To buy an NGX-listed share in the secondary market, choose a currently registered NGX Trading License Holder (usually called a stockbroker), complete its account-opening and KYC process, arrange funding and CSCS holding details with the broker, then place an order through a channel it supports. Check the broker’s current status in the NGX broker directory and request a written, itemized quote for both buying and selling before you trade. For an issuer’s public offer or rights issue, NGX Invest is a separate application route; it is not a general-purpose share-trading account.
First, decide what kind of share purchase you mean
A secondary-market purchase is an order to buy shares already listed on NGX from the market. You place it through a stockbroker that is a registered NGX Trading License Holder. NGX says an appointed securities dealer or stockbroker facilitates account opening and trading in either the primary or secondary market (NGX: Becoming an Investor).

A primary-market subscription is different: it is an application for shares in an issuer’s public offer or a rights issue, when one is available. NGX describes NGX Invest as a platform for those offers, not for routine buying of any listed share on the secondary market. Its FAQ describes registering and verifying details, choosing an available offer and preferred broker, entering a subscription, accepting the applicable prospectus pricing supplement and term sheet, and paying. Live offers vary, so check that an offer is open before applying.

- Check the broker’s current status. Search the NGX Trading License Holder directory, confirm the firm identity and current status, and recheck before sending money or documents. NGX notes that directory categories and statuses can change.
- Compare account terms and service. Ask about the KYC document checklist, any account or minimum-funding requirement, the available order-entry channels and order types, the CSCS or custody arrangement, how confirmations and statements are delivered, customer support and complaints, and a current itemized schedule of charges for buying and later selling. NGX does not set one universal retail minimum on its reviewed onboarding guidance; KYC requirements are supplied by the broker.
- Complete the firm’s official account-opening process. Provide the details and documents the selected broker specifically requests, and use its verified channels. Do not assume another broker’s checklist, BVN process, or minimum applies to this firm.
- Confirm funding and share-holding arrangements. Follow the broker’s funding instructions and ask how your CSCS/CHN details and share custody will be handled. NGX says investors may hold assets through CSCS under their appointed dealer or through a licensed domestic custodian. The NGX Invest option to skip the CHN/CSCS field during initial platform registration applies to that platform registration; it does not establish that a broker can execute a secondary-market trade without the account setup it requires.
- Submit the order through the broker. Specify the listed company or security, quantity, and instructions supported by that broker. NGX describes its market as an electronic order book with price, cross, and time priority; confirm the broker’s available order types and instructions rather than assuming every firm offers the same controls.
- Save the records and check the holding. Keep the order confirmation, contract note, funding record, and broker or CSCS holding statement. Reconcile the trade and cash movement against the documents provided by the broker.
What documents and account details do you need?
There is no single document checklist established for every retail broker in NGX’s general onboarding guidance: NGX says the dealer supplies its KYC requirements. Ask the firm for its current checklist and submit documents only through its official process. Similarly, do not treat a BVN request or a CHN/CSCS field shown in NGX Invest’s platform registration as a universal rule for all brokerage accounts.

Before opening the account, get clear answers on whether the broker will arrange your CSCS/CHN details, how your shares will be held, what statements you will receive, and what you must do to access those records. NGX describes holding through CSCS under an appointed dealer or through a licensed domestic custodian; the arrangement applicable to you should be confirmed with the broker.
How much does it cost to buy shares on NGX?
Ask the chosen broker for a current written estimate of every applicable charge on a buy order and on a later sale, including taxes. Do not rely on a headline commission or assume that the public fee figures below add up to your all-in cost. NGX’s public equities page lists the following figures, but gives no visible publication date; NGX also listed SEC-approved amendments to Trading License Holder pricing methodology on June 16/17, 2026, and the operative fee terms are not clear in the cited page text. Treat the table as a transcription of that public page, not confirmation of the rates currently charged.
Rank #2
| Charge shown on NGX’s public equities fee page | Side and stated basis |
|---|---|
| NGX fee | 0.3% on the sell side |
| CSCS fee | 0.3% on the sell side |
| Trade alert fee | ₦4.00 per side |
| SEC fee | 0.3% on the buy side |
| Stamp duty | 0.08% on each side |
| Brokerage commission | 0.75–1.35% on each side |
| VAT | 7.5% of brokerage and SEC fees on the buy side; 7.5% of NGX, CSCS, and brokerage fees on the sell side |
These are the values displayed by NGX on its undated Trading Market Structure — Equities page, checked in 2026. Their current application after the pricing-methodology amendments is not established by the cited material. Applicability, tax treatment, broker commission, rounding, and effective rules can affect the amount you actually pay, so have the broker itemize its quote rather than calculating an all-in percentage from this table.

When does a share trade settle?
Eligible equity trades cleared and settled by CSCS use T+1: settlement is one business day after the trade date. SEC Nigeria’s May 14, 2026 circular said the cycle took effect June 1, 2026; its August 12, 2026 clarification states that settlement for equities and commodities settled at CSCS is at 5:00 p.m. T+1 and is delivery-versus-payment. See the SEC T+1 transition circular and SEC clarification on implementation. This timing applies to eligible CSCS-settled trades, not necessarily every product or transaction. Ask your broker how its funding and withdrawal workflow relates to settlement.

A share represents part ownership of an issuer, with rights that depend on the share quantity and class. An investor’s return may include a rise in the share price or dividend income, but neither is guaranteed: the price can fall below what you paid, and issuers differ in whether and how regularly they pay dividends. NGX’s overview of equities and share ownership explains these features. A completed purchase is not evidence that the investment will produce a gain.
