To move a token from an Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) to Ethereum mainnet, start a withdrawal through a bridge that supports the network and token. Connect your wallet, select the L2 as the source and Ethereum mainnet as the destination, review the recipient, amount and live fees, then confirm the transaction. Depending on the network and route, you may need to wait and complete a separate proof or claim before the funds are usable on mainnet.
What an L2-to-mainnet bridge withdrawal does
This transfer is an L2-to-L1 withdrawal: your assets move from an Ethereum scaling network back to Ethereum mainnet. The process is not identical across networks. Supported tokens, transaction costs, settlement time and finalization steps depend on the network and bridge you choose.
Use the selected network’s official bridge or another route only after checking its supported token and its trust and custody assumptions. A bridge is not risk-free simply because it uses smart contracts or is described as trust-minimized. Ethereum.org explains that some bridge models rely on an operator or system, while trust-minimized designs rely on smart contracts and algorithms: Ethereum.org’s bridge guide.
Steps to withdraw from an L2 to Ethereum mainnet
- Identify the network and token. Confirm which L2 currently holds the funds and select the exact token entry supported by the bridge. If you have doubts about a token, verify its contract or official token listing rather than relying on its name alone.
- Open the bridge and set the route. Connect your wallet, select the L2 as the source network and Ethereum mainnet as the destination. Check that the bridge supports the route and intended recipient.
- Enter the amount and review the quote. Check the token, recipient address, estimated amount received and live fees before proceeding. Ethereum.org’s guide recommends reviewing the amount received and fees as part of the bridge flow: bridge guidance. Fees and estimates can change; use the current quote rather than a fixed figure.
- Keep enough gas on the L2. You need the source network’s gas asset to submit the withdrawal. For Arbitrum, the official quickstart says to have enough ETH for transaction costs; without sufficient ETH, a wallet confirmation prompt may not appear: Arbitrum bridge quickstart.
- Confirm the transaction in your wallet. Read the wallet’s details and confirm only if they match the route and amount you intend. Never share your seed phrase or approve an unexplained wallet request.
- Monitor the withdrawal and complete any required finalization. Follow the bridge’s status and instructions. Some networks require a waiting period, an L1 proof, or a later claim before the withdrawal is complete.
- Verify receipt on mainnet. Once the bridge marks the withdrawal complete, switch your wallet to Ethereum mainnet and confirm the token balance there.
How long the withdrawal takes depends on the network
There is no universal L2 withdrawal time. These examples describe the named networks and their documented processes; they are not promises for every bridge or route.

| Network or route | Documented timing and completion |
|---|---|
| Arbitrum One and Arbitrum Nova official bridge | Withdrawals to Ethereum take at least seven days. The official guide describes a 7–8 day countdown followed by a claim action: Arbitrum bridge quickstart. |
| OP Stack optimistic rollup withdrawal flow | The OP Stack specification describes initiating a withdrawal on L2, proving it on L1, then finalizing it after a seven-day challenge period: OP Stack withdrawal specification. |
| ZKsync | ZKsync documentation describes a three-hour delay before an L1 finalization step that proves inclusion of the L2-to-L1 message: ZKsync bridging documentation. |
Why Arbitrum withdrawals have a waiting period
The Arbitrum Foundation says the seven-day wait on withdrawals through its official bridge provides time for verifiers to submit a fraud proof against a fraudulent transaction. The Foundation’s support page states: “Whenever there are bridge transactions into the Ethereum mainnet using the official Arbitrum bridge, there is a mandatory 7-day waiting period for withdrawals and this is due to the bridge’s security measures.” This explanation applies to the official Arbitrum bridge, not every L2: Arbitrum Foundation support.
Canonical withdrawal or faster liquidity route?
A canonical withdrawal follows the network’s standard process, including its proof, challenge or waiting period where applicable. A liquidity provider may offer a different route: Ethereum.org describes providers paying a user on L1 for a fee while taking over ownership of a pending withdrawal: Ethereum.org bridge guide. This can make funds available sooner, but it is a separate arrangement, not an acceleration guaranteed by the L2 protocol.

Before choosing a faster route, compare the live fee and output with the time saved. Check which network and token are supported, who pays the mainnet funds, what assumptions you rely on, and whether you still have a later claim or finalization step. Do not treat a faster route as risk-free or assume a particular provider is available for your transfer.

- The source is the L2 that holds your assets; the destination is Ethereum mainnet.
- The bridge supports the exact token and route, and the recipient address is correct.
- The wallet shows a transaction you understand, and you have enough source-network gas to submit it.
- The displayed output and fees are acceptable, and you understand when the funds will become usable.
- You know how to track the transaction and whether the bridge requires a later proof, finalization or claim.
Ethereum.org also answers the common question, “Can I go back to Ethereum mainnet after I bridge my tokens to L2?” Yes: the same bridge can be used to return to mainnet, subject to that bridge’s supported networks, tokens and withdrawal process: Ethereum.org bridge guidance.
