The calculation uses the IRA’s value immediately before the contribution and immediately before its removal, adjusted for certain transactions during the period. In most cases, the IRA trustee or custodian determines the amount; ask them to process a return of excess and explain how they calculated and will report it.
The IRS’s 2025 example shows a $400 contribution return with $75 of NIA, for a total distribution of $475. That is a worksheet example, not a typical or guaranteed result: NIA can be negative if the account value declined. IRS Publication 590-A (2025), Worksheet 1-4

Use the IRS net-income-attributable formula
Worksheet 1-4 in IRS Publication 590-A calculates the net income attributable to the contribution being returned. In plain terms, it applies the IRA’s adjusted percentage gain or loss over the relevant period to the amount of the excess contribution that is being removed.

The total correction distribution is the contribution amount being returned plus the NIA:
Total correction distribution = contribution amount being returned + NIA
Use the amount being returned in the formula—not the entire IRA balance. The adjusted opening and closing values are not simply the account’s current balance and the contribution amount. Each includes specified transactions, as described below. The IRS worksheet is the formal calculation structure, but the IRS says the custodian determines NIA in most cases. What the calculation is measuring
NIA is an allocation of the IRA’s gain or loss to the contribution being corrected. It is not a performance report for the entire account, and it is not necessarily the difference between the contribution and today’s balance. The worksheet first measures the account’s adjusted percentage change during the period the contribution was in the IRA. It then applies that percentage to the specific contribution being returned.
That distinction matters when the account contains other money. Existing investments, later contributions, distributions, transfers, and recharacterizations can all affect the account values used in the worksheet. The objective is to isolate the portion of the account’s change that the IRS method attributes to the contribution under correction.
Gather the right dates and amounts
Before doing arithmetic, identify the contribution and the exact period covered by the correction. Write down the contribution date, the amount that will be returned, the tax year to which the contribution belongs, and the date the custodian will remove it. Then obtain the IRA’s fair market value immediately before the contribution and immediately before the removal.
“Immediately before” is important. A statement issued at month-end or a website balance viewed today may not be the value the worksheet requires. Ask the custodian which valuation date and account value it will use, especially if a trade, dividend, transfer, or distribution occurred around either date.
Also assemble a transaction history for the period in which the contribution remained in the IRA. The worksheet calls for specific additions to the opening and closing values. Having the history lets you check whether the custodian included every relevant item and helps prevent a calculation based on a convenient but incorrect balance.
Adjusted opening value
Start with the IRA’s fair market value immediately before the contribution was made. Add:

- the contribution being returned;
- other contributions made while that contribution was in the IRA;
- transfers made while it was in the IRA; and
- recharacterizations made while it was in the IRA.
The result is the adjusted opening value. The contribution being returned is included in this opening-side calculation because the worksheet is measuring the account after that money entered the IRA, while also accounting for other money that entered during the same period.
Adjusted closing value
Start with the IRA’s fair market value immediately before the contribution is removed. Add:

- transfers made while it was in the IRA; and
- recharacterizations made while it was in the IRA.
The result is the adjusted closing value. These adjustments are why simply comparing the balance before the contribution with the balance on the day you request a correction can produce a different result from the IRS method.
Calculate NIA step by step
- Identify the contribution being corrected. Use the excess amount that will actually be returned, not the total value of the IRA and not automatically every contribution made during the year.
- Find the opening fair market value. Use the IRA value immediately before the contribution under correction was deposited.
- List opening-side transactions. Add the contribution being returned and the other contributions, transfers, and recharacterizations specified by Worksheet 1-4.
- Calculate the adjusted opening value. This is the denominator used to measure the account’s percentage change.
- Find the closing fair market value. Use the IRA value immediately before the custodian removes the contribution.
- List closing-side transactions. Add distributions, transfers, and recharacterizations made while the contribution was in the IRA.
- Calculate the adjusted closing value. Check that the transaction dates fall within the relevant period.
- Find the adjusted change. Subtract the adjusted opening value from the adjusted closing value.
- Convert the change to a percentage. Divide the adjusted change by the adjusted opening value.
- Apply the percentage to the contribution. Multiply that percentage by the contribution amount being returned. The result is NIA.
- Calculate the correction distribution. Add the NIA to the contribution amount being returned.
Keep the intermediate values rather than rounding after each step. Ask the custodian how it handles cents and final rounding, and use its reported amount for the actual distribution.
Follow the IRS example step by step
IRS Publication 590-A (2025), Worksheet 1-4, gives this example: a $400 contribution is to be returned, the adjusted opening balance is $6,400, and the adjusted closing balance is $7,600. The example assumes no other contributions or distributions during the stated period.
- Find the change in adjusted value: $7,600 − $6,400 = $1,200.
- Calculate the adjusted percentage change: $1,200 ÷ $6,400 = 0.1875.
- Apply that percentage to the contribution being returned: $400 × 0.1875 = $75 NIA.
- Add the NIA to the contribution return: $400 + $75 = $475 total distribution.
The worksheet labels line 6: “This is the net income attributable to the contribution to be returned.” In this example, the account’s adjusted value rose, so NIA is positive. The $75 is specific to the example’s values and assumptions; it does not establish what another taxpayer’s contribution earned. IRS Publication 590-A (2025), Worksheet 1-4
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUnderstand positive and negative NIA
NIA can be positive or negative. A positive result means the formula attributes earnings to the contribution; a negative result means it attributes a loss. If the adjusted closing value is greater than the adjusted opening value, the percentage change is positive. If it is lower, the percentage change and NIA are negative. If the adjusted values are equal, NIA is zero.
The principal and NIA are separate components even though the correction distribution combines them. With positive NIA, the amount distributed is greater than the contribution being returned. With negative NIA, the distribution is less than the contribution amount because the attributed loss reduces the total. Do not replace a negative result with zero or assume that the account must have earned money.
Ask the custodian how it will display a negative NIA in its correction paperwork and tax reporting. The account’s overall investment performance and the NIA assigned to one contribution are not interchangeable figures.

Why a simple balance subtraction can be wrong
A tempting shortcut is to take the account balance today, subtract the excess contribution, and call the difference earnings. That approach ignores the worksheet’s valuation dates and transaction adjustments. It can be wrong when the account received another contribution, a transfer, or a recharacterization after the excess contribution. It can also be wrong when money left the account through a distribution or transfer before the correction.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For example, a later contribution increases the account but should be reflected on the opening side of the worksheet rather than treated as investment growth attributable to the excess. A distribution reduces the closing balance but is added on the closing side under the worksheet method so that the account’s change is measured consistently. The custodian’s transaction ledger is therefore as important as the two fair market values.
When there are several contributions or transactions
If more than one contribution is in question, do not assume one calculation covers all of them. Tell the custodian which contribution or contributions are excess and the amount to be returned for each. The relevant period and transaction list may differ depending on when each contribution entered the IRA and when it is removed.
Transfers and recharacterizations deserve particular attention because they appear in the worksheet’s adjustments. Confirm whether an item was a transfer, distribution, or recharacterization in the custodian’s records and which date it uses. If money moved between accounts, retain confirmation from both sides so the calculation can be reconciled.
When an account had substantial activity, request an itemized explanation showing the opening value, each adjustment, the closing value, the percentage change, NIA, and total distribution. An unexplained single number is difficult to audit and may conceal a missing transaction.
Choose how to calculate and process the correction
| Approach | Who calculates NIA | What to check | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ask the IRA custodian to calculate and process the return | The trustee or custodian determines NIA in most cases, according to the IRS. | Confirm the valuation dates, transaction adjustments, amount being returned, processing timeline, and distribution reporting. | The practical first step for most account holders, particularly when the IRA had other activity during the period. |
| Use IRS Worksheet 1-4 as a check | You can follow the worksheet’s formal calculation structure; the IRS says the custodian determines NIA in most cases. | Make sure you have the correct fair market values and included the specified contributions, transfers, distributions, and recharacterizations. | Reviewing or checking the amount, especially after the custodian explains its calculation. |
| Ask a tax professional to review the correction | The professional can review the custodian’s figures and the federal filing treatment; the custodian still controls the account transaction. | Provide the contribution year, dates, amounts, age, filing status, extension facts, transaction history, and tax forms. | When the deadline, early-distribution rules, multiple transactions, or reporting is unclear. |
These approaches are not competing formulas. The worksheet supplies the calculation structure, while the custodian usually has the account values and transaction data needed to apply it. A professional review can address the tax return, but it should not substitute for confirming the custodian’s operational instructions.
Contact the custodian with a precise request
When you contact the custodian, say that you need a return of an excess IRA contribution. Identify the contribution amount, contribution date, tax year, IRA type, and the amount you believe should be returned. Ask which form or online process it requires and whether the distribution must be sent to you or can be directed elsewhere under its correction process.
Request answers to these questions:
- What fair market value will you use immediately before the contribution?
- What fair market value will you use immediately before removal?
- Which other contributions, transfers, distributions, and recharacterizations are included?
- What amount of NIA did you calculate, and is it positive or negative?
- What is the total correction distribution?
- When will the transaction be processed, and what date will appear on the account record?
- What tax documents or distribution codes will you issue?
Ask for the answer in writing, through a secure message, letter, confirmation screen, or downloadable transaction record. Save the request and the response. If the provider’s number differs from your worksheet check, ask it to identify the differing valuation date or transaction adjustment rather than changing numbers until they match.
Complete the correction within the applicable deadline
Timing depends on the tax year and your filing circumstances. The 2025 Instructions for Form 5329 describe withdrawing a current-year excess contribution and its earnings by the tax return due date, including extensions. They also describe a limited correction window after filing for a timely filed return, with an amended return and a specified notation. The instructions do not make every taxpayer’s deadline identical: check the instructions for the relevant tax year and confirm how your filing date, extension, and correction facts apply. - Pin down the contribution tax year. A correction request should identify the year associated with the excess, not just the date you contact the custodian.
- Check your filing and extension facts. Find the return due date that applies to you and whether you filed on time or obtained an extension.
- Ask the custodian how long processing takes. Request the return early enough to address the applicable deadline, and ask what date it uses to treat the distribution as processed.
- Check the tax-year instructions before relying on a post-filing correction. The limited window and filing steps described for one tax year should not be assumed to apply unchanged to another.
Do not wait until the last day to start. A request can require identity verification, paperwork, a signature, asset liquidation, or internal review. Those operational steps are provider-specific, so obtain the custodian’s timeline and keep proof of when you submitted the request. If the provider cannot complete the request by the date you expected, ask what federal correction option applies to your facts instead of assuming the request date alone resolves the tax issue.

A correction distribution does not have one universal tax result. IRS Form 5329 instructions say earnings are included in gross income under the applicable rules. For someone under age 59½, the earnings may also need to be reported as an early distribution unless an exception applies. Separately, Form 5329 calculates the additional tax on excess contributions that remain. Which entries and tax consequences apply depend on the taxpayer’s facts and the year involved. IRS Instructions for Form 5329 (2025)
The tax treatment is tied to the earnings portion and the applicable correction rules, not simply to the fact that money left an IRA. Do not assume that every returned contribution is taxable in the same way, that every taxpayer under 59½ owes the additional tax, or that removing the principal automatically removes all reporting requirements. Read the instructions for the specific year and consider whether an exception applies to an early-distribution rule.
Keep the custodian’s calculation, transaction confirmation, and distribution tax documents with your records. When preparing the return, use the instructions for that tax year to determine whether Form 5329 or other reporting is required and how the correction and any earnings should be treated. The IRS also provides IRA guidance and additional resources here: Individual retirement arrangements — Additional resources.
Records to keep
Create a correction file containing the original contribution confirmation, the account statement showing the value before the contribution, the transaction history for the period, the statement or valuation used immediately before removal, the custodian’s NIA worksheet or explanation, and the final distribution confirmation. Add copies of any amended return, Form 5329 workpapers, and tax forms received for the distribution.
Label each document with the contribution year and account identifier. This prevents confusion when the same IRA has contributions for more than one year or when a custodian issues several distribution confirmations. Keep records long enough to support the federal return on which the correction is reported, following your tax professional’s retention advice.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using today’s balance. The worksheet calls for fair market values immediately before the contribution and immediately before removal, not an arbitrary current balance.
- Ignoring transaction adjustments. Other contributions, transfers, recharacterizations, and distributions can change the adjusted values.
- Applying the account’s full gain to the excess. NIA applies the adjusted percentage change to the contribution being returned, not the entire IRA balance.
- Assuming NIA is always positive. A decline can produce a negative NIA and a total distribution below the contribution amount.
- Treating the IRS example as a forecast. The $400, $75, and $475 figures belong only to the published example.
- Waiting past the relevant date. The applicable deadline depends on the tax year, return due date, extension, and filing facts.
- Guessing the tax form treatment. Earnings, early-distribution rules, and the additional tax on excess contributions require the applicable Form 5329 instructions.
- Failing to reconcile a discrepancy. If your check differs from the custodian’s result, compare valuation dates and every listed transaction before accepting or disputing the amount.
A practical review checklist
- Confirm which contribution is excess and the tax year involved.
- Confirm the amount to be returned.
- Obtain both required fair market values.
- List all contributions, transfers, distributions, and recharacterizations in the relevant period.
- Recreate the adjusted opening and closing values.
- Compute the percentage change and NIA without premature rounding.
- Compare your check with the custodian’s calculation.
- Submit the correction early enough for the applicable deadline.
- Obtain written confirmation of the total distribution and its tax reporting.
- Use the relevant year’s Form 5329 instructions when preparing the return.
Use the applicable IRS publication and instructions
The calculation above follows Worksheet 1-4 in Publication 590-A (2025), while deadlines and tax reporting require the instructions that apply to the relevant tax year. IRS publications and form instructions can change, so use the revision for the year you are correcting rather than carrying forward a prior-year deadline or filing step. The IRS page describing Publication 590-A is available at About Publication 590-A.
This guidance covers U.S. federal rules. State tax treatment is not established here. An individualized answer can depend on the contribution date and amount, IRA valuations, transactions while the contribution remained in the account, filing and extension facts, age, and distribution reporting. If the calculation or tax treatment is unclear, ask the custodian or a qualified tax professional to review those details.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the formula for earnings on an excess IRA contribution?
NIA equals the contribution being returned multiplied by ((adjusted closing value minus adjusted opening value) divided by adjusted opening value). The total correction distribution is the contribution returned plus NIA.

Who usually calculates the NIA?
The IRS says the IRA trustee or custodian determines NIA in most cases. Ask the provider to process the return and provide its valuation dates, transaction adjustments, and calculation.
Can NIA be negative?
Yes. If the adjusted closing value is lower than the adjusted opening value, the formula produces a negative NIA, reflecting an attributed loss. The total distribution can therefore be less than the contribution being returned.
Can I use my current IRA balance?
Not by itself. Worksheet 1-4 uses fair market values immediately before the contribution and immediately before removal, adjusted for specified contributions, transfers, distributions, and recharacterizations.

When must I remove a current-year excess contribution?
The 2025 Form 5329 instructions describe withdrawing the excess and its earnings by the return due date, including extensions, and a limited post-filing correction process for a timely filed return. Check the instructions for the applicable tax year and your filing facts.
Are the earnings taxable?
The applicable Form 5329 instructions state that earnings are included in gross income under the relevant rules. For someone under 59½, earnings may also be an early distribution unless an exception applies.
Does Form 5329 always apply?
Not every correction has the same reporting result. Form 5329 also addresses the additional tax on excess contributions that remain. Use the instructions for the year and facts involved to determine the required entries.
What should I save after the correction?
Keep the original contribution record, both valuation records, the transaction history, the custodian’s NIA calculation, distribution confirmation, tax forms, and any Form 5329 or amended-return workpapers.
The Bottom Line
Use IRS Publication 590-A Worksheet 1-4: calculate adjusted opening and closing values, apply the percentage change to the contribution being returned, and add the resulting NIA to that contribution. Have the custodian perform and document the calculation, complete the correction by the applicable tax-year deadline, and follow the relevant Form 5329 instructions for reporting.
