How to Calculate GST and the Final Price After a Rate Change

Calculate GST from a pre-tax or tax-inclusive price, compare totals after a rate change, and identify the jurisdiction, supply and date that determine the correct rate.

To calculate GST on a pre-tax price, multiply the price by the applicable rate and add that tax to the price. If the amount already includes GST, divide by 1 plus the rate to recover the pre-tax price; the GST portion is the total multiplied by the rate divided by 1 plus the rate. A rate change affects the total only if the seller changes the price charged or the applicable tax treatment requires it. The correct rate and effective date depend on the jurisdiction, location and type of supply.

Calculate GST on a pre-tax price

Let P be the price before tax and r the applicable GST rate written as a decimal. For example, 14% is 0.14.

  • GST amount: P × r
  • Price including GST: P × (1 + r)

For example, if a taxable item costs 100 before tax and the applicable rate is 14%, the GST is 100 × 0.14 = 14, and the total is 100 × 1.14 = 114. This illustrates the arithmetic only; it does not establish that 14% applies to your purchase.

Find the GST included in a total

If the displayed total T already includes GST, do not multiply the total by the headline rate. Instead, divide by 1 plus the rate to recover the pre-tax amount, then subtract that amount from the total.

  • Pre-tax price: T ÷ (1 + r)
  • GST included: T × r ÷ (1 + r), or T − [T ÷ (1 + r)]

For example, at a hypothetical 14% rate, a tax-inclusive total of 114 contains 14 in GST: 114 × 0.14 ÷ 1.14 = 14. The tax fraction is r/(1+r), rather than r of the total. The Guyana Revenue Authority illustrates this at 14% as 7/57. See its VAT calculation guidance.

Compare the final price before and after a rate change

To isolate the mathematical effect of a rate change, keep the same pre-tax base price and calculate each total using its respective rate:

  • Old total: P × (1 + rold)
  • New total: P × (1 + rnew)
  • Difference due to the rate alone: P × (rnew − rold)

Suppose the pre-tax price is 100 and the rate rises from 10% to 12%. The old total is 110, the new total is 112, and the rate-only difference is 2. This comparison is a calculation method, not a rule requiring a seller to change a customer-facing price. The formula follows the same inclusive-price arithmetic used in HM Revenue & Customs’ examples. Read the HMRC VAT calculation guidance.

If the seller changes the underlying pre-tax price as well as the rate, the total difference reflects both changes. Compare the base prices separately before attributing a change to tax. If a displayed tax-inclusive price is held fixed, its tax and pre-tax components change as the rate changes, but the total itself stays fixed. Whether an advertised or agreed price can or must change is a matter of local law and contract terms, not something the arithmetic settles.

Use the rate and date that actually apply

There is no universal GST rate or effective-date rule. Before calculating a real transaction, establish the relevant jurisdiction and place of supply, the product or service’s tax status, and the date and transition rules that apply. A jurisdiction may have multiple rates or tax categories.

  • United Kingdom: HMRC’s guidance shows examples using the 20% standard and 5% reduced VAT rates, and says rate changes must be applied from the date they change. These are UK VAT examples, not general GST rates. See HMRC guidance on VAT rate changes.
  • Canada: The Canada Revenue Agency says the rate depends on the place and type of supply. Its current rate table lists Nova Scotia HST at 14% from April 1, 2025. It also says to calculate GST on the price without PST where PST applies. Check the CRA’s GST/HST rates and place-of-supply guidance.
  • South Africa: SARS describes VAT at 15.5% for supplies from May 1, 2025. For an inclusive amount, it gives the fraction 15.5/115.5; for an exclusive price, add VAT at 15.5%. Its transition guidance says goods supplied or made available for collection on or after May 1 may use the new rate, while services use the rate on the date they are performed or rendered. This is a South African example; check the FAQ for the rules relevant to a particular transaction. Read the SARS rate-change FAQ.

Round the result and verify it

Keep full precision during intermediate calculations, then round the payable amount as required by local rules or the invoicing system. The Canada Revenue Agency’s online calculator accepts either a pre-tax amount or a total after taxes, and warns that rounding may make its estimate differ from the final total by a cent or two. Use the CRA’s GST/HST calculator and read its rounding note. The sources cited here do not establish one rounding convention for every jurisdiction, so consult the relevant tax authority’s invoicing guidance when an exact amount is needed.
