To build a website with Shopify, create a store in Shopify admin, add products, choose and customize a theme, create pages and menus, connect a domain, configure payments and other business settings, then test the checkout before publishing. Shopify supplies a default theme and a myshopify.com address; you can customize the storefront and connect a custom domain. Selling through the standard Online Store channel requires a Basic plan or higher, and you must select a subscription plan before launch.

1. Create your Shopify account and enter business details

Start by creating a Shopify store and filling in the store and business information in Shopify admin. Shopify’s setup guidance calls for a store name, legal business name and address, time zone, default currency, default weight unit, and password-protection settings. Some details can be completed later, but accurate settings help you prepare transactions and fulfillment.

Keep your business address and store currency in mind as you configure payments, shipping, and taxes. Shopify’s settings support tax calculations, but they do not transfer responsibility for tax compliance from you to Shopify.

2. Add products and organize the catalog

In Shopify admin, open Products and add your first product. Give it a clear title and complete the relevant product details. Add the rest of your catalog as needed, then group related products into collections where that helps customers browse.

Your products and collections are managed in admin and presented through your storefront theme. Think through how shoppers will navigate the catalog before you build menus and page layouts.

3. Choose a theme and shape the storefront

Shopify assigns a default theme to a new store. Use the theme editor to adjust its layout, sections, colors, and fonts, and preview the result before making it the live storefront. You can add a free theme in admin or preview paid themes in the Shopify Theme Store. A paid theme must be purchased before you can publish it.

How to choose a theme

  • Catalog and products: Consider whether the theme suits the size of your catalog and the way your products need to be presented.
  • Layout and features: Compare the layouts and built-in features with the content and shopping experience you want.
  • Customization: Decide whether the theme editor gives you enough control or whether your requirements may need developer help.
  • Accessibility and mobile fit: Preview the storefront on different screen sizes and check that customers can navigate and read it comfortably.
  • Cost: Check whether the theme is free or paid, and remember that previewing a paid theme does not make it publishable without purchase.

For a typical store, the standard Online Store channel and theme editor are the practical starting point. If the storefront needs go beyond ready-made themes, consider Shopify developer tools or help from a Shopify developer or agency rather than forcing a theme to meet requirements it cannot handle.

4. Create pages and navigation customers can use

Add menus and links that help customers find products and essential information. Create useful store-information pages such as About, contact, FAQs, refund, shipping, and privacy pages as appropriate for your business. You can also add a blog if it serves your customers and content plans. Shopify recommends linking store policies from menus so customers can find them.

Check that menu links point to the intended pages and collections, and that the navigation remains clear on mobile as well as desktop.

5. Choose and connect your domain

Shopify gives each store a myshopify.com address. You can keep that address, buy a custom domain through Shopify or a third-party provider, or transfer an existing domain. If you use a custom domain, configure it as the primary customer-facing address.

When comparing domain options, consider whether you want to retain a domain you already own or buy a new one, who will manage renewals, and whether the selected address is set as primary. Domain policies and admin labels can change; check current Shopify guidance and your provider’s terms while setting it up.

6. Configure payments and business operations

Before launch, review your store address, currency, weight unit, payment method, shipping settings, inventory, and tax settings. These choices affect how customers pay and how orders are prepared and fulfilled. Shopify notes that its online store automatically uses Shopify settings for checkout and order fulfillment.

Tax requirements depend on your business and the places where you sell. Check your obligations rather than assuming that Shopify’s tax-calculation features file or remit taxes for you. Shopify’s launch checklist also notes that SPF and DKIM email sender authentication is required by major providers such as Gmail and Yahoo to help prevent messages from landing in spam.

7. Preview and test the store before launch

View the storefront as a customer would, then place at least one test order to review checkout and the order flow. Test after payment-setting changes as well. A test order can help you check order processing, inventory, shipping, and taxes before real customers use the store. Shopify says test orders do not incur charges.

  1. Preview the storefront and check product pages, collections, menus, and information pages.
  2. Place a test order and review the checkout experience and resulting order details.
  3. Check that inventory, shipping, and tax behavior match the settings you intended.
  4. If you used Shopify Payments test mode, turn it off before accepting real payments.

8. Meet the launch requirements and publish

Shopify’s launch instructions require you to select a subscription plan, add a store address in business settings, set up a payment method, and ensure test mode is deactivated. Selling through the standard Online Store channel requires a Basic plan or higher. Plan pricing and feature availability can change, so confirm current plan details in Shopify before choosing.

Once these requirements are met, remove password protection when you are ready for customers to visit and publish the storefront using Shopify’s current launch flow. Recheck the live site and customer-facing domain after publishing.

When the standard Shopify storefront is not enough

The normal Online Store channel with a theme is suited to a typical store. A custom storefront is an advanced route for requirements the standard channel and ready-made themes cannot meet. If you reach that point, assess developer tools or professional Shopify development help against the specific feature or experience you need.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
