How to Calculate Age 59½ for an IRA Withdrawal

Find your age 59½ date by adding 59 years and six months to your birth date, then compare it with the IRA distribution date. The threshold generally ends the 10% early-distribution additional tax, not income tax on taxable withdrawals.

Add 59 years and six calendar months to your date of birth to find the date you reach age 59½. Compare your IRA distribution date with that date: a distribution before it is generally subject to the 10% early-distribution additional tax unless an exception applies; a distribution on or after it is generally not subject to that additional tax. This is U.S. federal tax guidance based on IRS Publication 590-B (2025).

Calculate your age 59½ date

  1. Write down your full date of birth.
  2. Add 59 years and six months. Add 59 to the birth year and six to the birth month, carrying into the next year if needed.
  3. Compare the result with the distribution date. A distribution before that date is generally an early distribution for the age-based 10% additional-tax rule. A distribution on or after it generally falls outside that rule.

For example, someone born on March 10, 1965 reaches age 59½ on September 10, 2024. A distribution dated September 9 is before that date; one dated September 10 is on it. For a birth date on the 29th, 30th, or 31st, or a leap-day birth, do not assume how a financial institution or tax rule handles an edge-case calendar date without checking with the IRS or a qualified tax professional.

What changes before and after the date

Question Before age 59½ On or after age 59½
10% additional tax Generally applies to the portion of the distribution included in gross income, unless an exception applies. Generally does not apply under the age-based early-distribution rule.
Income tax A taxable distribution may be included in ordinary income. A taxable distribution may still be included in ordinary income.
Reporting Report the distribution as required; Form 5329 may be needed to calculate additional tax or claim an exception. Report the distribution as required; the absence of the 10% additional tax does not make it tax-free.

The age rule and ordinary income tax are separate. The IRS says that after reaching age 59½, you can receive distributions without paying the 10% additional tax; that does not mean every IRA distribution is tax-free. Traditional IRA distributions may be taxable as ordinary income. Roth IRA tax treatment depends on distribution ordering and the qualified-distribution rules. See IRS Publication 590-B for the rules that apply to your account and circumstances.

If you withdraw before age 59½

The additional tax is generally 10% of the distribution amount included in gross income, on top of any income tax due. An exception may eliminate the additional tax for a qualifying distribution, but the requirements vary. IRS-listed examples include certain unreimbursed medical expenses, health insurance premiums during unemployment, disability, terminal illness, distributions to beneficiaries, substantially equal periodic payments, qualified higher-education expenses, first-home costs, an IRS levy, and qualified reservist distributions. Check the conditions in Publication 590-B or IRS Topic 557 before treating an early distribution as exempt.

Age 59½ is not the required minimum distribution age

The age 59½ threshold concerns the 10% additional tax on early distributions; it does not tell you when withdrawals become required. IRS Publication 590-B (2025) says traditional IRA owners generally must begin required minimum distributions at age 73. The two ages govern different rules.

Keep records and check how to report the distribution

  • Keep the account statement and Form 1099-R for the distribution.
  • Determine the taxable amount rather than assuming the entire distribution is taxable—or tax-free.
  • Check the current Form 1040 and Form 5329 instructions. Taxable IRA distributions are reported on Form 1040, and Form 5329 may be required depending on the distribution code and whether you owe the additional tax or claim an exception.

The IRS explains reporting in its IRA distributions and withdrawals FAQs. Rules and forms can change by tax year, so use the instructions for the year of your withdrawal.
