write down the underlying’s return for each session. Use the daily path, not just the benchmark’s start and end values. If you only know the benchmark’s total multi-day return, you do not have enough information to reproduce the leveraged fund’s path.
- Multiply each daily return by the stated factor. For a 2x daily objective, a benchmark return of −3% gives a simplified fund objective return of −6% for that session; a +3% day gives +6%, before other effects.
- Compound the resulting daily factors. Multiply the starting value by each daily factor in order. The factor for a −6% estimate is 0.94, and for a +6% estimate it is 1.06.
- Compare the estimate with the actual fund return. Treat the formula as an estimate of the daily objective, not a promised result. Account for expenses, financing costs, distributions, tracking differences, market conditions, and prospectus-specific terms where available.
Do not multiply the underlying’s cumulative multi-day return by the ETF’s daily factor and call that the ETF’s return. The daily objective resets; the resulting sequence compounds. As the SEC explains, there is always a risk that a leveraged or inverse ETF will not meet its stated objective on a given trading day. Even when each day meets its objective, the multi-day outcome can differ substantially from the benchmark’s cumulative return multiplied by the target factor.

Worked example: why the daily path matters
FINRA illustrates the point with a 2x ETP beginning at $100 while its index begins at 100. If the index falls 10%, it moves to 90 and the ETP falls 20%, to $80. If the index then rises 10%, it moves from 90 to 99, while the ETP rises 20%, from $80 to $96. The index is down 1% from its starting level; the ETP is down 4%.
| Session | Index level | Index daily return | 2x ETP daily objective return | ETP value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Start | 100 | — | — | $100 |
| After first session | 90 | −10% | −20% | $80 |
| After second session | 99 | +10% | +20% | $96 |
This is not a failure to meet the daily objective: the product returned twice the index’s return on each of the two days in the example. FINRA describes the difference as not “tracking error” when the ETP met its daily objective. The example is illustrative; actual funds have their own expenses, financing, tracking, and product terms.
How to measure a loss from a peak and the recovery required
A loss measured from your purchase price answers whether you are below your starting value. A drawdown answers how far the position has fallen from its most recent high. For a path of estimated or actual position values, find the prior peak and calculate:

Drawdown = 1 − (current value ÷ prior peak)
If a position peaks at $1,200 and later stands at $900, its drawdown from that peak is 1 − (900 ÷ 1,200), or 25%. This measure is useful because a position can rise well above its initial value and then suffer a large decline while still remaining above the original purchase price.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The gain needed to recover from a drawdown of d is:
Required recovery gain = d ÷ (1 − d)
For example, after a 50% loss, a position has half its prior value. It needs a 100% gain from that reduced value to return to the prior level. A smaller decline does not require the same-sized percentage gain to recover: the loss percentage and the recovery percentage have different denominators.
For a daily leveraged ETF, do not assume a recovery in the underlying benchmark will restore the fund to its earlier value. The sequence of daily returns and the fund’s daily reset determine the path. Use the product formula for each observed or assumed session, then calculate the peak and drawdown from the resulting fund-value series.
How volatility changes an estimate over time
When daily gains and losses alternate, compounding means the order and size of the daily moves affect the result. A simple daily-multiple formula is useful for illustrating this effect, but volatility is not a fixed annual charge that can be subtracted from every leveraged ETF return. Actual outcomes depend on the path, the benchmark’s direction, fund expenses, financing, distributions, tracking differences, and fund-specific terms.

A T-REX 2X Long APH summary prospectus dated August 5, 2026, gives a product-specific illustration of how assumptions matter. For a hypothetical year in which APH’s return is zero, its modeled 2x fund loss is 6.1% at 25% annualized volatility and 63.2% at 100% annualized volatility. Those figures are estimates under the prospectus’s stated assumptions, not forecasts or actual fund returns; the prospectus says actual borrowing and lending rates and costs would change the results.
The same prospectus reports historical APH annualized daily volatility of 27.21% for the five-year period ended December 31, 2025, while cautioning that historical volatility does not indicate future results. That historical statistic is not interchangeable with either hypothetical volatility assumption in the prospectus table, nor does it establish what the fund will return over a future holding period.
Use prospectus illustrations to understand sensitivity to assumptions, not as a personal loss limit. A modeled multi-month or annual result cannot supply a reliable liquidation price for your brokerage account, and no volatility number by itself determines whether a broker will require more collateral.

A broker’s margin call or forced sale is an account-level event. The main inputs are the loan balance, the market value and eligible collateral in the account, the maintenance requirement, and the broker’s house rules. The ETF’s target multiple affects the share-price path, but it does not set the broker’s maintenance threshold.

A simplified single-position calculation
For intuition only, suppose an account consists of one long position with market value M, a fixed margin loan of B, and a maintenance requirement of m expressed as a fraction of that position’s market value. Simplified account equity is M − B. If the broker requires equity of at least mM, the maintenance condition is:

M − B ≥ mM
Under those simplified assumptions, the position reaches the maintenance threshold when:
M ≤ B ÷ (1 − m)
This equation is a way to see how a loan and a maintenance percentage interact; it is not a universal broker liquidation formula. It assumes a single eligible position, an unchanged loan, one applicable requirement, and no other account assets, liabilities, concentration adjustments, interest accrual, or broker-specific treatment. A real broker’s agreement and current margin display govern. If any of those assumptions do not match your account, the equation cannot establish your actual call or forced-sale point.
Inputs to gather before estimating a threshold
- Current loan balance: use the amount actually borrowed, and account for any accrued interest or other margin debit included in the broker’s calculation.
- Current market value and shares: record the value of the ETF position and any other securities or eligible collateral the broker includes.
- Maintenance requirement: obtain the current requirement for this security and account type, including any higher house or concentration requirement.
- Account-level rules: read the margin agreement and broker’s current disclosures for how the requirement is applied, when a call may occur, and what discretion the broker retains.
- Potential price path: model plausible daily underlying returns with the fund’s daily factor to estimate changes in the ETF’s value; do not substitute an underlying cumulative return times the leverage factor.
Once the broker’s actual account rules are known, compare estimated position and collateral values with the requirement using the broker’s method. If those terms are not available, the responsible result is that a liquidation threshold cannot be calculated precisely—not a guessed ETF price. The SEC notes that brokers can change maintenance requirements without advance notice and can sell securities without first consulting the investor.

Can a leveraged ETF itself be liquidated?
There are two different meanings of “liquidated.” A brokerage firm may liquidate your account position by selling your ETF shares to address a margin deficiency. Separately, a fund’s derivatives arrangements and prospectus risks may result in a fund-level closeout or severe loss. One event concerns the broker and your account; the other concerns the ETF and its portfolio or counterparties.
The T-REX 2X Long APH prospectus describes a specific fund-level risk: a one-day decline in the underlying greater than 50% could theoretically cause losses exceeding the fund’s net assets before costs and a total loss of shareholder investment. It also describes counterparty rights to close swaps after a dramatic move and material decline in net asset value. Those disclosures are specific to that prospectus and product; they do not establish a universal threshold for other leveraged ETFs or a broker’s liquidation point.
For any ETF, read the current prospectus for its objective, derivatives, counterparty provisions, loss scenarios, and other risks. A fund-level risk description is not a promise that the ETF will automatically liquidate at a particular move, nor is it a substitute for the terms governing a margin account.
Compare leveraged ETF positions using the right variables
Before comparing two positions, separate fund characteristics from brokerage-account terms. Two products with the same stated daily factor can have different benchmarks, costs, financing arrangements, distribution treatment, tracking behavior, and prospectus risks. Two investors holding the same fund can also face different margin outcomes because their loan balances, account collateral, and broker requirements differ.

| Underlying benchmark | Whether it tracks a single stock, sector, or broad-market benchmark, and the exact benchmark named in the prospectus. | The benchmark determines which daily returns feed the fund objective; distinct underlyings can have very different paths and risks. |
| Leverage and reset | The stated factor and the period over which it resets. | A daily factor applies to daily returns, not automatically to a cumulative return over a longer holding period. |
| Path and volatility assumptions | The sequence of daily moves used in an estimate and any assumptions about volatility. | Daily compounding means different paths can produce different fund values even when the benchmark ends at a similar level. |
| Fund economics and distributions | Expenses, financing terms, distributions, and prospectus-specific treatment. | A pre-cost objective calculation does not include all the factors that can separate an estimate from actual returns. |
| Derivatives and counterparties | The prospectus disclosures on swaps, counterparties, closeout rights, and other relevant risks. | Fund-level outcomes depend on the specific product’s arrangements and disclosures. |
| Broker margin terms | Maintenance margin, house rules, loan balance, eligible collateral, and liquidation discretion. | These account terms—not the ETF’s multiple alone—are needed to assess broker liquidation risk. |
The SEC advises investors to read the individual prospectus because leveraged products can differ significantly. The broker’s margin agreement is a separate document and is necessary for account-level estimates.
Quick Recap
A practical calculation checklist
- Classify the position. Confirm whether the shares are cash-funded or supported by a brokerage loan. If there is no loan, the long-share loss ceiling is generally the amount invested; if there is a loan, assess both market loss and account maintenance.
- Locate current product documents. Verify the benchmark, daily factor, reset period, expenses, financing, distributions, and derivatives risks in the ETF’s prospectus.
- Build a daily scenario path. Enter one daily benchmark return per session and apply the fund factor to each return. Do not use only a multi-day benchmark percentage change.
- Compound to each date. Multiply the starting position value by each daily factor to create an estimated or actual value series.
- Measure the investment decline. Compare the current value with the purchase value for gain or loss, and with the previous peak for drawdown. If relevant, compute the recovery gain using d ÷ (1 − d).
- For a margin account, obtain the broker’s live terms. Use the actual loan, eligible collateral, maintenance requirements, and account rules. Do not infer a sale trigger from the ETF’s leverage multiple.
- Keep uncertainty visible. Label simplified results as estimates and identify what they exclude. Do not turn a hypothetical prospectus scenario or a simplified equation into a forecast or guaranteed threshold.
