How to Calculate Credit Card Balance Transfer Savings in Excel

Compare a current card payoff with a balance transfer in Excel by modeling fees, promotional and regular APRs, monthly payments, interest, and payoff timing.

To estimate whether a credit card balance transfer will save money, build two Excel payoff schedules using the same starting debt and monthly payment: one for keeping the balance on your current card, and one for transferring it. Add the transfer fee to the transfer scenario, apply its promotional APR for the offer’s stated term, then use the post-promotion APR on any balance left. Compare the transfer fee plus interest with the interest projected on your current card.

What the comparison should include

A low or 0% promotional APR is only one part of the cost. Balance transfer offers may charge a percentage fee or a fixed fee, and the promotional rate lasts only for a limited period. Check the offer disclosure for the fee, promotional length, and regular APR that applies afterward. The CFPB explains how to review balance-transfer terms at What is a balance transfer?

Compare like with like. Use the same starting debt and planned monthly payment in both scenarios, then record:

  • Transfer fee and how it is charged
  • Projected interest on the current card
  • Projected interest on the transfer balance
  • Transfer fee plus transfer-scenario interest
  • Total amount paid and payoff month in each scenario
  • Balance remaining when the promotional period ends

Under these assumptions, estimated savings equal current-card projected interest minus transfer-scenario interest and fee. A positive result means the transfer costs less in the model; it is not a guarantee of what an issuer will charge.

HP 10bII+ Financial Calculator for College and High School, SAT AP PSAT
  • Brand New in box; The product ships with all relevant accessories
  • Dedicated keys allow easy access to common financial and statistics functions
  • Easy-to-use design provides business, finance and statistical calculations fast
  • Specially designed to meet the mathematical needs

Set up your Excel inputs

Put assumptions in a clearly labeled input area so you can adjust them without rewriting the schedule. Include:

  • Current card balance and APR
  • Amount to transfer
  • Transfer fee percentage and any minimum fee
  • Promotional APR and number of promotional months
  • Post-promotion APR
  • Planned monthly payment
  • Payment timing assumption, such as payment at the end of each month

Use the card agreement and offer disclosure for the actual terms. The fee may be added to the transferred balance or treated as a separate upfront cost; model it according to the agreement. Keep new purchases and other card balances out of a transfer-only comparison unless you add separate balances and rates for them.

Build the current-card payoff schedule

Make one row per month. Use columns for month, beginning balance, APR, estimated interest, payment, principal reduction, and ending balance. For a simple monthly estimate with an unchanged APR, calculate:

  • Time-value-of-money and Amortization keys solve problems including: pension calculations, loans, mortgages, etc.
  • Ideal calculator for students, managers and statisticians

  • The BA II Plus calculator is approved for use on the following professional exams: Chartered Financial Analyst exam. GARP Financial Risk Manager (FRM) exam. Certified Management Accountants exam
  • Monthly interest = beginning balance × APR ÷ 12
  • Principal reduction = payment − monthly interest
  • Ending balance = beginning balance + monthly interest − payment

For example, if the beginning balance is in B2, the annual APR in C2, and the payment in E2, the row formulas could be:

  • Interest in D2: =B2*C2/12
  • Principal reduction in F2: =E2-D2
  • Ending balance in G2: =B2+D2-E2

For the next month, use the prior row’s ending balance as the new beginning balance. If the planned payment would pay off the balance before the scheduled payment amount is due, cap that month’s payment at the amount owed. Avoid allowing a payment below accrued interest to create a misleading negative principal reduction; flag that the assumed payment does not reduce principal.

Build the transfer payoff schedule

Use the same row structure and payment assumption. Set the transfer scenario’s starting balance to the amount transferred plus the fee if the agreement adds the fee to the balance. If it does not, track the fee separately as an upfront cost. Apply the promotional APR for the specified number of months, then use the post-promotion APR for the remaining balance.

  1. In each promotional-period row, use the promotional APR input.
  2. After the stated promotional months, use the post-promotion APR input.
  3. Continue the schedule until the balance is paid off, recording the balance at the end of the promotional period.
  4. Sum the interest column and add any fee not already included in the starting balance.

A formula in the APR column can switch rates based on the month number. For example, if A2 contains the month number, the promotional term is in a named cell PromoMonths, and named cells PromoAPR and RegularAPR hold the rates, use =IF(A2<=PromoMonths,PromoAPR,RegularAPR). Adjust cell references to match your sheet.

Microsoft documents PMT for calculating a periodic payment and IPMT for the interest portion of a payment when the rate and payment schedule are constant for the modeled period. See Microsoft’s PMT function documentation and IPMT function documentation. Since a balance-transfer offer changes rates after its promotional term, a row-by-row schedule is generally easier to inspect and adapt than one constant-rate payment formula.

Interpret the result—and test a slower payoff

Sum each scenario’s interest, add the transfer fee to the transfer scenario’s cost, and compare the totals. The projected payoff month matters too: a transfer can look attractive during the promotional period but leave a substantial balance exposed to the regular APR if repayment takes longer than expected.

Run a second comparison with a lower monthly payment or a longer payoff timeline. This shows how sensitive the result is to repayment pace. The estimate also depends on when the transfer posts, how long the promotion lasts, the APR after it ends, and the issuer’s interest and payment-allocation rules.

Why an Excel estimate may differ from the statement

The monthly-rate method above is a planning estimate, not an exact reproduction of a credit card bill. Many issuers calculate interest daily using average daily balances, and a single account can have balance categories with different APRs. The agreement controls how a fee enters the balance, how interest is calculated, and how payments are allocated. The CFPB’s guidance on how card issuers calculate interest and how they allocate payments explains these account-specific mechanics.

For US cards, CFPB guidance says issuers generally apply the portion of a payment above the minimum to the highest-APR balance, while allocation of the minimum portion is generally left to the issuer. If your account has multiple APR categories or minimum-payment rules affect the result, a single-balance schedule cannot represent the account precisely.

Watch for interest on new purchases

A 0% balance-transfer rate does not necessarily make new purchases interest-free. For most cards, purchases can accrue interest from the transaction date while you carry a balance, even if the transferred balance has a 0% rate. Avoid adding purchases to the model unless you track them separately, and check the card’s terms. See the CFPB’s explanation of credit card grace periods.

This guidance is US-oriented; APR conventions, fees, payment allocation, and interest calculations vary by issuer and jurisdiction. Excel formula availability and interface can also vary by edition.
