That is the whole answer, and it is the opening advice of Felix Scholz’s humorous article for Time+Tide Watches, published 20 August 2016. The joke lands because the risk is real: a purchase you would normally question starts to look reasonable after a few drinks. The useful part is what you do before the first drink, and what to do if a watch has already arrived at your door.
Why a watch purchase and a night out is a money problem
Watches are an easy impulse buy. Prices range widely, product photos are persuasive, and a single checkout can move hundreds or thousands of dollars in a few seconds. Scholz’s article describes the core trap: a planned purchase can seem easier to justify after drinking, and the spending limit you set at home quietly stretches. For personal finance, the danger is not the watch itself. It is the decision being made by a version of you that is not weighing price, size, condition, or resale value carefully.
The fix is to move the decision out of the moment. Every step below is about making the choice while you are sober and the money is already allocated.
The three-step plan, applied to your money
Scholz organizes his advice into three steps: be prepared, know your limits, and anticipate regret. They translate well into a simple spending plan.

Step 1: Build a shortlist before you go out
The article jokes about asking boutique staff to refuse a sale unless the buyer can name Rolex model references. The real point underneath is sound: decide what you want in advance. For online shoppers, Scholz suggests adding watches you genuinely want to a watch list ahead of time, so that any purchase comes from that list rather than from browsing.

- A target price and a hard maximum price.
- Whether you would buy it new, pre-owned, or either.
- The one reason you want it, in a sentence you would still agree with the next morning.

Step 2: Set a spending limit that does not depend on how you feel

Set the rule in writing before you have a drink: “Nothing above my cap is bought within 24 hours, and nothing is bought after drinking.” A written rule is easier to keep than a resolution made at 11 p.m.
Step 3: Anticipate the regret before you buy
Scholz lists regrets a buyer might face: a watch that does not suit the wrist, or worry about condition and price. His joking conclusion is that a bad purchase might later become a story or be resold. Treat the resale idea with caution. Resale value is not guaranteed, and the price you paid is often not the price you can recover.

Before any purchase, check these points:
- Fit. Compare the case diameter and lug-to-lug measurement against your wrist, and ask whether the seller offers a sizing or return option.
- Condition and authenticity. For pre-owned pieces, confirm what the seller has inspected, what papers and box are included, and what warranty or authentication terms apply.
- Price evidence. Compare recent sold listings or several sellers rather than one asking price.
- Exit cost. Ask what you would lose if you sold it in a year, including fees and the time it takes.
If you already bought a watch while drunk
The article’s joke is that the purchase becomes a story. For your finances, it should become a deadline. Act within the return window, not after it.
- Find the order confirmation and read the seller’s return policy. Note the return window, who pays return shipping, and whether the watch must be in its original condition or packaging.
- Contact the seller in writing (email or the order page messaging) and state that you want to cancel or return. Keep a copy of the message.
- If the seller refuses, or the return window has closed, check your card issuer’s dispute process. Chargeback or dispute rights depend on your card and the reason for the dispute, and the timelines are set by the issuer, so read the terms in your cardholder agreement.
- Check whether any cooling-off right applies. Some jurisdictions give cancellation rights for certain purchases, such as those made away from a business’s premises or at a distance, but whether they apply depends on where you live and how you bought.
- Keep the box, papers, and any inspection report until the return or dispute is settled, and do not wear or modify the watch if you intend to send it back.
Once the situation is resolved, add the lesson to your plan: which control failed, and which rule you will tighten next time.
