To calculate a Pakistan-listed share’s historical dividend yield, add the cash dividends per share paid during the trailing 12 months, divide that total by the share price you are using, and multiply by 100. A share that paid Rs 12 per share and trades at Rs 240 has a trailing yield of 5%: (12 ÷ 240) × 100. The percentage is useful only when you compare identical periods and price dates, then test the payout against earnings, valuation, liquidity, sector conditions, taxes and your own objective.

This guide shows how to calculate the figure, use the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) screener, distinguish historical yield from a forward estimate and compare shares without treating a high percentage as an automatic buy signal.

What dividend yield measures

Dividend yield expresses cash income relative to the market price of one share. PSX describes the concept as the cash value of a dividend compared with the share price. The standard historical measure is:

The result is a rate, not a promise. It tells you what the recent cash distributions represent at the selected price. It does not guarantee that the company will repeat those distributions, and it does not include any future price gain or loss.

For Pakistan stocks, use the cash amount per share actually paid. A company can distribute dividends more than once in a year, so one interim or final payment is not automatically an annual dividend. The PSX investor guide explains the underlying stock concepts at PSX’s Guide to Investors.

How to calculate a trailing 12-month yield

1. Choose the share and price date

Write down the company, the exchange-listed share class and the date of the price you will use. Prices move throughout the trading day, so “yield” without a price date is incomplete. If you are comparing several companies, use the same date and a consistent price convention for all of them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Gather cash dividends paid in the period

Look at the 12-month window ending on your chosen calculation date and list every cash dividend per share whose payment date falls inside that window. Add the amounts. Do not count a proposed dividend merely because it was announced, and do not count a distribution outside the selected period.

For example, if the payment record shows Rs 4 per share in an interim payment and Rs 8 per share in a final payment during the window, the trailing cash total is Rs 12 per share.

3. Divide by the share price

Divide the Rs 12 total by the selected market price. At Rs 240, the calculation is 12 ÷ 240 = 0.05.

4. Convert to a percentage and label it

Multiply by 100: 0.05 × 100 = 5%. Label the number “trailing 12-month dividend yield” and record both the price date and the dividend period. That label prevents readers from mistaking a historical result for a forecast.

Worked arithmetic example

Input Value
Cash dividends paid per share in trailing 12 months Rs 12
Share price used Rs 240
Calculation (Rs 12 ÷ Rs 240) × 100
Trailing yield 5%

This is a mathematical illustration, not a reported yield for a particular Pakistan company.

Trailing yield versus forward yield

A trailing yield uses payments that have already occurred. It is reproducible: another reader can check the same payment dates and price date. PSX’s Dividend 20 methodology also uses trailing 12-month dividend yield when ranking eligible companies; details are set out in the PSX Dividend 20 Index brochure.

A forward yield estimates what a company may pay over a future period. You might calculate it from a formally announced upcoming dividend or from an assumption that the latest annual payout will continue:

Forward yield estimate (%) = (assumed future cash dividends per share ÷ current share price) × 100

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single universal forward-yield convention established in the PSX material covered here. State the assumption, identify whether the amount is announced or merely projected and call the result an “estimate.” A forward figure can be wrong if earnings, board decisions, regulation or capital needs change the payout.

Use the PSX screener without losing the date context

The PSX Data Portal stock screener provides a dividend-yield filter and displays yield alongside price, market capitalisation, price-to-earnings ratio (P/E), free float and average 30-day volume. The values are live or periodically updated market data, not permanent facts.

  1. Open the screener and set a dividend-yield range that fits your initial search.
  2. Note the displayed price and the date and time of your observation.
  3. Export or record the company symbol, yield, P/E, market capitalisation, free float and average 30-day volume.
  4. Check the company’s published financial statements and dividend announcements to understand the cash payments behind the displayed percentage.
  5. When you publish or save your comparison, include the screener observation date. A later reader may see a different price and therefore a different yield.

Use the screener as a shortlist, not as a complete investment decision. PSX’s investor education material also points investors toward company fundamentals, annual payouts, sector performance and market activity; it is available through the PSX Financial Literacy Initiative.

How to compare Pakistan stocks fairly

Yield comparisons become misleading when one company is measured on a different dividend period, a different price date or a different treatment of special distributions. Build a worksheet in which every row follows the same definitions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison axis What to record Why it matters
Trailing yield Cash dividends per share paid in the same trailing 12-month window, divided by each share’s price on the same date Creates a like-for-like historical income comparison
Dividend history Payment dates, amounts and whether distributions were regular, interrupted or unusually large Shows whether the recent yield reflects a repeatable pattern or a one-off payment
Payout and earnings Profit, earnings per share (EPS) and the proportion of earnings distributed Tests whether cash distributions have an earnings base
Valuation P/E alongside yield Prevents a high yield from being viewed without the price investors are paying for earnings
Price context Current price, recent movement and the price date used for the calculation A falling denominator can make yield rise even when the cash dividend does not
Market size and tradability Market capitalisation, free float and average 30-day volume Indicates how easily a position may be entered or exited and how broad the investable share supply is
Sector and market conditions Sector performance, business cycle exposure and relevant market activity Companies in different sectors can have different earnings and distribution risks
Investor objective Need for current income, capital growth or both; risk tolerance and diversification The highest yield may not fit a growth objective, liquidity need or acceptable risk level

Dividend history and payout quality

Start with the payment record, not just the percentage. A company that paid a modest amount every year may serve an income plan differently from one whose trailing total includes a single exceptional distribution. Identify the payment dates and distinguish ordinary payments from any unusual or explicitly special distribution disclosed by the company.

PSXDIV20 uses screening criteria that include recent cash dividend payments and a minimum payout ratio in multiple financial years, together with listing-history, trading-activity and free-float requirements. Those rules describe eligibility for an index screen; inclusion is not a forecast that a constituent will maintain its dividend.

Earnings, EPS and P/E

Yield should be read with earnings. PSX identifies EPS and P/E as basic stock concepts. Compare each company’s recent EPS and profitability with the cash it distributes. A payout that repeatedly exceeds sustainable earnings can be vulnerable, while a lower payout may leave the company more room to fund operations or growth.

P/E adds a valuation perspective. Two shares can show the same yield but command very different prices relative to earnings. Conversely, a high yield paired with a very low P/E may reflect a market concern rather than a bargain. The ratio cannot explain that concern by itself, so read the financial statements and company disclosures.

Price denominator and yield traps

Because price is in the denominator, a falling share price raises the calculated yield even if the dividend is unchanged. A 10% yield can therefore be a warning that the market expects weaker earnings, a dividend cut or other risk. Investigate the price movement and the company’s latest results before interpreting the percentage as attractive income.

Liquidity and tradability

Market capitalisation does not tell you how much stock is readily available for trading. Check free float and average 30-day volume in the PSX screener. Thin trading can increase the gap between quoted and executable prices and make a position harder to exit at the price used in your yield calculation. PSXDIV20’s technical screens also consider trading activity and free-float criteria, which can help you understand the scope of that index comparison.

Sector, objective and diversification

Compare companies within a relevant sector when possible, then consider how sector exposure affects your overall portfolio. PSX investor guidance recommends defining whether you seek dividends, capital gains or both, assessing risk tolerance and diversifying. A retiree seeking dependable cash flow may prioritise payment stability and liquidity; an investor focused on total return may accept a lower yield for reinvestment and growth. Neither preference makes a single yield number universally best.

A practical comparison workflow

  1. Set a common snapshot. Choose one price date and one trailing 12-month period for every company.
  2. Collect primary data. Record each share’s price, cash payments per share, payment dates, EPS, P/E, market capitalisation, free float and average 30-day volume.
  3. Calculate independently. Add the cash payments in the period and apply the formula rather than copying an unlabeled percentage.
  4. Reconcile differences. If your result differs from the screener, check whether the portal uses a different update time, price convention or dividend-period cutoff.
  5. Read the payout record. Mark regular, missed and unusually large payments and investigate the company announcement for each material change.
  6. Test earnings support. Compare the cash total with EPS and reported profitability; note whether the payout ratio has been stable across multiple years.
  7. Check marketability. Review free float and average 30-day volume before assuming the quoted price is readily available for your order size.
  8. Assess portfolio fit. Decide whether the share advances your income, growth or total-return objective without creating excessive sector or company concentration.
  9. Write the date on the result. Save the price date, dividend window and source links so the comparison can be updated rather than mistaken for a timeless ranking.

Taxes, brokerage and net cash income

The formula produces a gross yield. Taxes and brokerage commissions reduce an investor’s realised return. PSX notes that taxes and brokerage commissions affect returns and that commission levels vary by brokerage firm.

For withholding-tax assumptions, consult the current Federal Board of Revenue withholding-tax rate cards and apply the rules that match your investor status and transaction. The FBR page reviewed for this guide identifies a Tax Year 2027 rate card updated through 30 June 2026 under Finance Act 2026, but the dividend-specific row was not exposed on the landing page. Do not reuse an older dividend rate as though it were current; verify the applicable row in the authoritative card.

A simple net-income worksheet can be expressed as:

Estimated net cash per share = gross cash dividend per share − applicable withholding tax − per-share transaction costs

Use the actual tax treatment and fee schedule for your circumstances. If you are comparing shares, apply the same assumptions to each one and disclose them. A gross 5% yield and a net 5% cash return are not the same claim.

Fix: Check free float and average 30-day volume and consider how trading costs could affect the realised return.

Using an old tax rate

Problem: You subtract a familiar withholding percentage without confirming the current tax year.

Fix: Check the current FBR rate card and your investor-specific treatment before calculating net income.

When an index screen helps—and when it does not

The Dividend 20 methodology is useful for understanding how a formal PSX screen combines dividend yield with eligibility and quality-related filters. It considers recent cash dividends, payout-ratio history, listing history, trading activity and free float, and ranks eligible companies using trailing 12-month yield. That makes it a structured starting universe for comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not a substitute for due diligence. An index rule cannot know your tax position, cash-flow requirement, concentration limits or tolerance for a sector downturn. Nor does index inclusion promise the next dividend. Use the methodology to understand what has been screened, then examine the current company information and your own portfolio constraints.

How to present a defensible yield comparison

A clear article, spreadsheet or investment note should show the inputs rather than only a ranking. For each company, include:

  • Company name and ticker.
  • Price and exact observation date.
  • Each cash dividend per share and payment date in the trailing window.
  • Total trailing cash dividend per share.
  • Formula and resulting trailing yield.
  • Whether any forward estimate is based on an announced amount or an explicit assumption.
  • EPS, P/E, market capitalisation, free float and average 30-day volume from the same data snapshot where available.
  • A short note on payment consistency, unusual distributions and material price movement.
  • Gross-versus-net treatment, including the tax year and brokerage assumptions used.

This format lets a reader reproduce the arithmetic, see where the comparison is time-sensitive and decide whether the income profile fits a diversified portfolio.

Final decision checklist

  • Is the cash total made only from dividends paid inside the same trailing 12-month period?
  • Is the share price dated and consistent across all companies?
  • Is the result explicitly labeled trailing or forward estimate?
  • Have you checked payment consistency and the company’s earnings support?
  • Have you considered P/E, sector conditions, price movement, free float and trading volume?
  • Does the share fit your income, growth or combined objective and risk tolerance?
  • Have you verified current taxes and brokerage costs before estimating net cash?
  • Have you checked current company announcements and financial statements rather than relying on a past yield?

A yield calculation is therefore the beginning of a Pakistan-stock comparison, not its conclusion. The arithmetic is simple; matching dates, validating the payout and judging whether the income is sustainable are what make the comparison useful.
