How to Buy Bitcoin: Exchanges, Fees, and Safe Storage

Compare the full cost of buying bitcoin, from the quoted price and provider charges to withdrawal and network fees. Then weigh exchange custody against the responsibilities of controlling your own keys.

You can buy bitcoin through a provider that serves your location, but the purchase price is only part of the cost. Compare the quoted price, purchase and payment charges, and bitcoin withdrawal fee before placing an order. Then decide whether to leave the bitcoin with the provider or control the keys yourself: the first choice relies on the provider, while the second makes you responsible for protecting the keys and recovery information.

How do you buy bitcoin through an exchange?

Provider availability, payment methods, and terms vary by location and change over time. Before comparing offers, confirm that a provider serves your location. Then evaluate the same hypothetical purchase amount and payment method at each provider; otherwise, differences in price and costs may make the comparison misleading.

  1. Check the provider and its terms. Confirm that it serves your location, read its current fee schedule, and understand how it handles custody and withdrawals.
  2. Compare the price and purchase costs. Review the quoted execution price or spread alongside any trading or purchase charge. A displayed bitcoin price alone may not show the full cost.
  3. Check the payment method costs. Look for any deposit or payment-related charge that applies to the method you plan to use.
  4. Review the order before submitting it. Check the final order preview for the amount of bitcoin you would receive and the total charges shown. Provider interfaces and fee labels differ, so consult the live schedule as well as the preview.
  5. Check the withdrawal terms before buying. Find out what it costs to withdraw bitcoin and whether any account-opening, ongoing, transfer, or closure fees apply.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s investor education materials advise asking custodians about annual asset-based, transaction, asset-transfer, setup, and account-closure fees. The SEC’s December 2025 bulletin reflects staff views, not a Commission rule or regulation.

What fees do bitcoin exchanges charge?

Separate provider charges from the Bitcoin network fee. Provider charges relate to buying, holding, or withdrawing through that provider. A network fee is associated with an on-chain transaction; it is not the same thing as an exchange’s withdrawal charge, even if the provider collects or displays it as part of a withdrawal.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Cost to check What to look for
Quoted price or spread The execution price offered for the same hypothetical amount and payment method. Compare it separately from any listed charge.
Purchase or trading charge A transaction charge for buying bitcoin, if applicable.
Payment or deposit cost Any charge associated with the payment method or adding funds.
Bitcoin withdrawal charge The provider’s charge to withdraw bitcoin. Check whether it is separate from the network fee.
Other account or custody fees Ask about ongoing or annual asset-based, transfer, setup, and account-closure fees.
Bitcoin network fee The fee associated with the on-chain transaction. It is based on transaction data size, not the bitcoin value being sent.

Bitcoin.org explains that a transaction carrying more data can require a different fee than one carrying less data, regardless of the value sent. If the fee is below the network’s current prioritization level, the first confirmation may take considerably longer. There is no fixed fee or guaranteed confirmation time to assume from the amount of bitcoin alone.

Fee schedules vary by provider and may change. Use the provider’s current schedule and the final order preview rather than relying on an old quote or a comparison that uses a different payment method or order size.

Should you leave bitcoin on an exchange or move it to a wallet?

The main distinction is who controls the private keys. With exchange custody, the provider controls them and you depend on its security, solvency, and withdrawal practices. With self-custody, you control the keys, but you also have to protect them and retain the information needed to recover access. Bitcoin.org summarizes the trade-off this way: “When you hold your own private keys, you control your bitcoin—but you are also responsible for keeping it secure.”

Consideration Exchange custody Self-custody
Who controls the keys? The provider controls the keys. You control the keys.
Who authorizes withdrawals? Withdrawals depend on the provider’s systems and practices. You authorize transactions using your keys and wallet.
Main exposure You depend on the provider’s security and ability to maintain access and process withdrawals; access may be affected by a hack, failure, insolvency, or freeze. You bear responsibility for protecting the keys and recovery information. Losing them can mean permanent loss of access.
Security and backup responsibility You must protect your account access; the provider is responsible for its custody systems. You must secure the device or wallet and keep recovery information safe and usable.
Convenience Keeping assets with the provider may be convenient for account-based access and transactions. You handle access and recovery yourself, which requires more personal responsibility.
Fees to hold or move bitcoin Check the provider’s current custody, account, and withdrawal fees. Check any wallet or device cost and the network fee when making an on-chain transaction.

Third-party custodians may use hot or cold storage, and the SEC cautions that some may commingle assets or use them as collateral. Ask about safeguards, privacy, fees, and the exact scope of any insurance; an insurance claim does not establish that every customer loss is covered. Bitcoin.org likewise warns that relying on a custodian means relying on that party’s security and solvency.

How can you protect account access, recovery information, and privacy?

  • Use a strong, unique password for an online account and enable multi-factor authentication where available.
  • Be wary of messages and links that ask for passwords, private keys, or seed phrases. Never share private keys or seed phrases.
  • If you use self-custody, keep recovery information private and securely backed up. Avoid making a single copy or location the only way to recover access.
  • Understand the privacy limits before transacting. Bitcoin transactions are public and permanent; anyone can see the balance and transactions associated with an address. An address is not automatically a legal identity, but purchase and usage information can link an address to a person. Bitcoin should not be treated as anonymous.
  • Do not assume bitcoin held with a wallet provider or exchange has protections equivalent to an FDIC-insured bank deposit or SIPC-covered brokerage securities. The SEC warns that those protections do not apply in the same way.

Do you need a hardware wallet?

No. A hardware wallet is an optional physical device that keeps keys offline; it is one way to approach self-custody, not a substitute for understanding recovery and backup. The SEC notes that physical cold-wallet devices typically have a purchase cost. A device does not make self-custody automatic: you still need to protect the recovery information and know how you would restore access if the device were lost or damaged.

If you are considering a bitcoin hardware wallet, research which assets and software it supports, how its backup and recovery process works, and whether you are buying from an authentic vendor. No particular model is assessed here.

Is a bitcoin exchange-traded product the same as buying bitcoin?

No. A bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP) can provide price exposure without requiring you to transact directly on a crypto trading platform or manage wallet keys, but it is not bitcoin held in your personal wallet. The SEC says a spot bitcoin or ether ETP’s sponsor fee typically covers operating expenses. Review the product’s current documents and costs; an ETP is a different way to seek exposure, not a wallet or a guarantee of safety.

What should you check before choosing?

  • Whether the provider serves your location and supports the payment method you intend to use.
  • The quoted price, purchase charge, payment costs, and withdrawal fee for the same order amount.
  • Any ongoing, setup, transfer, account-closure, or custody charges.
  • Who controls the keys, how withdrawals work, and what happens if the provider restricts access or fails.
  • If choosing self-custody, whether you can securely protect the keys and recovery information.

Tax consequences and legal treatment depend on jurisdiction. Check current official guidance for your location rather than assuming the rules are the same everywhere.
