Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo calculate federal tax on a mutual-fund capital-gain distribution, start with Form 1099-DIV box 2a, report the amount on Schedule D line 13—or directly on Form 1040 or 1040-SR line 7a if you qualify for that exception—and use the tax-year worksheet that applies to your return. The distribution is generally treated as long-term capital gain even if you recently bought your fund shares. There is no single tax rate to multiply by the box 2a amount; your return’s worksheet determines the tax.
Why a fund distribution can be taxable when you did not sell shares
A mutual fund owns investments such as stocks. If it sells an investment at a gain after holding it for more than a year, it may pass that gain through to shareholders as a capital-gain distribution. The fund can pay the distribution in cash or credit it to your fund account; reinvesting it does not, by itself, remove the reporting requirement. The IRS explains this treatment in its Mutual Funds (Costs, Distributions, etc.) 4 FAQ.
The gain’s character follows the fund’s holding period in the asset it sold, not the time you owned your fund shares. The IRS says to consider capital-gain distributions long-term regardless of how long you have owned the mutual-fund shares.
Find the amount on Form 1099-DIV
Use the amount in box 2a, Total capital gain distributions. Do not add or substitute the amounts in other boxes:

- Box 1a reports ordinary dividends. It is separate from box 2a.
- Box 1b reports qualified dividends, which are included in box 1a. Do not count box 1b a second time as additional dividend income.
- Box 3 reports nondividend distributions. These generally reduce your investment’s basis until it reaches zero; any amount beyond basis is generally treated as capital gain. Box 3 is not the same as box 2a.
A mutual fund’s net realized short-term gains passed through to shareholders are generally included as ordinary dividends, rather than treated as capital-gain distributions. For the treatment of other populated boxes, use the recipient instructions for the tax-year Form 1099-DIV.
Report box 2a on the right line
The federal reporting route depends on whether you must file Schedule D and whether you meet the tax-year instructions’ exception for reporting capital-gain distributions directly on Form 1040 or 1040-SR.

| Reporting route | Where box 2a goes | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Schedule D | Schedule D, line 13 | Use this route when your return requires Schedule D. |
| Direct reporting | Form 1040 or 1040-SR, line 7a, with the corresponding box checked | Use only if you qualify for the exception under the instructions for your tax year. |
Other capital transactions, losses, or special gain categories may mean you need Schedule D or Form 8949, even if box 2a is the only amount you first noticed. Check the Schedule D and Form 1040 instructions before using the direct-reporting exception. The IRS discusses the reporting options in its mutual-fund FAQ and Schedule D instructions.
Use the applicable tax worksheet to calculate the tax
Reporting the distribution is not the same as calculating the tax on it. Use the instructions for the tax year you are filing to determine whether to complete the Qualified Dividends and Capital Gain Tax Worksheet or the Schedule D Tax Worksheet. The worksheet considers the distribution alongside relevant income, qualified dividends, other capital gains and losses, and applicable gain categories. Your filing status and taxable income also affect the result, so multiplying box 2a by a universal percentage will not reliably calculate your tax.

The IRS’s Publication 550 explains investment income and points readers to the worksheets for tax on net capital gain and qualified dividends. Forms and line numbers can change, so do not use an older year’s instructions for a different tax-year return.
Check for other fund-related tax documents
A fund may report undistributed long-term capital gains on Form 2439 rather than Form 1099-DIV. If you receive Form 2439, follow its instructions and account for the tax paid by the fund as directed there and in applicable IRS guidance. If you sold fund shares or had other capital transactions, those transactions may also need to be reported on Schedule D, with Form 8949 for transactions that require it.

This process covers U.S. federal individual income-tax reporting. It does not determine state or local tax treatment, and it cannot establish your personal tax bill without the rest of your return. For an actual filing, follow the forms and instructions for that tax year, particularly if you have other capital transactions, special gain categories, or additional Form 1099-DIV boxes.
