For example, ₹10,00,000 at an illustrative 7.00% annual rate works out to about ₹5,833 a month before tax. The bank’s actual monthly payout can differ because some banks apply a discounted rate for monthly payments, and tax withholding may reduce the credit.

This is an arithmetic illustration, not a bank quote or a guaranteed credit amount. The 7.00% rate is illustrative; replace it with the rate the bank has contracted for the deposit’s amount, tenure, customer category and product.
The calculation has three inputs: the principal, the annual rate expressed as a percentage, and the number of months in a year. Divide the percentage by 100 to convert it to a decimal, then divide the annual interest estimate by 12. For example, at 7.00%, the decimal rate is 0.07. The shortcut is useful for planning and comparing approximate gross income, but it does not by itself reproduce every bank’s payout calculation.
It is also a proportional estimate: if the principal doubles while the rate and other terms stay the same, the estimate doubles. At a fixed principal, a higher annual rate increases the estimate. For ₹10 lakh, each one-percentage-point change in the annual rate changes the simple monthly estimate by about ₹833, before tax. This is arithmetic based on the formula, not a prediction that a bank will offer a particular rate.

Find the rate that actually applies to the deposit
Do not assume that every senior citizen receives the same rate. Check the bank’s current rate table and booking terms for the exact tenure and deposit-size band, and confirm whether the senior-citizen premium applies to the chosen product and residency category.
For example, ICICI Bank’s rate page states that its published rates were effective 8 October 2026 and presents tenure-based general and senior-citizen rates for domestic fixed deposits. Rates can change, so use the schedule in force when the FD is booked rather than relying on an older example: ICICI Bank fixed-deposit rates.
Before using a rate in the formula, make sure it matches the deposit you are considering. A rate shown for a different tenure, deposit-size band or customer category may not apply. Confirm whether the displayed senior-citizen rate is for domestic deposits and whether the depositor’s residency and the selected scheme meet its stated conditions. The bank’s booking terms matter alongside the rate table because the relevant figure is the rate contracted for that specific FD.
Write down the rate as an annual percentage exactly as shown by the bank. If the rate is 7.00%, enter 7 in the percentage version of the formula, or 0.07 if using the decimal version. Do not divide by 100 twice. If comparing two banks, calculate each estimate using that bank’s own rate and terms rather than applying one rate to both deposits.

Calculate the expected payout step by step
- Write down the principal. Use the amount actually being placed in the FD. If you are comparing different deposit amounts, calculate each one separately.
- Confirm the applicable annual rate. Check the bank’s current rate for the exact tenure, deposit amount, senior-citizen eligibility and product or residency category. Keep the date of the rate schedule in mind, since published rates can change.
- Calculate the rough gross monthly amount. Multiply the principal by the annual rate, divide by 100, then divide by 12. Keep the result labelled as an estimate before tax.
- Select monthly payout and check the bank’s calculation. Ask the bank or use its payout calculator with the monthly option selected. Confirm whether the displayed figure is gross or after withholding and whether the monthly payout rate is discounted.
- Assess tax separately. A monthly estimate is not necessarily the amount to treat as spendable net income. Consider any withholding and the depositor’s overall tax position.
For a practical check, keep the calculation and the bank’s payout result side by side. The simple formula answers, “What is a rough monthly share of the annual interest at this rate?” The bank calculator or booking confirmation answers the more specific question, “What monthly amount does this product expect to pay under its own method?” If the two differ, do not assume one is necessarily an error: check whether the bank applies a payout adjustment and whether either figure is before TDS.
Why the bank’s monthly credit may differ
Dividing the annual rate by 12 is a convenient estimate, but it may not reproduce the bank’s payout calculation. Bandhan Bank, for example, publishes a completed-month method using I = P × (1 + (R_D/12)) − P, with the discounted rate R_D derived from the contracted annual rate and monthly compounding terms. Its page says the formula excludes TDS. This is a bank-specific method, not a universal formula for Indian fixed deposits: Bandhan Bank interest rates.
The important practical point is not to substitute a bank-specific formula for every FD. Bandhan’s published expression identifies a discounted rate, but the bank’s own definitions and terms are needed to calculate its exact payout. If you do not have those details, use the simple calculation only as an approximation and request the actual monthly payout figure from the bank. Do not assume that the annual rate divided by 12 is the precise monthly credit.
ICICI Bank also offers monthly payout as an option and says its calculator does not include TDS. Treat the calculator output as a payout estimate before withholding unless the bank explicitly identifies it as a net figure. A calculator result may therefore be useful for estimating gross income without answering how much will arrive after any applicable deduction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen checking a difference, verify three things: that you selected monthly payout rather than another payout option; that the calculator used the contracted rate and correct tenure; and that the result is identified as gross or net of withholding. Ask the bank how it calculates monthly interest if the displayed amount is not explained. The cited bank pages do not establish one universal adjustment or formula across banks, so there is no single correction to apply to the simple estimate for every FD.
Compare payout terms, not just the headline rate
Before choosing between deposits, compare the terms that determine both income and access to the money. A headline annual rate alone cannot tell you the exact monthly credit, the applicable withdrawal conditions, or whether the stated senior-citizen rate is available for the product you want.
- Rate: The senior-citizen annual rate for the exact tenure and deposit-size band, using the current schedule.
- Payout method: Whether monthly payout is available and whether the bank discounts the rate for that frequency. Check the expected monthly figure, not only the annual rate.
- Tax treatment: The gross payout, any TDS, and the depositor’s separate tax position. A gross calculator result is not necessarily the cash amount credited.
- Access to funds: Callable or non-callable status, premature-closure conditions and penalties. A rate comparison should not ignore the terms for accessing the principal before maturity.
- Eligibility: Whether the senior-citizen rate applies to the selected scheme and to the depositor’s resident or non-resident status.
These details are institution- and product-specific. Central Bank of India’s cited page, for instance, lists tenure-specific rates, a senior-citizen premium for specified time-deposit schemes, and withdrawal conditions. It lists a 1% premature-withdrawal penalty and restrictions for non-callable deposits on that page; check the terms for the particular scheme rather than assuming they apply to every FD: Central Bank of India interest rates.

For a like-for-like comparison, use the same principal and intended tenure when looking at the offers, then record each bank’s applicable senior-citizen rate and monthly payout estimate. Separately note the product’s callable status and the premature-closure rule. This prevents a simple gross-income comparison from obscuring differences in access or eligibility. The Central Bank of India example is evidence that such restrictions and penalties can appear in specific product terms; it is not a general rule for all banks or all deposits.
Understand the difference between gross income and net cash received
The formula estimates gross interest. A bank may deduct tax at source (TDS) when applicable, so the amount credited can be lower. TDS is withholding; it is not automatically the depositor’s final tax bill. The final tax position depends on the individual’s circumstances.
The Income Tax Department’s TDS table, reflecting the Income-tax Act, 1961 as amended by the Finance Act 2026, lists a 10% rate for Section 194A interest other than interest on securities for resident individuals for AY 2026–27: Income Tax Department TDS rates. This is a withholding rate, not a statement that every depositor ultimately owes tax at 10%.
ICICI Bank’s page says TDS is deducted when annual FD interest exceeds ₹1,00,000 for resident senior citizens, and that FD interest is taxable according to the depositor’s income bracket. Thresholds, rules and eligibility can change; verify current government rules and the bank’s treatment before relying on a threshold or estimating net income.
Keep three amounts conceptually separate: the gross interest estimate from the formula, any TDS withheld by the bank, and the depositor’s overall tax liability. A TDS figure describes withholding at source; it does not by itself establish the final tax due. Likewise, a monthly estimate is not a complete tax calculation. Because the cited table is for AY 2026–27 and bank pages and tax rules are date-sensitive, check the current rule and the depositor’s eligibility rather than carrying a threshold or rate forward without verification.

₹10,00,000 × 0.07 ÷ 12 = about ₹5,833 gross per month.
The actual credit may be different if the bank applies a discounted monthly payout method or deducts TDS. The example rate is not a claim about the rate available from any bank, for any tenure or deposit amount, or on any date.
The same arithmetic can help you check the scale of an estimate at that illustrative rate: ₹5,00,000 would produce about ₹2,917 a month before tax, while ₹20,00,000 would produce about ₹11,667 a month before tax. These are calculations using the same hypothetical 7.00% rate, not bank offers or guaranteed credits. The actual monthly amount remains dependent on the contracted rate, selected payout terms and any applicable withholding.
For another useful cross-check, calculate the annual simple interest first: ₹10,00,000 × 0.07 = ₹70,000. Dividing ₹70,000 by 12 gives approximately ₹5,833 per month. This is the same estimate as multiplying by 0.07 and dividing by 12 directly; it does not add a separate payout adjustment or tax calculation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common calculation mistakes to avoid
- Using an illustrative or old rate as if it were contracted. The 7.00% example is for arithmetic only. Use the bank’s current rate for the specific amount, tenure, product and customer category.
- Confusing a monthly estimate with a promised credit. The simple formula is approximate. Some banks use a discounted monthly payout method, so check the bank’s own calculator or booking terms.
- Mixing up percentage and decimal notation. Use either principal × 7 ÷ 100 ÷ 12 or principal × 0.07 ÷ 12 for a 7.00% example, not both conversions together.
- Calling a gross figure take-home income. The estimate is before tax. TDS may affect the credit, and withholding is not necessarily the final tax liability.
- Comparing products with different access conditions as if they were identical. Check callable status and premature-withdrawal terms, including any scheme-specific penalty or restriction.
- Applying one bank’s terms to another bank. Published methods, rates and product conditions are institution-specific. Confirm the details for the FD being considered.
Sources and date-sensitive details
Bank rates, payout methods, withdrawal rules and tax thresholds are not interchangeable across institutions or products. Use the rate and terms attached to the specific FD, and confirm the current tax treatment with the bank, the Income Tax Department or a qualified tax professional.
The cited examples illustrate why verification matters: ICICI’s rate page gives a dated schedule and states that its calculator excludes TDS; Bandhan publishes a particular completed-month formula and says its formulas exclude TDS; Central Bank of India lists scheme-specific withdrawal conditions; and the Income Tax Department’s table identifies its amendment basis and assessment-year withholding rate. None of these examples should be treated as a universal rate, formula, threshold or withdrawal rule for every senior-citizen fixed deposit.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate monthly interest on a senior citizen fixed deposit?
For a quick gross estimate, multiply the principal by the annual rate and divide by 100 and then by 12. For example, ₹10,00,000 at an illustrative 7.00% rate gives about ₹5,833 a month before tax. Check the bank’s monthly payout calculation for the expected actual credit.

Is dividing the annual FD interest by 12 the exact monthly payout?
Not necessarily. It is a useful approximation, but some banks use a discounted rate for monthly payouts. Check the bank’s calculator or ask for the payout method and expected amount for the specific deposit.
Does the monthly interest estimate include TDS?
No. The formula estimates gross interest before tax. A bank may deduct TDS when applicable, and TDS is withholding rather than automatically the depositor’s final tax bill. Confirm whether a bank calculator shows a gross or net figure.
What rate should I use in the calculation?
Use the current contracted annual rate for the exact deposit amount, tenure, senior-citizen category, product and residency status. Do not treat an illustrative rate or an older rate table as a current bank offer.

Not necessarily. Confirm that the senior-citizen premium applies to the selected product and the depositor’s resident or non-resident status. Rate schedules can also vary by tenure and deposit-size band.
What should I compare besides the monthly interest amount?
Compare the applicable senior-citizen rate, monthly payout availability and calculation method, gross versus post-withholding amounts, callable or non-callable status, premature-closure rules and penalties, and product eligibility.
Is TDS the final tax I owe on FD interest?
No. TDS is tax withheld at source and is not automatically the depositor’s final tax liability. The final position depends on the individual’s circumstances; verify current rules and seek qualified tax advice if needed.
The Bottom Line
Use principal × annual rate ÷ 100 ÷ 12 for a quick estimate of gross monthly interest, then verify the contracted senior-citizen rate, the bank’s monthly payout method, withdrawal terms and any applicable TDS. Treat the result as an estimate until the bank confirms the expected credit for the specific FD.
