You can buy cryptocurrency with a credit card on some platforms, but availability depends on your country, the platform, and your card issuer. Before you pay, confirm that the platform accepts credit cards for your account, ask your issuer whether it permits the transaction and how it will classify it, and compare the full cost shown at checkout. A card purchase may also come with a withdrawal hold.
Can you buy crypto with a credit card?
Sometimes. Payment options differ by platform and location, and a card accepted by one service may not work on another. For example, Coinbase’s current general buying guidance says credit cards cannot be used to purchase crypto assets, while Crypto.com and Kraken document card-purchase flows for eligible customers. Those provider-specific statements are not a universal rule; check the current payment options for your country and account.

Even if a platform accepts your card, your issuer may decline the charge or apply different terms. The exchange’s payment form cannot tell you how your card issuer will classify the transaction.

How to buy crypto with a credit card
- Check card eligibility for your location. Review the platform’s supported payment methods for your country and account before starting. Do not assume credit cards are accepted just because a debit card is listed.
- Contact your card issuer. Ask whether it permits crypto purchases, whether it treats them as cash advances, and whether cash-advance or foreign-transaction fees and different interest terms apply.
- Select the asset and amount. In the platform’s app or website, choose the cryptocurrency and purchase amount, then select a credit card if that option is available. Follow any card verification or authentication steps. Crypto.com’s app instructions, for example, describe adding and verifying a card before selecting it as the funding source.
- Inspect the final preview. Check the amount of crypto, quoted price, platform fee, any network fee, and the total charged to your card. Crypto.com says its applicable admin fee appears in the trade preview. Kraken says its confirmation screen shows the asset volume, quoted price, fees, and cash amount.
- Submit only if the terms work for you. Read any notice about withdrawal restrictions and finality before confirming. On Kraken, purchases are final and non-refundable; certain instant card or digital-wallet purchases may also trigger a withdrawal hold of up to 72 hours.
What fees and costs should you check?
There is no single fee for buying crypto with a credit card. The total can depend on the platform, payment route, market conditions, and your card issuer. Review the amount on the platform’s final screen and check your card terms separately.

- Platform and payment fees: These may vary by service and transaction. Crypto.com says its admin fee can be affected by market conditions, promotions, volatility, and liquidity, and that the applicable fee is shown before submission. Its Crypto.com Pay On-ramp disclosure specifies a 3.99% transaction fee plus the network fee for that service only; that figure is not a general rate for card-funded crypto purchases.
- Issuer fees and interest: Your issuer may classify a crypto purchase as a cash advance. NerdWallet describes 3% to 5% as a usual cash-advance-fee range, but that is secondary consumer guidance, not a prediction of your card’s terms. Cash advances may also carry a higher interest rate and accrue interest from day one. Ask your issuer about your account’s treatment before buying.
- Foreign-transaction or merchant-category charges: Crypto.com cautions that issuers may add international-transaction or merchant-category-code fees. Ask the issuer if either could apply to your purchase.
Crypto.com states: “The applicable admin fee will be listed in the trade preview screen which will be surfaced before you submit your transaction.” This describes Crypto.com’s purchase flow; other providers may display fees differently.
Why might you not be able to withdraw immediately?
A card purchase can be completed quickly without making the crypto immediately available to withdraw. Kraken’s September 16, 2026 guide says certain instant card or digital-wallet purchases may trigger a withdrawal hold for up to 72 hours. That hold is specific to the purchase types and terms Kraken describes, not a standard rule across crypto platforms. Check the provider’s withdrawal terms before you buy, especially if you need to move the crypto soon after purchase.

When is a bank transfer a better option?
If cards are unavailable or their total cost is unattractive, compare bank account or wire transfers where the platform supports them. Coinbase lists bank account and wire transfer among its supported methods in its general buying guidance, and NerdWallet describes bank transfers as a common way to pay for crypto.
