How to Build a Diversified Portfolio Around AI Stocks

A practical process for building an AI-stock portfolio around your goals: map exposure across all holdings, test real diversification, compare fund documents, and rebalance with a plan.

Build an AI-stock portfolio by deciding what the money is for, how much volatility you can tolerate, and how much exposure you already have across all your accounts and funds. Then choose investments that fit that plan, check whether their underlying holdings actually differ, and set a rule for reviewing and rebalancing the portfolio. There is no universal percentage of a portfolio that belongs in AI stocks: the right allocation depends on an investor’s circumstances and goals.

This is general education, not individualized investment advice. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) says asset allocation depends on your investment timeframe and risk tolerance. Its guidance also warns that a fund with many holdings—or a new fund ticker—does not necessarily add meaningful diversification.

Start with the job your portfolio needs to do

Before choosing an AI stock, ETF, or target allocation, define the purpose of the money. A portfolio intended to support a near-term expense has a different job from one intended for a goal decades away. The SEC explains that a longer investment horizon may allow an investor to accept more volatility, while a shorter horizon may call for less-risky investments. That is a framework for thinking, not a rule that determines the right mix for every person. Investor.gov’s asset-allocation guidance describes the relationship between goals, timeframe, and risk tolerance.

Write down three things before deciding how much AI exposure to hold:

  • Timeframe: When might you need to use the money? A date that is approaching leaves less time to recover from a downturn than a distant goal does.
  • Risk tolerance: How much fluctuation, including a substantial decline, could you withstand without abandoning the plan or jeopardizing the goal?

Then decide what role AI-related investments would play. Are you seeking broad participation in businesses you believe may benefit from AI, or are you making a more focused investment in a particular industry or theme? The answer matters because a focused theme can concentrate risk rather than spread it. Do not start with a percentage found in an article or a fund’s marketing material; the available evidence does not establish a universal AI allocation.

Map your AI exposure across the whole portfolio

AI exposure is not limited to stocks whose names or business descriptions prominently mention artificial intelligence. It may appear in individual securities and inside broad-market, growth, technology, semiconductor, or AI-themed funds. A portfolio review should therefore look through fund holdings, not merely count account positions or fund names. SEC guidance recommends examining overlapping holdings among funds; its ETF guidance also explains that an ETF’s structure and holdings matter when assessing its risks and diversification. See Investor.gov’s ETF information.

Make a complete inventory

  1. Gather every account statement. Include taxable investment accounts and retirement accounts you manage. If you are evaluating a household portfolio, include the accounts relevant to that decision rather than looking at one account in isolation.
  2. List individual securities. Record stocks and other investments you hold directly, along with the number of shares or current value if you use those figures in your own allocation calculation.
  3. List every fund. Include broad-market, growth, technology, semiconductor, and AI-themed mutual funds and ETFs. A fund with a broad label can still contain companies that contribute to the same exposures as a narrower fund.
  4. Look up the underlying holdings. Use each fund’s current holdings disclosure and prospectus. Record the date of the information: holdings can change, and a document’s snapshot is not a promise about future composition.
  5. Mark overlapping companies and themes. Note repeated holdings, as well as repeated exposure to an industry or sector. A fund name is not a substitute for this check.

Use current fund documents for the review. The SEC’s ETF guidance and its discussion of asset allocation and diversification are useful starting points for understanding why fund holdings and portfolio context matter.

Count economic exposures, not just tickers

Suppose an investor owns a broad-market fund, a technology fund, and an AI-themed fund. Those are three fund positions, but that fact alone does not establish that the portfolio has three distinct sources of risk. If the funds hold some of the same companies or cluster in the same industry or sector, their returns may be influenced by overlapping factors. Conversely, a broad fund may add exposures that a narrow fund does not. The point of the inventory is to establish what is actually owned, not to assume that every fund is either fully redundant or fully independent.

This distinction also helps prevent a common counting error: treating each holding as a separate diversification benefit. A portfolio can contain many tickers and still depend heavily on a small group of companies, one industry, or one investment theme. Diversification is about the underlying exposures and how they fit together, not the visual length of a brokerage screen.

Check whether holdings diversify one another

After mapping holdings, ask whether each position adds a meaningfully different exposure or mainly increases an exposure you already have. Compare holdings at two levels: the companies or securities inside each investment, and the industries or sectors represented by those companies. Then consider how the investment’s design selects and weights its holdings.

The SEC puts the central caution plainly: “But a mutual fund or ETF won’t necessarily provide diversification, especially if it is narrowly focused (such as on one industry sector).” This statement appears in the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov page, “Asset Allocation and Diversification.” Owning a fund is not the same as owning a diversified portfolio; the fund’s focus and its place alongside your other holdings matter.

Questions to ask about each position

  • What does it own? Read the holdings list rather than inferring the contents from the fund’s name or objective.
  • Where does it concentrate? Check for industry or sector concentration, including concentration that may be less obvious from the label.
  • How are holdings selected? Review whether the investment tracks an index and how that index is constructed, or whether it follows an active mandate. A non-traditional index strategy may use screens or weighting rules that differ from a broad market benchmark.
  • What does it cost? Review the fund’s fees and other costs in its current documents. A low-cost label or familiar structure does not answer whether the exposure is appropriate.
  • Can you trade it when needed? Consider the investment’s liquidity in relation to your needs and timeframe. SEC materials identify liquidity as one of the product characteristics investors should consider.
  • What risks does the document disclose? Read the prospectus risk section rather than assuming that several holdings eliminate the risks of a concentrated strategy.

The SEC’s overview of investment products emphasizes that products differ in their features and that risk, fees, diversification, and liquidity are relevant considerations. Its bulletin on smart beta, quantitative funds, and other non-traditional index funds is also relevant when an index uses a strategy that departs from a conventional broad-market approach.

Compare the available approaches on the same criteria

Individual stocks, diversified funds, and thematic funds are different routes to exposure, not interchangeable guarantees of diversification. The table below is a due-diligence framework, not a ranking or a claim that one route is best. The SEC materials describe the factors to examine; they do not establish that a particular product’s holdings, fees, liquidity, or strategy will suit a specific investor. Check the current security or fund documents before investing.

Route Holdings and overlap Concentration and strategy Costs, liquidity, and documents
Individual stocks Review each company directly and compare it with your existing direct holdings and fund holdings. A stock position can overlap with funds you already own. Assess the company-specific exposure as well as its industry and sector. The number of individual stocks alone does not establish diversification. Stock-specific fees, liquidity, and other costs are not stated in the SEC materials cited here; check the applicable trading terms and available company information.
Broad or diversified funds Inspect the underlying holdings and compare them with all other funds and direct investments in the portfolio. Read the fund’s objective and construction method; the label “broad” does not replace a review of actual holdings and concentration. Fees, liquidity, and other costs vary by product and are not stated as a single value in the SEC materials cited here. Review the current prospectus and disclosures.
Thematic funds Review the holdings for overlap with broad, growth, technology, semiconductor, and other thematic investments. A narrow theme may concentrate the portfolio in particular industries or sectors. Review the index methodology or active mandate and stated risks. Fees, liquidity, and other costs depend on the specific fund and are not stated as universal values in the SEC materials cited here. Consult current fund documents.

For an investor who wants a thematic exposure, a thematic fund may be considered as a limited part of a broader plan, but the available sources do not support a target size. Its appropriateness depends on the investor’s goal, timeframe, risk tolerance, and existing exposures. Do not treat a multi-company fund as a core diversified holding solely because it holds more than one security.

Use fund documents to understand what an AI label means

A dated prospectus example shows why an investor should look beyond a theme name. The 2026 summary prospectus for the Global X Artificial Intelligence & Technology ETF says the fund seeks to track the Indxx Artificial Intelligence & Big Data Index before fees and expenses. It also states that, as of January 31, 2026, the underlying index was concentrated in the semiconductors and semiconductor equipment industry and had significant exposure to the information technology sector. The details are in the summary prospectus filed with the SEC.

This is a specific index snapshot as of a stated date, not a live holdings report, a forecast, or a description of every AI fund. It does not establish how the ETF is composed today or how it will perform. An investor evaluating that or another fund should consult its current holdings and prospectus, including its objective, index methodology, concentration, fees, and disclosed risks. A product name tells you the subject the fund intends to address; it does not tell you how diversified it is.

Build a portfolio rule instead of copying a percentage

Once you understand the goal and current exposures, decide what role AI-related investments would have in the overall asset allocation. The SEC’s guidance makes allocation personal to timeframe and risk tolerance, and the cited sources do not identify an optimal AI-stock percentage. The practical task is to make a reasoned choice within your own plan, not to search for a number that can be applied to every investor.

  1. Set the broader allocation first. Decide how the portfolio should serve its goal, taking account of the time horizon and the volatility you can tolerate. Do not let a single theme determine the whole allocation.
  2. Choose the role of AI exposure. Decide whether AI-related holdings are intended to complement other investments or represent a focused theme. Be explicit about whether the exposure is direct, fund-based, or both.
  3. Check the proposed mix against the inventory. Include exposure already embedded in broad, growth, technology, semiconductor, and thematic funds. A new purchase adds to existing exposure even if the new security has a different ticker.
  4. Read the product documents. Compare holdings, concentration, construction method, fees, liquidity, and stated risks on the same basis for each option under consideration.
  5. Write down a review rule. Choose when you will check the portfolio and what kind of departure from your intended allocation would prompt a review. A written rule can make a later decision more consistent with the original plan.

Keep the distinction between an investment thesis and a portfolio role clear. Believing a technology may matter does not by itself answer how much risk to take, which product to use, or whether a new position adds diversification. Those decisions depend on the whole portfolio and the goal it is meant to serve.

Set a review and rebalancing process

Over time, investments perform differently, so the portfolio’s mix can move away from the allocation you chose. Rebalancing is the process of bringing holdings back toward that intended mix. The SEC describes two broad ways to set a review rule: review at intervals, or act when holdings cross a threshold you set in advance. Its asset-allocation guidance also discusses selling overweight investments, buying underweights, or directing new contributions to underweight categories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a rule you can follow

  • Calendar review: Pick a recurring interval for checking whether the portfolio still matches the plan. A review date is a prompt to assess the allocation; it does not automatically require a trade.
  • Threshold review: Decide in advance what deviation from the intended mix would trigger a closer look. Set the threshold as part of your plan rather than changing it impulsively in response to market headlines.
  • Contribution-based adjustment: Where appropriate, direct new contributions toward underweight categories. This may help move the mix toward its target without selling an overweight holding.
  • Trade-based adjustment: Selling overweights or buying underweights are other methods described by the SEC. Consider transaction fees and tax consequences before making changes.

No one method is guaranteed to produce better returns. Rebalancing is meant to maintain the risk level and allocation you selected; it is not a way to predict which investment will outperform. Before trading, review the account type, applicable transaction costs, and potential tax effects. If the implications are unclear or significant, consider consulting a qualified financial or tax professional in your jurisdiction.

What to do when the review finds drift

  1. Compare the current mix with the allocation you intended, using the same categories and basis you used to set the plan.
  2. Check whether the difference reflects a temporary movement or a change in your goal, timeframe, or tolerance for volatility. Do not revise the plan merely because a theme has recently attracted attention.
  3. Consider whether contributions can address underweights before selling positions. If trades are necessary, evaluate costs and taxes first.
  4. Record what you changed and why. Keep the reason tied to the allocation rule, not an unsupported expectation about future AI-stock performance.

Common mistakes that undermine diversification

  • Choosing an AI percentage first. An allocation detached from the investor’s goal, timeframe, and risk tolerance is not a portfolio plan. The SEC does not prescribe one universal percentage for AI stocks.
  • Counting tickers instead of exposures. Several funds can hold overlapping companies or concentrate in the same sector. Review the underlying holdings across the portfolio.
  • Assuming a thematic fund is broad because it owns multiple companies. A narrow industry or theme can still leave a fund concentrated. Check holdings, index construction or active mandate, and risk disclosures.
  • Using a dated snapshot as a current holdings list. The January 31, 2026 index description in the cited prospectus is a dated example. Verify a fund’s current information before relying on it.
  • Ignoring fees, liquidity, or taxes. These factors can affect the choice of product and the cost of rebalancing. Review current disclosures and account-specific consequences rather than assuming they are immaterial.
  • Changing the plan in response to a performance story. The cited sources do not establish that AI stocks, semiconductors, or a named fund will outperform. Base allocation and rebalancing decisions on the portfolio’s purpose and written rules.

A portfolio review is complete only when you can describe the exposure you actually own, how it fits the goal, and what would cause you to revisit it. If you cannot establish a fund’s holdings or understand its stated strategy and risks from the available documents, do not assume its label answers those questions.
