You can buy ETH through a centralized exchange or, where available, through a purchase service offered inside a wallet. Before choosing, check that the service operates where you live and compare its live quote, payment method, and withdrawal costs. The key safety decision is custody: an exchange controls ETH held in your exchange account, while a self-custody wallet puts the keys—and responsibility for protecting them—in your hands.
What you are buying—and where
ETH is Ethereum’s native cryptocurrency. A centralized exchange is one way to buy it with traditional currency, but eligibility, payment options, and services vary by country. Ethereum.org maintains an informational directory of ways to get ETH; inclusion in that directory is not an endorsement.

Some wallet applications also offer purchase flows through third-party providers. In that case, check which company processes the purchase, what amount of ETH you will receive, and who will hold it after the transaction. Availability and terms can vary by provider.

When ETH remains in a centralized exchange account, the exchange has custody. You access the account under the exchange’s rules, rather than controlling the wallet’s private keys yourself. Review the exchange’s identity checks, account-security options, payment methods, withdrawal rules, and current pricing before depositing money.

Withdraw to a self-custody wallet
A wallet application lets you access an Ethereum account and sign transactions. Wallets come in formats such as mobile apps, browser wallets or extensions, desktop software, and physical hardware devices. With self-custody, you control the keys, but you must preserve the recovery phrase and secure the device. Ethereum.org’s wallet guide explains the basic options and responsibilities.
There is no ordinary password reset for a self-custody wallet: if you lose the necessary recovery credentials, you may permanently lose access. A hardware wallet is an optional physical device designed to keep keys offline. Ethereum.org names Ledger and Trezor as examples, not as a requirement or endorsement. A hardware device does not protect you if you reveal your recovery phrase or approve a transaction you have not checked.

Compare the full cost before confirming
There is no single buying fee that applies across exchanges, countries, payment methods, and purchase sizes. A provider may charge a purchase or conversion fee, build a spread into its quoted rate, or charge to withdraw ETH. Ethereum.org’s wallet directory includes provider-specific fee terms, including variable fees and stated ranges; those details can change and should not be treated as a universal rate.

Also distinguish provider charges from an Ethereum network transaction fee. The provider’s purchase costs relate to buying or converting ETH; a network fee may apply when you send ETH in an on-chain transaction. Check the transaction screen and the provider’s current terms for the route you are using.
Buy and secure ETH step by step
- Check local availability. Confirm that the exchange or wallet purchase provider serves your country and accepts your intended payment method. Use its verified official website or app; do not follow unsolicited links.
- Review account protections and terms. Understand any identity checks, available two-factor authentication, payment rules, withdrawal limits, and how the provider handles custody. Use a strong, unique account password.
- Compare the live quote. Review the amount paid, quoted rate, any fee or spread, and the amount of ETH to be credited. If you plan to withdraw, check the withdrawal cost too.
- Decide who should control the keys. You can leave the ETH in exchange custody or withdraw it to a self-custody wallet you have set up. If using self-custody, back up the recovery phrase offline and protect it from loss, theft, and discovery. Do not photograph or screenshot it where it might sync to a cloud account.
- Verify before sending. If withdrawing or making another on-chain transfer, check the full destination address and transaction details before signing. Confirm the details on your signing device, not just on a potentially compromised screen.
Recognize scams and irreversible mistakes
Ethereum transactions are final: once an on-chain transfer is made, it cannot be reversed by Ethereum support. A mistaken address or a transfer approved after a scammer’s instructions can therefore mean permanent loss. Check the recipient address and transaction details carefully every time you sign.

- Never share a recovery phrase or private key with a website, supposed support agent, or anyone else. No legitimate support representative needs it.
- Use only the verified official domain or app for an exchange or wallet. Bookmark a web wallet instead of relying on links in messages or search ads.
- Be suspicious of giveaway promises, unsolicited support messages, and paid “recovery” offers. Ethereum.org says it is an educational website, not a wallet, exchange, or financial platform, and that its staff will not contact users first.
- If you use self-custody, keep the recovery phrase offline and private; if you use an exchange, secure the exchange account and understand its withdrawal and recovery process.
