To buy BHP or Codan shares, open an account with an ASX participant broker, fund it, then search for BHP’s ASX ticker BHP or Codan’s ticker CDA and place an order. Check the company name in the order ticket before submitting: a ticker identifies the security, but buying either share is an investment decision, not a recommendation.
What you need before placing an ASX order
- An ASX participant broker: ASX shares are traded through a broker. ASX says buyers and sellers need a CHESS sponsoring broker to trade shares on ASX. See the ASX guide to buying and selling investments and its investor FAQs.
- A funded account: Many brokers require you to open an account before trading and may require a linked cash management account. Account-opening steps, funding options and timing vary, so check the broker’s current requirements.
- The right security code: BHP trades as ASX:BHP; Codan trades as ASX:CDA. Confirm both the ticker and company name shown by your broker. ASX company information is available for BHP and Codan.
Choose a broker that fits how you want to invest
An online broker generally lets you make your own investment decisions and place trades without advice about whether a security is suitable for you. A full-service broker or adviser may offer recommendations and research, and usually charges more. Use the ASX broker and adviser directory to find providers, then compare their current terms; the directory is a starting point, not an endorsement.

Check the provider’s current fee schedule rather than relying on a quoted “typical” price. How to place an order for BHP or Codan
- Open and fund the broker account. Complete the broker’s application and identity checks, if required, and arrange funds according to its instructions. Confirm how the account will be funded before you trade.
- Search the ticker. Enter BHP for BHP or CDA for Codan. Verify the company name and security in the order ticket; do not submit an order based on a ticker alone.
- Set the order details. Choose how many shares to buy and the price at which you are willing to buy. Your broker sends the order to the market. A trade occurs when your buy order matches a sell order; submitting an order does not by itself guarantee execution.
- Review and submit. Check the ticker, quantity, price and any displayed charges or order conditions in the broker’s ticket before confirming. The exact ticket and available order choices depend on the broker.
- Arrange settlement. ASX guidance says payment is due within two days of execution (T+2). Follow your broker’s settlement and funding instructions, and make sure the required funds are available.
- Keep your records. Retain the trade confirmation and holding statements. ASX describes CHESS holding statements as records of transactions and holdings in a CHESS account; issuer-sponsored holdings have their own statements.
Costs and risks to weigh
Brokerage may apply to each buy or sell, and some platforms charge monthly or inactivity fees. These charges reduce returns, so check the broker’s fee schedule and account terms before opening or using an account.
#1 Best Overall
A share represents part ownership of a company, but its market price can fall. If you sell for less than you paid, you may realise a loss. Whether BHP or Codan is appropriate depends on your circumstances, time horizon and tolerance for risk; this buying process does not establish that either company suits you. Consider advice from an appropriately qualified adviser if you need a personal recommendation.
