How to Buy Physical Gold Safely and Avoid Counterfeit Bars and Coins

A practical U.S.-focused guide to buying physical gold: investigate the dealer, calculate the full spread and fees, screen against official specifications, and verify uncertain bars or coins independently.

The safest way to buy physical gold is to use an established dealer you can independently investigate, compare the complete cost with the current spot price, obtain buyback and custody terms in writing, and treat home weight-and-dimension checks as screening rather than proof. If a bar or coin remains questionable, stop the transaction and use a qualified independent precious-metals professional.

This guide is based mainly on U.S. Mint, Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), and London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) guidance. Dealer regulation, taxes, delivery rules, and consumer protections differ outside the United States.

  • Who exactly is selling the metal, where is the business located, and how long has it operated?
  • What is the exact product, its fine-gold weight, and its total price?
  • How far above the spot price are you paying, and what price will the dealer pay to buy it back?
  • Will the metal be delivered to you or held by a named custodian, and what are the shipping, storage, insurance, and withdrawal charges?
  • What invoice, delivery record, ownership record, and assay or certification documents will you receive?

Spot is the cash price for immediate delivery. Dealers generally sell bullion above spot and buy it back below spot, so your break-even price depends on both the purchase premium and the resale spread. A low advertised price is not necessarily cheap if shipping, storage, commissions, or an unfavorable buyback price absorb the apparent saving.

Choose the form of gold deliberately

Decide first whether your purpose is direct exposure to the metal, convenient resale, collecting, or retirement-account ownership. The U.S. Mint distinguishes bullion products, whose value is primarily tied to their weight in a precious metal, from proof and uncirculated numismatic products, whose prices can reflect rarity, condition, age, or limited mintage. A salesperson describing a product as collectible or “semi-numismatic” may be offering a more complicated and expensive purchase than a straightforward bullion transaction.

Product choice What the official guidance establishes What to compare before buying
American Eagle gold bullion coin The U.S. Mint lists one-ounce, one-half-ounce, one-quarter-ounce, and one-tenth-ounce sizes. Prices include the metal value plus premiums for minting, distribution, and marketing. Fine-gold weight, premium for the exact size, dealer buyback price, shipping, and the Mint’s published dimensions and features.
American Buffalo gold bullion coin The U.S. Mint lists a one-ounce bullion size. The same premium and resale questions apply. Fine-gold weight, quoted premium, buyback spread, and published specifications.
Retail gold bar A small bar is not automatically a London Good Delivery bar. LBMA says its Good Delivery standard concerns wholesale bars and that a one-ounce bar cannot itself be on the Good Delivery List. Bar weight, refiner and serial information where applicable, security features, ownership record, storage terms, and an independent verification option.
Proof, uncirculated, or collectible product The Mint says these products may carry value based on mintage, rarity, condition, or age rather than metal weight alone. Whether you understand the collectible valuation, the dealer’s buyback policy, commissions, and the risk that resale depends on a specialist market.

The Mint does not sell bullion coins directly to the public. It distributes them through authorized purchasers, which supply retail buyers and secondary dealers. “Authorized purchaser” describes a role in the Mint’s distribution system; it is not a substitute for checking the seller’s price, reputation, guarantees, and terms.

How to investigate a dealer

Start with an identifiable business

Obtain the legal business name, physical address, telephone number, written terms, and the name of the person responsible for the sale. For an online seller, check how long the business has operated and search independently for complaints rather than relying only on testimonials displayed on the seller’s site. Confirm that the address is a real operating location and that you can reach the business through more than one channel.

Retail metal dealers are not regulated at the federal level in the United States, according to a CFTC and FINRA consumer bulletin. That statement does not mean that no state or other laws apply; it means you must not assume that a federal regulator has screened every retail dealer. Ask the seller to substantiate any claim about licensing, registration, bonding, or custody, and verify the claim with the relevant authority.

Get a written quote for the exact item

Ask for the product name, fine-gold weight, quantity, price per item, total premium, commission, payment surcharge, shipping, insurance, storage, cancellation terms, and expected delivery date. A quote that gives only a percentage above spot is incomplete unless it identifies the spot-price reference and the time at which the price is fixed.

Request the dealer’s written buyback terms before placing the order. Ask whether the quoted buyback price applies to the same product and condition, whether the dealer can decline a buyback, and which fees or shipping costs you would bear. Keep the quote and the final invoice; verbal assurances are difficult to enforce and easy to misunderstand.

Check the seller’s behavior

Walk away from unsolicited calls, emails, social-media messages, pop-up sellers, or anyone who insists that you must decide immediately. Be skeptical of guaranteed returns, claims that gold cannot lose value, or statements that an offer is available only for a few minutes. The Mint recommends extra scrutiny when a bullion coin is offered below the current market price. A price materially below comparable offers can indicate a bait-and-switch, a misdescribed product, or a counterfeit.

The CFTC and FINRA have stated that, over the decade preceding their 2024 bulletin, the CFTC charged numerous companies with selling overpriced precious metals in alleged fraudulent sales totaling more than $500 million. The figure is an allegation-based enforcement summary, not a claim that every dealer is fraudulent, but it illustrates why written pricing and independent due diligence matter.

Separate marketing claims from evidence

Terms such as “IRA-approved,” “government-backed,” “LBMA,” “exclusive,” or “certified” need a precise explanation. Ask which entity approved the item, what standard is being claimed, who issued a certificate, and what the certificate actually verifies. A dealer’s statement that a small bar came from an LBMA-listed refiner is different from saying that the small bar itself is an LBMA Good Delivery bar.

Calculate the real price

Use the same metal weight and the same product when comparing sellers. A one-ounce coin, a one-ounce bar, and a fractional coin can have very different premiums even though each quote is described as “one ounce” or “gold.” Compare the dealer’s selling price with the current spot reference, then calculate the amount you would lose if you immediately sold at the dealer’s stated buyback price.

Cost element Question to ask Why it matters
Spot price Which cash price for immediate delivery is being used, and when is it fixed? It is the reference point for the metal value, not the final retail price.
Premium How many dollars or what percentage is added for minting, distribution, fabrication, and the dealer’s margin? Premiums vary by product, size, availability, and seller.
Buyback spread What would this dealer pay to buy the identical item back today, before shipping or other deductions? The spread is a direct resale cost and can exceed the apparent purchase discount.
Transaction fees Are there payment, commission, cancellation, or account fees? These charges can turn a seemingly competitive quote into an expensive one.
Delivery or storage Who pays insured shipping, storage, withdrawal, and delivery charges? Custody costs continue after the purchase and affect your break-even price.

Do not compare a promotional first-order price with a normal buyback quote or compare a collectible coin with a low-premium bar. Write down the total amount leaving your account and the realistic amount you could receive on resale. If the dealer refuses to disclose either number, do not proceed.

Screen a coin or bar for counterfeit risk

No universal at-home test authenticates every retail bar and coin. A scale and caliper are useful screening tools, but they do not test composition or certify authenticity. A counterfeit can imitate visible details or dimensions closely enough to pass a casual inspection.

Use official specifications for the exact coin

  1. Find the U.S. Mint’s published weight, diameter, and key design features for the exact bullion coin and size.
  2. Use a calibrated digital pocket scale to compare the coin’s weight with that specification. Record the result rather than relying on how the coin feels in your hand.
  3. Use a caliper to compare the diameter with the published measurement. Check the edge, lettering, date, and other features the Mint identifies.
  4. Inspect the coin under good lighting for incorrect lettering, uneven details, plating damage, unusual color, or a finish inconsistent with the official description.
  5. Stop if any measurement or feature is materially inconsistent. Do not file, scratch, acid-test, or otherwise damage the item in an attempt to prove it.

A result that matches the published dimensions is only a screening result. It cannot establish that the interior is gold, that the fineness is correct, or that the item was not altered. A seller’s guarantee of weight and precious-metal content or a credible third-party certification can add evidence, but you should understand who stands behind the guarantee and what the certification covers.

Check a bar’s identity and security information

LBMA describes recognized bar-security features as physical features intended to establish bar identity and help verify authenticity, similar to a bar passport linked to its Gold Bar Integrity database. LBMA’s specifications and process apply to eligible bars; not every retail bar necessarily carries an LBMA-recognized feature, and a feature does not eliminate the need to verify the transaction, seller, ownership, and condition.

Record the bar’s stated weight, refiner, serial number, packaging, and any accompanying documentation before accepting delivery. If packaging is sealed, ask how a future buyer will verify the bar without breaking the seal and whether the dealer’s buyback policy depends on intact packaging.

Understand what “Good Delivery” means

Good Delivery is a wholesale standard supporting the London market. LBMA’s guide says a qualifying standard-gold Good Delivery bar is approximately 400 troy ounces and explicitly notes that a one-ounce bar cannot be on the Good Delivery List. Therefore, “LBMA Good Delivery” should not be used as a blanket certification for every small retail bar.

When a seller uses the term, ask whether the claim refers to the refiner’s status, the bar’s production under a particular standard, or the bar itself being a listed Good Delivery bar. Those are different claims. Obtain the precise documentation and do not pay a premium for a label you cannot define.

When to use independent professional verification

If a coin or bar fails a screening check, was purchased from an unfamiliar source, has damaged or inconsistent packaging, or is worth enough that a mistake would be material to you, pause the transaction and use a qualified independent precious-metals professional. “Independent” means the verifier is not financially dependent on completing the sale or on selling you a replacement item.

Before handing over the metal, ask:

  • What testing method will be used?
  • Does the method assess only dimensions and weight, or can it establish composition and fineness?
  • Will the item be opened, marked, or damaged?
  • What written result and chain-of-custody record will you receive?
  • What credentials, experience, insurance, and conflict-of-interest policy does the professional have?

The cited consumer guidance does not identify a universal retail assay provider or endorse one testing method for every product. Treat a professional opinion as evidence with a stated scope, not as an unexplained guarantee.

Decide between delivery and third-party storage

Choose custody before you pay. For home delivery, confirm the shipping carrier, insurance during transit, signature requirement, and what happens if the package is delayed, lost, or visibly tampered with. Photograph the package and contents when received, retain all packing materials, and report discrepancies promptly under the dealer’s written procedure.

For third-party storage, obtain the exact facility name and physical location, the legal owner of the metal, the storage and withdrawal fees, delivery timetable, inspection or statement schedule, and the scope of insurance. Ask whether your records identify specific bars or coins or merely an account balance, and what document proves your ownership if the dealer or custodian fails.

The CFTC warns about arrangements that do not identify where physical metal is located, claims of overseas storage that cannot be verified, missing documentation, and purported storage in which the metal does not exist. Do not send funds until you can independently verify the custodian and the existence of the arrangement. The CFTC also notes that home-held metal may not be covered by homeowners insurance, while a bank or storage facility is likely to charge fees. Read your policy and the storage contract rather than assuming either protection.

Keep a complete transaction file

Store the signed order, item description, fine-gold weight, quoted and final price, spot-price reference, premium, buyback terms, payment confirmation, shipping record, delivery signature, storage agreement, ownership statement, and any assay or certification report. Record serial numbers and photograph the item and packaging without exposing security information publicly.

These records help you challenge an incorrect shipment, establish ownership, calculate your eventual gain or loss, and provide evidence to an insurer, custodian, tax professional, or law-enforcement agency. Tax treatment and reporting obligations vary by jurisdiction; keep records long enough to meet the rules that apply where you live and ask a qualified tax professional about your circumstances.

Recognize storage, financing, and rollover traps

Be cautious when a salesperson proposes financing, a complicated lease, a “metal account,” or a rollover that makes it difficult to tell whether you own delivered physical gold. Read every agreement for delivery obligations, interest or account charges, liquidation rights, and what happens if you stop paying.

CFTC and FINRA specifically warn people considering a precious-metals self-directed IRA rollover to examine fees, commissions, custodian services, and tax consequences. Some sales pitches use pressure or expensive collectible products. A rollover can create tax and administrative consequences beyond the metal’s price, so consult a qualified financial or tax professional before making a substantial retirement-account change. Physical gold is not a guaranteed way to preserve wealth or outperform a diversified portfolio.

What to do if you suspect fraud or a counterfeit

  1. Stop further payments and do not resell or alter the item.
  2. Preserve the item, packaging, messages, recordings, invoices, payment records, and shipping evidence.
  3. Request a written explanation and refund or repurchase under the contract, keeping communications factual and dated.
  4. Obtain an independent professional assessment that states what was tested and what the result establishes.
  5. Notify your payment provider, insurer, custodian, and the appropriate state or local consumer-protection authority when relevant.
  6. Report suspected fraud to the appropriate regulator or law-enforcement agency, especially where the seller used false licensing, nonexistent storage, or deceptive investment claims.

Do not rely on a seller’s promise to “fix” an authenticity problem by exchanging the item for another product unless you have independently verified the replacement and all costs.

Geographic and regulatory limits

The procedures above reflect U.S.-centered guidance. Outside the United States, confirm your national mint’s distribution rules, local dealer licensing, import and delivery requirements, tax treatment, consumer remedies, and privacy obligations. An American authorized-purchaser designation, a U.S. state registration, or a U.S. storage arrangement does not automatically provide protection in another country.

A practical decision rule

Buy only when you can independently identify the seller, explain the product’s fine-gold weight, calculate the premium and resale spread, verify delivery or storage in writing, and preserve complete records. Use Mint specifications and basic measuring tools to screen a coin, not to certify it. For any unresolved doubt, defer the purchase until an independent professional can state what the item is and what the test proves.
