Build a GST compliance calendar for the business’s actual jurisdiction, legal entities, registrations, taxpayer categories, return types, reporting periods, and payment methods—not for “GST” in the abstract. The exact dates belong to the applicable tax authority and, often, the business’s own account. Use the workflow and sample ownership model below to create a reliable calendar, then verify each live deadline in the relevant portal or current notice before filing.
Start by identifying the obligations that apply
“GST” can refer to different tax systems. A country-level summary may not match the filing frequency or deadline assigned to a particular account. Create a separate obligation entry for each legal entity and registration, and record:
- Country or jurisdiction, tax authority, legal entity, and registration or account identifier. Keep sensitive identifiers in an approved secure location.
- Applicable return type, taxpayer category, special scheme, reporting frequency, and period start and end.
- Filing deadline and payment deadline as separate fields, even if they usually fall on the same day.
- Payment method, such as an authority payment, bank transfer, or an approved direct-debit arrangement.
- Authority portal or source used to confirm the account’s assigned dates, plus the date you checked it.
For example, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) directs registrants to their account for due dates, and Singapore’s Inland Revenue Authority (IRAS) directs businesses to myTax Portal. The Indian GST portal’s GSTR-1 guidance covers that return specifically; it is not a complete calendar for every Indian taxpayer. CRA: File a GST/HST return; IRAS: Filing GST; Indian GST portal: Returns.
Turn statutory deadlines into an internal schedule
The authority’s due date is the legal deadline; the earlier milestones below are recommended business controls, not additional statutory dates. Set dates that leave time to investigate exceptions, correct a draft, obtain approval, submit successfully, and allow for payment processing.

- Set the source-data cutoff. Operations provides complete sales, purchase, inventory, import, project, or other relevant records by an agreed date.
- Close and reconcile. Finance checks source records against invoices and supporting documents, identifies missing or duplicate items, resolves coding and tax-treatment questions, and documents adjustments.
- Prepare the return. The finance preparer calculates the return and ties the draft to ledgers and source records.
- Review and approve. A separate reviewer checks material figures and open issues; an authorized approver signs off before filing.
- File and retain proof. The authorized filer submits the return and saves the filed copy and authority acknowledgement or receipt.
- Arrange and confirm payment. The payment owner obtains approval, releases funds in time for the applicable method, and records the payment reference and settlement evidence.
Do not assume filing and payment dates always coincide. For one Canadian GST/HST case—an individual with business income, annual reporting, and a December 31 fiscal year-end—the CRA gives an April 30 payment deadline and a June 15 filing deadline. Check the account and filer status rather than applying that exception broadly. CRA: When to file a GST/HST return.
Assign named owners across finance and operations
Assign people, not just departments. A small business may have one person covering multiple roles, but the calendar should still name a preparer, reviewer or approver, filer, payment owner, operations data owners, and backup. Where staffing allows, separate preparation from review.

Canada: GST/HST
CRA guidance says a registrant must file a return for every reporting period, including a period with no business transactions or no net tax owing. Monthly and quarterly filers generally file and pay one month after the period ends. Most annual filers file and pay within three months after fiscal year-end. The annual-filer exception described above applies to a specific individual filer and separates payment from filing. CRA also says a deadline falling on a Saturday, Sunday, or recognized public holiday is met when the return or payment is received on the next business day. Some annual filers may have quarterly instalments, so confirm the account’s assigned obligations. CRA: When to file a GST/HST return; CRA: File a GST/HST return.
Singapore: GST
IRAS says GST returns and payments are generally due one month after the accounting period, including a nil return when there was no business activity. Its calendar-quarter examples map March 31 to April 30, June 30 to July 31, September 30 to October 31, and December 31 to January 31. For businesses using a GIRO payment arrangement, IRAS gives a deduction date on the 15th day of the month after the payment due date. Confirm the business’s assigned dates in myTax Portal. IRAS: Filing GST.

India: selected GSTR-1 dates
The Indian GST portal’s GSTR-1 guide states the 11th day of the succeeding month for monthly filers and the 13th day of the month after the quarter for quarterly filers, subject to government extensions. It also describes a November 30 following the financial year as a cutoff for the prior-year amendment situation addressed on that page. These are GSTR-1-specific details, not dates for every Indian return or taxpayer category. Check current notifications and the obligations that apply to the business. The CGST Act distinguishes obligations for categories including monthly, quarterly, TDS, input service distributor, and non-resident taxpayers. Indian GST portal: Returns; India Code: Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017.
Build in reminders, backups, and recovery steps
A calendar is useful only if someone maintains it and exceptions have an owner. Designate a calendar owner to check for new registrations, changes in filing frequency, account updates, extensions, and regulator notices. Record when and where each date was checked, and set a reminder sequence that gives owners time to act rather than merely notifying them on the due date.
- Late source data: alert the named operations owner and finance lead before the internal cutoff; record the missing item and its expected resolution.
- Staff absence: name a backup for data delivery, review, filing, and payment release, with access arranged through approved systems.
- Rejected or failed submission: monitor for an acknowledgement, assign someone to investigate the rejection, correct the issue, and retain both the error and successful receipt.
- Payment risk: escalate cash constraints before the payment release date and document the authorized decision and eventual settlement.
- Outage or changed deadline: check the authority’s current notices or account, follow its instructions, and update the calendar with the source and verification date.
After each reporting period, review missed handoffs and near misses, then adjust the internal milestones or ownership where necessary. Do not treat an internal reminder or a past due date as proof that the authority’s current deadline remains unchanged.
