To buy Solana’s native asset, SOL, use a crypto platform that supports SOL and serves your location. Verify your account if required, add funds using an available payment method, select SOL, and review the final price, fees, and amount before confirming. Afterward, you can keep SOL on the platform or withdraw it to a wallet that supports the Solana network.
What you’re buying when you buy Solana
SOL is the asset associated with the Solana network. It is different from a token issued on Solana: choosing a token that happens to use the network is not the same as buying SOL. Check the asset’s name and ticker in the order screen before proceeding.
SOL’s price can fluctuate, and a buying guide cannot establish whether it is suitable for you or predict its future value. Consider how much you can afford to lose, and do not treat a live quote as a lasting price.
How to buy SOL
- Choose a provider that serves your location. Confirm it offers SOL purchases and, if you plan to self-custody, withdrawals over the Solana network. Kraken is one example of a platform with a SOL purchase flow, not a universal or necessarily cheapest option. Its availability and features vary by location and account. Kraken’s SOL purchase page describes its process and applicable restrictions.
- Open and verify your account. Complete any identity checks the provider requires. Verification requirements can depend on the provider and jurisdiction.
- Add funds using an available method. Kraken lists bank wire, ACH, debit or credit cards, and other methods, but not all are available to every customer. Check the funding options shown for your account and any associated costs.
- Select SOL and enter an amount. Choose SOL rather than a similarly named asset or a token issued on Solana. You may be able to enter the amount in your local currency or in SOL.
- Review the order before confirming. Check the quoted exchange rate, any spread or fees, the payment method, and the amount of SOL you will receive. Costs and minimums vary, so rely on the live order preview and current provider terms rather than an old example price.
- Confirm the purchase and choose where to keep your SOL. You can leave it on the platform or withdraw it to a compatible wallet; transferring to a wallet is not required to make a purchase.

- Whether the provider serves your country and what account verification it requires.
- Which funding methods are available to you, and their fees or restrictions.
- The total cost shown at checkout, including the quoted spread and any stated purchase fee.
- Whether SOL withdrawals are supported, along with the current withdrawal cost and network options.
- Whether you prefer platform custody or want the option to manage your own wallet keys.
One platform’s purchase walkthrough cannot establish a complete ranking across providers. Review current terms directly before choosing.
Understand the costs: purchase fees versus network fees
The costs shown by a provider for buying, funding, or withdrawing SOL are distinct from Solana network transaction fees. Solana’s developer documentation specifies a base transaction fee of 5,000 lamports per signature, plus an optional priority fee based on requested compute units. That network rule is not an estimate of what an exchange, card issuer, bank, or withdrawal will charge. Solana’s fee documentation explains the network fee structure.

Keep SOL on the platform or move it to a wallet?
Keeping SOL on a platform can be convenient, while self-custody gives you direct responsibility for the private keys that secure your assets. Protect the account with strong, unique credentials and any additional security features the provider offers. Your access depends on the platform’s account and recovery processes.

If you withdraw to self-custody
First confirm that the destination wallet supports SOL on the Solana network. Carefully check the withdrawal network and destination address before authorizing a transfer. Solana’s official learning material warns: “Transactions on Solana are permanent, so it’s important to double-check addresses.” Solana’s learning material also distinguishes wallet use from simply holding an asset on a platform.
Consider making a small test transfer before sending a larger amount; no particular test amount is prescribed. If you use self-custody, store recovery credentials securely and never share them. A hardware wallet is optional, not a prerequisite for buying SOL; independently verify that any device you consider currently supports Solana.

Do not send real SOL to a development wallet
Solana’s developer quick start describes a Playground wallet for testing and development and explicitly cautions against sending real mainnet assets to it. Test or devnet assets are for experimentation; they are not purchased mainnet SOL. See Solana’s developer quick start.
