How to Buy a Domain Name: Where to Buy One and What It Costs

Registering a domain is straightforward; choosing the right renewal price, privacy options and DNS setup takes more care. Here’s how to compare registrars, buy the name and keep control of it.

To buy a domain name, choose an available name and extension, register it through a domain registrar, enter accurate registrant details, pay the registration fee, and verify the confirmation email. Before checkout, compare the renewal price—not just the first-year promotion—and check privacy, DNS requirements, and add-ons. A domain is registered for a set term; you keep using it by renewing it.

What you are buying when you register a domain

A domain name, such as example.com, is a human-readable address. Its ending—such as .com, .org or .ai—is the top-level domain (TLD). The registrar is the company where you register and manage the name; the registry operator maintains the database for a particular TLD. ICANN explains the roles of registrars and registries.

  • DNS directs a domain to services such as a website or email provider.
  • Hosting is the server or platform that stores and delivers a website. It is separate from the domain, so you can register a domain without buying hosting.
  • Registrant is the person or organization associated with the registration.

“Buying” is common shorthand: you register the right to use a name for a defined term under an agreement with the registrar, rather than owning it permanently. The agreement sets terms for fees, renewals and transfers. Registering an available name is also different from buying a name already held by someone else; that is an aftermarket sale and may involve a broker or auction. Premium names may have a high initial charge, a higher recurring renewal fee, or both. Some TLDs impose eligibility requirements. ICANN’s registrant guidance describes the registrant’s relationship with the registrar.

How to choose a name and extension

Choose a name that is easy to say, spell and type. Avoid unnecessary hyphens, numbers and substitutions that require explanation. Think about whether the name will still suit the business if it expands, and check for trademark or brand-confusion risks before using it commercially. Matching social handles can help with consistent branding, but do not establish that a name is legally safe.

Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

A .com is familiar to many people, but it is not automatically right for every project. A local business may prefer a country-code TLD if it fits the audience and the registrant meets its rules. Compare the extension’s fit and recurring price, not only its launch discount.

Extension Typical fit What to check
.com General businesses, creators and commercial projects Familiar, but desirable names may be unavailable or premium-priced.
.org Organizations, communities, nonprofits and projects It signals an organizational identity.
.net Technology, networking or a fallback when a preferred name is taken Check that it suits the brand rather than choosing it by default.
Country-code TLDs Businesses or audiences tied to a country Residency, documentation or local-presence rules may apply.
.co Businesses and startups People may mistake it for .com; compare renewal prices.
.io Technology startups and software It can cost more than standard legacy extensions.
.ai AI-related projects It is often substantially more expensive and may require a minimum term.
New generic TLDs Niche branding A low first-year price can be followed by a much higher renewal.

If considering an expired or aftermarket domain, investigate its prior history as well as its price. A familiar-looking name can carry a past reputation or legal risk that makes it a poor choice.

Where to buy a domain

There is no universal best registrar. Compare the standard registration and renewal prices, privacy availability, DNS and nameserver flexibility, TLD rules, support and account security. The examples below are tied to official vendor pages reviewed on August 18, 2026; prices and offers can change.

  • Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)

Registrar Price and privacy signal Good fit Main trade-off
Cloudflare Registrar Advertises registration and renewal at cost, without registrar markup; exact prices vary by TLD. Free WHOIS redaction where permitted. People already using Cloudflare or prioritizing at-cost pricing and DNS integration. Registrar domains must use Cloudflare nameservers, and Registrar does not currently support internationalized domain names (IDNs). See Cloudflare’s registration requirements.
Porkbun Its page displayed .com at $11.08 for registration, renewal and transfer; free WHOIS privacy is available. Domain-only buyers who want public TLD pricing and a conventional registrar. Prices and rules differ by TLD; some country-code and newer TLDs have unusual transfer, renewal or eligibility rules. It does not offer Squarespace’s website-builder ecosystem.
Namecheap The page displayed a new-customer .com promotion of $6.79 for the first year versus a regular price of $14.98; privacy is included on eligible domains. People seeking an introductory offer and a broad domain-services catalog. The offer is for new customers and excludes premium domains. Check the renewal price before purchasing.
GoDaddy The page advertised .com at $4.99 for the first year for new customers, with checkout validation required; free privacy was advertised with the offer. People who want domains alongside auctions, hosting, email and other products. Check offer eligibility and renewal charges, and remove any add-ons you do not need.
Squarespace Domains Pricing varies by TLD and premium status. Eligible customers on annual website plans may receive one custom domain free for the first year. People building a Squarespace website who want site and domain management together. A free year depends on plan eligibility; it does not include website hosting. Check renewal pricing in the cart. Most Squarespace domains include Whois privacy, but rules vary by TLD.

For predictable pricing, compare Cloudflare’s at-cost offer with Porkbun’s published per-TLD prices; Cloudflare is unsuitable if you need another provider’s nameservers. For a Squarespace site, keeping the domain and site together may be convenient. Namecheap and GoDaddy promotions can reduce the first-year bill, but the regular renewal price is the more useful long-term comparison. No support provider can be called the best without comparing its channels, account-recovery process, documentation and any paid support requirements.

How much a domain really costs

A standard .com often falls in the low-teens per year at standard rates, but that is only a rough guide. TLD, registry pricing, registrar markup, promotion, customer eligibility, term, currency and taxes all affect the total. The official prices above were seen on August 18, 2026, and are not guaranteed future rates. The registrar agreement governs registration, transfer and renewal fees.

Compare the expected cost over the time you plan to keep the name:

Three-year cost = first-year registration + year-two renewal + year-three renewal + applicable taxes and mandatory fees

For example, a domain advertised at $4.99 for year one may cost considerably more at renewal. Compare the two-year or three-year total before deciding, and make sure the displayed renewal applies to your TLD and registration choice.

Check for premium, transfer and checkout charges

  • Premium name: Find out whether the quote is a one-time resale price, a registry premium registration price, a premium renewal, or a combination. Check for auction or broker fees and consider trademark risk.
  • Transfer: Many generic TLD transfers add a year, but it is not guaranteed. Cloudflare says most generic TLD transfers add a year, while .uk and .nz do not in its documented process. An added year may also be prevented by the maximum term, generally 10 years for ICANN-governed TLDs. See Cloudflare’s transfer FAQ.
  • Taxes and optional services: Checkout may add taxes, registry fees, minimum-term charges, marketplace fees, or optional hosting, email, privacy, DNS or security products. Squarespace notes that taxes and premium pricing can affect the cart total.

How to buy a domain name, step by step

  1. Define the use. Decide whether this is for a business, portfolio, blog, store or other project; identify the target country or audience; and note whether you need domain email, an existing DNS provider or long-term brand control.
  2. Compare registrars for the long term. Check standard and renewal prices, transfer terms, privacy, nameserver flexibility, TLD availability, support, account recovery, two-factor authentication, registrar lock, add-ons, taxes and currency. For a domain you expect to keep, do not choose on first-year price alone.
  3. Search the name and extension. Enter the name and choose a TLD. If unavailable, try a relevant short modifier, a different word order or another suitable extension. Do not assume the registrar’s suggested alternative is equally strong. If the name belongs to someone else, find out whether it is a resale, broker or auction listing. Availability can change between a search and checkout; Cloudflare says the definitive availability check happens when you select Purchase.
  4. Review the cart total. Confirm the spelling, TLD and number of years. Check the first-year and renewal prices, premium status, transfer or minimum-term charges, privacy fees, taxes, promotion eligibility and every bundled product. Remove hosting, email, security or other services you do not want.
  5. Create a secure account. Use a durable email account controlled by the intended registrant, a unique strong password and two-factor authentication or a passkey if available. Set a recovery method the business will retain; account access controls renewal, DNS changes, transfers and recovery.
  6. Enter accurate registrant details. Use the individual or legal entity that should control the registration, and keep its contact email current. Do not make a designer’s or temporary employee’s personal email the only contact. Cloudflare’s registration flow requests name, email, phone, address, city, state, country and postal code, and warns inaccurate information can lead to suspension or cancellation. For gTLDs, Squarespace says entering an organization can cause ICANN and registrars to treat that organization as legal owner over the individual name fields. Sources: Cloudflare registration steps and Squarespace registration guidance.
  7. Pay and confirm. Before submitting, confirm the exact name, TLD, intended registrant, term, renewal setting and final cart. A registration can still be pending or fail due to registry or payment checks.
  8. Verify the registration email. Follow the registrar’s confirmation link promptly. Squarespace says its link must be clicked within 15 days or the domain may be suspended; Cloudflare says an unverified registrant email can lead to a hold. If the message is missing, check spam and resend it from the account dashboard. Sources: Squarespace verification guidance and Cloudflare verification guidance.
  9. Connect the domain if needed. Use your website builder’s connection wizard or configure the required DNS records. Depending on the provider, this may mean changing nameservers or adding A, AAAA, CNAME, MX or TXT records. Email records may need separate setup, and DNS changes can take time to propagate. Cloudflare Registrar requires Cloudflare nameservers.
  10. Protect the registration. Enable auto-renewal if you want to keep the domain, turn on registrar lock and two-factor authentication, save recovery codes, note the expiration date, confirm privacy availability and retain invoices. For an organization, use a company-controlled account and document who has access; use a second authorized administrator where supported.

If your preferred domain is taken or marked premium

If the exact name is unavailable, first decide whether a different extension genuinely fits the audience. Another option is a short brand-relevant modifier or a different word order. A name that is merely available is not necessarily a good substitute if it is hard to say, spell or distinguish.

Sandisk 1TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 2000MB/s Transfer Speeds-New Model

  • IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
  • POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
  • SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
  • 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.

If an existing owner is selling the name, establish whether the transaction is through an aftermarket marketplace, auction or broker and account for any fees. For any premium listing, ask whether the amount is one-time or recurring, whether renewal also carries a premium, and whether the name transfers from an existing registrant or is sold at a registry premium rate. An available name can still create trademark or cybersquatting risk; check business-name and trademark conflicts before building a commercial brand around it, and seek legal advice for a consequential launch.

If a name appears available but fails at checkout, another buyer may have registered it, it may be reserved or restricted, or the price may reflect premium status. The final registry check, not the initial search result, determines whether registration can proceed.

What can go wrong after registration

Auto-renewal fails or the domain expires

Expiration can interrupt a website and email. A registrar may offer a grace period at its normal renewal price, followed by a redemption period with an added restoration fee; after that, the name may be deleted and available for someone else to register. The exact timeline and fees depend on the registrar and TLD. Keep payment details current, monitor renewal notices and renew before the last day rather than relying on a recovery period.

A transfer is blocked or does not add a year

A transfer may be restricted after a recent registration, transfer or change to registrant information; registrar lock, an incorrect authorization (EPP) code, an unpaid balance or a dispute can also stop it. Cloudflare documents a 60-day restriction after certain changes and says a previous registrar may take up to five days to release a transfer. A transfer may not add a year if the TLD does not provide one, the domain is already at its maximum term, it was renewed within the previous 45 days, or a registry rule applies. Check the current registrar’s rules before starting. Source: Cloudflare’s transfer FAQ.

Privacy protection is unavailable

Privacy redaction depends on the registrar, TLD and applicable rules. Some country-code TLDs restrict or prohibit Whois privacy; Squarespace documents these ccTLD limitations. Check privacy status before registration if exposing contact details is a concern.

The account or registrant is under someone else’s control

If a freelancer or employee registered the name in a personal account, the organization may lack access to renew, transfer or change DNS. Keep the registrar account, registrant email and recovery credentials under the intended owner’s control, and document who is authorized to manage them.
