The main options NYRA lists are NYRA Bets, a live teller, or a self-service terminal at the track. Remember that horse-racing odds are pari-mutuel: displayed odds can change, and your payout is based on the final odds when wagering closes—not necessarily the odds you saw when you placed your bet.
Choose where to place your wager
NYRA lists three ways to bet: the NYRA Bets app, a live teller, or a self-service terminal. NYRA identifies NYRA Bets as the official betting app for the Belmont Stakes. Online wagering eligibility and availability depend on your location and applicable rules; check the app and current NYRA information before relying on it.
At a live teller
Tell the clerk the track, race number, amount, wager type, and horse number or numbers. NYRA’s example is: “10th race, $10 to Win on 5.” Check the printed ticket before leaving the window; it records the wager you are asking the teller to place.
At a self-service terminal
NYRA says terminal users need a betting voucher, and terminals also accept winning tickets. Follow the terminal prompts to select the race and wager, then review the ticket before confirming.

Online
Use the NYRA Bets app if it is available and permitted where you are. Confirm the date, race, selections, wager amount, and accepted ticket in the app; do not assume that a bet is placed merely because you selected horses.
Pick a wager by the outcome you need
Start with the finish condition, not the odds. These wager definitions are from NYRA’s wagering information.
Rank #2
| Wager | What you must predict |
|---|---|
| Win | Your selected horse finishes first. |
| Place | Your selected horse finishes first or second. |
| Show | Your selected horse finishes first, second, or third. |
| Across the board | Equal win, place, and show wagers on one horse. |
| Exacta | The first two finishers in the correct order. |
| Quinella | The first two finishers in either order. |
| Trifecta | The first three finishers in the correct order. |
| Superfecta | The first four finishers in the correct order. |
| Daily Double | The winners of two consecutive races. |
| Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5, or Pick 6 | The winners of three, four, five, or six consecutive races, respectively. |
Understand ticket cost and coverage
A straightforward win, place, or show ticket names one horse and one outcome. Exacta, trifecta, and superfecta tickets can be boxed, which means your selections may finish in any order and still satisfy the combination. A box covers more possible finishing orders, so it costs more than selecting one exact order. Adding horses to a combination also expands the number of outcomes covered and raises the ticket price. Check the wager’s minimum and the terminal or teller’s displayed total before confirming.
NYRA’s Belmont guide says basic bets can be made for as little as $1 per race, but minimums vary by wager. Treat that as a guide statement, not a promise that every wager type has a $1 minimum; check the current menu for the specific race and bet.

How odds and payouts work
In pari-mutuel wagering, bets go into shared pools. NYRA says the track deducts a percentage for purses, expenses, and state taxes, and the remaining pool is distributed among winning tickets under the applicable rules. Odds reflect the money wagered and can move as more bets enter the pool.
The odds shown when you place a bet are not a guaranteed payout. NYRA’s wagering FAQ says payouts use the final odds when wagering closes. A horse’s morning-line odds are an opening estimate, not fixed odds; NYRA’s Belmont guide explicitly warns that they are not guaranteed. Check the live odds and race changes near post time, while understanding that the final price may still differ from the number you saw earlier.

Check the current race details before betting
The 2026 Belmont Stakes was scheduled for Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Saratoga Race Course at 1 1/4 miles, with a listed post time of 7:04 p.m. Eastern. Those are historical details, not the next running’s schedule: the 2026 race has passed. NYRA’s 2026 post-times and wager menu cautioned that times and details may change. The venue, date, distance, field, post time, wagering menu, and applicable rules for a future edition should be checked against current NYRA announcements.
The Belmont Stakes is the third and final leg of the Triple Crown, according to NYRA’s 2026 media guide. That does not mean a future running will use the same venue or schedule as 2026.

What happens if a horse scratches or a race changes?
Scratch treatment depends on the wager and timing. NYRA’s wagering FAQ says late scratches in win, place, show, exacta, quinella, trifecta, and superfecta wagers receive refunds. For some multi-race wagers, a scratch may instead trigger a post-time favorite or a consolation treatment, depending on the wager and when the scratch occurs. Cancelled legs and races moved off turf can also have wager-specific rules. Check the current rules for the exact ticket you hold; do not assume every scratch means the same outcome.
A simple way to place a first bet
- Check the current NYRA race card, scratches, post time, and wager menu.
- Choose one wager and understand exactly what finish would make it a winner.
- Set an amount you are comfortable losing, then confirm the minimum for that wager.
- Place the bet through NYRA Bets, a teller, or a terminal, entering the race and selection carefully.
- Verify the ticket or app confirmation and keep it until the race and any payout are settled.
NYRA’s wagering information says, “There is no right or wrong way to pick a horse.” A wager is still a risk: you can lose the amount staked, and no selection or odds display guarantees a return.
