How to Buy and Sell Cryptocurrency in South Korea

A practical guide to checking reported-provider status, comparing account requirements, placing trades, moving crypto, and understanding South Korea’s 2026 rules.

To buy or sell cryptocurrency in South Korea, first verify that the exact service and legal entity are currently reported to the Korea Financial Intelligence Unit (KoFIU), then follow that provider’s current onboarding, funding, trading, and withdrawal instructions. Do not assume that a familiar app, an overseas platform, or a referral offer is lawful or available to you. Check the order and destination before confirming, and ask the provider what information it requires for transfers.

Rules and provider procedures can change. The Financial Services Commission (FSC) reported 28 virtual asset service providers (VASPs) as of June 24, 2026; that dated count is not a substitute for checking KoFIU’s current list. The steps below explain how to make the key decisions without assuming every exchange has the same bank, identity, fee, or residency requirements.

Before opening an account: verify the provider

South Korea’s reporting framework applies to operators serving domestic users. The FSC’s June 24, 2026 notice warned consumers about unreported operators, including overseas services soliciting Korean customers, private exchange businesses, and referral promotions. It said using such operators can expose customers to lost funds, excessive fees, weak security, and limited recourse.

Check the exact service and legal entity against the current KoFIU reported-provider list before providing identification, connecting a bank account, or sending money or cryptocurrency. The FSC named Upbit, Korbit, Coinone, Bithumb, and GOPAX among reported services in its June 2026 notice, but those names are a snapshot from that date—not a current endorsement, ranking, or guarantee that a particular service will accept your application.

  • Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
  • Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
  • Match the service and company name to the official list; do not rely only on a similar app name, a search result, or a promoter’s claim.
  • Confirm that the service accepts your residency status and identity documents. Eligibility is provider-specific and is not established by a provider’s reported status.
  • Do not treat absence from a warning list as proof that an operator is lawful. The FSC explicitly cautioned that an operator missing from a published warning list may still be unreported.
  • Reject promises of guaranteed or unusually high returns, exclusive information, or a “global listing.” Do not share login credentials, private keys, or identity documents with an unverified operator.

For the legal status of a provider, use the current official list rather than a dated article or an old provider count. For account eligibility and service details, check the provider’s own current terms and support materials.

Compare providers on the details that affect your use

There is no universal South Korean exchange setup established by the official materials cited here. The FSC and other official sources do not provide a comparable exchange-by-exchange table of fees, supported assets, bank links, cash-out methods, identity documents, or residency rules. Verify these items directly before you choose or fund an account.

What to check Why it matters What to verify
Reported status A service’s presence on the current KoFIU list is a threshold check, not a recommendation. Exact service and legal entity on the current list; do not rely on the June 2026 snapshot alone.
Eligibility Reported status does not establish that a provider can onboard every customer. Whether it accepts your residence status and identity documents, and any account restrictions that apply to you.
KRW funding and cash-out Funding and withdrawal arrangements may differ by provider and customer circumstances. Available KRW deposit and withdrawal methods, any bank requirements, processing instructions, and applicable limits.
Trading costs and assets Fees and supported assets can affect the total cost and whether the asset you want is available. Current fee schedule, supported trading pairs, order types, and any applicable limits or conditions.
Crypto withdrawals Transfers can require additional information and blockchain transfers may be difficult to reverse. Supported destination services and networks, transfer limits, required recipient or purpose details, and withdrawal controls.
Custody Keeping assets with a provider and holding them in your own wallet place different responsibilities on you. Whether you intend to leave assets with the provider or withdraw to a personal wallet, and what safeguards and procedures each option requires.

Compare like with like: use the same asset, order type, funding amount, and intended withdrawal route when reviewing providers’ current terms. Do not assume that a provider’s advertised trading fee represents every cost of buying, selling, funding, or transferring.

How to buy cryptocurrency

The specific screens and requirements depend on the provider. The sequence below is a decision guide, not a claim that every service uses the same account-opening process or payment method.

  • Trusted by 6 million users worldwide (4.9 App Store, 4.8 Google Play) - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets
  1. Verify the provider and your eligibility. Check its exact legal entity on KoFIU’s current reported-provider list, then confirm directly that it accepts customers with your residence status and available identity documents.
  2. Read its current account and funding instructions. Follow the provider’s own onboarding process and confirm any identity checks, linked-bank requirements, deposit route, limits, and fees that apply to you. Do not send a deposit until you understand how the provider will credit it and how you can withdraw KRW.
  3. Secure the account before funding it. Use the provider’s available account-security controls and keep credentials private. Never disclose your password, authentication codes, or wallet private keys to someone claiming to help with a deposit or trade.
  4. Choose the asset and inspect the trading screen. Check the asset name, trading pair, order type, quoted price, amount, and any displayed charges or conditions. A familiar token name alone is not enough to identify an asset when using a decentralized exchange; contract-address checks are especially important there.
  5. Review the order before submitting it. Confirm that the KRW amount or crypto quantity is what you intend, and understand whether the order executes immediately or may remain open under the selected order type. The exact behavior and labels are provider-specific.
  6. Check the result and keep records. Confirm whether the order filled, partially filled, or remains open, and retain account statements and transaction records for your own tracking and any tax questions.

Before placing an order, decide how much you can afford to lose and avoid borrowing or relying on promised returns. Crypto prices can move sharply; the FSC’s warnings about high-return promises are a reason to treat promotional claims as a risk signal, not as investment evidence.

How to sell cryptocurrency and withdraw KRW

Selling an asset and withdrawing the proceeds are separate actions. A completed sale does not itself establish that KRW has reached your bank account; check the provider’s current cash-out method, requirements, timing, and limits.

  1. Check what you hold and where it is held. If the crypto is in a personal wallet or another provider, first verify that the selected South Korean provider supports the asset and the exact network or transfer route. Do not send an asset to a deposit address until the provider’s instructions match.
  2. Review the sell order. Confirm the asset, trading pair, order type, quantity, price conditions, and charges shown on the order screen. Decide whether you want to sell all or only part of the holding.
  3. Confirm execution. Check the provider’s order history or balance to see what actually sold and the proceeds credited. An order that is still open is not the same as a completed sale.
  4. Use the provider’s stated KRW withdrawal procedure. Confirm the destination details, account eligibility, limits, fees, and any additional checks before submitting a withdrawal request.
  5. Save the transaction trail. Keep records of the sale and withdrawal confirmation. They can help reconcile balances and support later questions about tax treatment.

Do not assume that a provider’s deposit method, withdrawal method, or fees are identical to another provider’s. If the account or bank destination does not match the provider’s requirements, stop and ask the provider for the current procedure rather than improvising with a third party.

Sending crypto to another provider or a personal wallet

A withdrawal to another service or wallet is a blockchain transfer, not simply an internal account movement. An incorrect address, asset, or network can make recovery difficult or impossible. Before sending, check the sending provider’s current instructions and the receiving destination’s deposit requirements.

  • Confirm that the asset and network are supported at both ends. A matching token name does not establish that two networks or addresses are compatible.
  • Check the destination address and any required memo, tag, or other identifying information against the recipient’s instructions. Do not rely on an address copied from an old transfer.
  • Review the amount, current provider limits, displayed charges, and any minimum or other transfer conditions.
  • Answer provider requests for sender, recipient, destination, or purpose information accurately. The provider may need these details to process a transfer under the current rules.
  • Do not proceed if the recipient, address, network, or instructions are uncertain. Ask the sending and receiving providers to clarify before confirming.

Under the revised framework described by the FSC in 2026, the travel rule applies to transfers between domestic VASPs regardless of transfer size. The FSC also describes conditional permitted cases for transfers from a domestic VASP to overseas VASPs or wallet services, prohibits high-risk transfers, and requires reporting to KoFIU for transfers worth KRW 10 million or more. Applicability depends on the framework and the transfer; check the provider’s current instructions rather than assuming that a transfer is automatically allowed or that the user personally files a report.

The FSC said about 60 percent of transfers between domestic VASPs in the second half of 2025 were below KRW 1 million. It cited that statistic as context for extending the travel rule to transfers of all sizes. It is a policy-context figure, not a threshold below which a user can skip provider checks.

Understand the 2026 rule changes

On August 11, 2026, the FSC announced that amendments strengthening VASP registration and anti-money-laundering requirements had been approved. The FSC said the registration and retired-employee sanction provisions took effect on August 20, 2026; it said the other changes take effect six months after promulgation. The announcement also describes stronger registration scrutiny, customer due diligence, and information duties around transfers.

For a customer, the practical implication is to expect a provider to ask for information relevant to identity, a recipient, a destination, or the purpose of a transfer, as appropriate. Requirements and processing steps may vary by transaction and provider. If a transfer is delayed or refused, use the provider’s official support channel to find out what information or action is needed; do not try to bypass controls by splitting a transfer or routing it through an unverified intermediary.

Using a decentralized exchange is a different risk decision

A decentralized exchange (DEX) is not interchangeable with a reported centralized provider that handles a customer account. The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), in guidance dated June 16, 2026, warned that DEX trading may lack listing review and can expose users to rug pulls, lookalike tokens, insufficient liquidity, sharp price moves, and limited remedies after an incident.

The FSS recommends checking an asset’s contract address, concentration among its largest holders, liquidity, listings on other exchanges, transaction details, and wallet permissions. These checks reduce avoidable mistakes but do not make a token safe or guarantee that a trade can be reversed.

  • Verify the contract address. Do not rely on a logo, ticker, or token name; lookalike tokens can use similar branding.
  • Inspect holder concentration and liquidity. A token with concentrated ownership or little liquidity may be difficult to sell at an expected price.
  • Review the transaction details. Confirm the token, amount, network, destination, and wallet approval before signing.
  • Check wallet permissions. Understand what a requested approval allows, and avoid signing transactions you cannot interpret.
  • Consider your recourse. The FSS warns that remedies may be limited after a DEX incident, while blockchain transactions can be difficult to reverse.

Self-custody, including use of a personal wallet, is optional; it is not required to buy or sell through an exchange. It also shifts responsibility to you for managing keys, backups, wallet permissions, and transfer details. A hardware wallet is one possible self-custody product, not a requirement or a guarantee against loss.

Tax: confirm the rules that apply to your circumstances

Tax treatment depends on facts including tax residence and transaction type. The National Tax Service (NTS) states that a tax-law amendment passed in December 2024 postponed virtual asset income taxation by two years. Its cited overview is specifically for non-residents and foreign corporations: it says certain income from transfers, lending, or withdrawals through Korean VASPs may be treated as Korean-source other income and describes withholding, while noting that treaty relief may be available through an application.

That overview is not a complete tax analysis for every Korean resident, foreign resident, or transaction. Do not infer from the postponement alone that every kind of crypto-related income is tax-free or that the same treatment applies to all taxpayers. Check current NTS guidance or consult a qualified tax professional with your residence, transaction history, and other relevant facts. Keep trade confirmations, transfer records, and account statements so you can answer questions about what you bought, sold, transferred, or received.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing by brand recognition alone: verify the exact entity and service on the current KoFIU list.
  • Assuming one exchange’s rules apply everywhere: eligibility, banking, fees, supported assets, and withdrawal controls must be checked with each provider.
  • Sending before checking the destination: confirm token, network, address, and any required identifying information before an on-chain transfer.
  • Believing a promotion or promised return: the FSC specifically warns about guaranteed or high returns, exclusive information, and “global listing” claims.
  • Assuming a small transfer is exempt from checks: domestic VASP-to-VASP travel-rule information requirements apply regardless of amount under the revised framework.
  • Treating a tax headline as personal tax advice: the NTS page cited here concerns non-residents and foreign corporations and does not settle every taxpayer’s position.
  • Assuming a wallet or DEX transaction can be undone: blockchain transfers may be difficult to reverse, and remedies after a DEX incident may be limited.
