For most European investors looking for direct access to China Construction Bank (CCB), the first listing to check is its Hong Kong H-share, ticker 939. Search for the issuer and ticker in the brokerage account you will use, then verify that the order preview shows the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and the intended share class. CCB’s Shanghai A-share, ticker 601939, is a separate security and may require an eligible cross-border trading route supported by your broker.
Choose the listing you want to buy
China Construction Bank has two distinct share listings. The bank identifies its H-shares as trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange Main Board under ticker 939, and its A-shares as trading on the Shanghai Stock Exchange under ticker 601939 (CCB investor FAQ). They are not interchangeable search results: check the exchange and share class as well as the name “China Construction Bank” before placing an order.
| Listing | Issuer ticker | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Hong Kong H-shares | 939 | That your broker permits Hong Kong trading and offers this instrument to your account; confirm the quote and order preview show the Hong Kong listing. |
| Shanghai A-shares | 601939 | That the security is currently eligible for the relevant access route and your broker supports that route for your account. |
The bank says its board lot is 1,000 H-shares or 100 A-shares (CCB investor FAQ). Treat these as the issuer’s stated lot sizes, not a guarantee that every broker will accept every quantity or handle odd lots in the same way. Check the quantity control and order preview in your account.
How to buy the Hong Kong-listed H-share
- Check your account’s market access. Review your broker’s permissions or market-access settings for Hong Kong stocks. General Hong Kong access does not prove that CCB is available to every client or account type.
- Search the instrument. Enter “China Construction Bank” or ticker 939 in the account you will use. Confirm the issuer, Hong Kong exchange and H-share listing in the security details.
- Review the order controls. Check that your intended quantity and order type are accepted, and account for the issuer’s stated 1,000-share H-share board lot. Do not assume odd-lot handling is uniform across brokers.
- Calculate the full cost. Check commission and any minimum charge, exchange and regulatory fees, stamp duty where applicable, and the cost of converting or funding in the order currency. The broker’s current fee schedule and account-specific disclosures are the relevant figures.
- Review and submit only if the order is correct. Before confirming, recheck ticker, exchange, quantity, order type, currency and estimated charges in the final preview.
- After execution, keep the confirmation. Review the fill and resulting holding in your account, and use your broker’s guidance for statements, custody records and any country-specific reporting.
For a broker-specific example, Interactive Brokers says clients can request Hong Kong stock trading permission subject to its account process and review. Its Hong Kong pricing page sets out that provider’s commissions and related charges; rates and fees can change, and they are not a universal estimate for European investors (Hong Kong trading permissions; stock commissions and fees).

When the Shanghai A-share route may be possible
Buying ticker 601939 is not simply the same process as buying a Hong Kong share. One possible cross-border route is Stock Connect, but availability depends on current security eligibility, the broker’s support and the investor’s account. Do not treat the existence of the Shanghai listing as confirmation that it can be traded through your European account; check the current eligible list and broker order ticket.
CCB (Asia) describes operational and currency considerations for Stock Connect, including RMB exposure for investors whose home currency is not RMB, different market calendars and trading mechanisms, quotas, and the possibility of restrictions or suspension (CCB (Asia) Stock Connect information). These route-specific issues are additional to the ordinary possibility of price changes in the share itself.

Costs and account checks before you trade
A quoted commission is only one part of a cross-border share purchase. Before submitting an order, use your broker’s current schedule and account disclosures to check:
- Trading commission and any minimum per-order charge.
- Exchange, clearing or regulatory charges, and stamp duty where applicable.
- Currency conversion costs and the currency needed to fund or settle the trade.
- Whether a displayed fee applies to your account, route and transaction size.
Availability, fees and supported order controls vary by broker and may change. Ask the provider about the specific ticker and account rather than relying only on a generic market-access page.

Country-specific rules and investment risk
“European broker” does not identify one set of onboarding, tax, custody or investor-protection rules. These can depend on your country, the broker’s local legal entity and the account you hold. Confirm account eligibility and relevant protections directly with that entity, and consult competent national sources for tax and reporting duties.
Access to a security is not an investment recommendation. The listing and operational information above does not establish whether CCB is suitable for you or whether its shares are appropriately valued. Consider your own circumstances and the risks of investing before placing an order.
