To become an Amazon affiliate, publish useful original content on a public website or eligible social account, apply to Amazon Associates with every property where you plan to use affiliate links, and—if Amazon accepts the application for review—refer at least three qualifying sales within the first 180 days. Those sales trigger a review; they do not guarantee approval. Your best preparation is content that helps shoppers make decisions, clear disclosures, and careful compliance with the rules for your Amazon marketplace.

What you need before applying

Amazon Associates is a referral program for publishers. Amazon says eligible publishing properties can include websites, social-media user-generated content, online software applications, and Alexa skills. You identify the properties you will use in your application and, if approved, use tagged Special Links to refer customers to relevant Amazon pages. Requirements and terms can vary by marketplace, so check the agreement and policies for the country in which you intend to participate.

  • A public property: Your site or account should be accessible to Amazon reviewers and customers.
  • Original, useful material: Build a real reason for people to visit beyond clicking a product link.
  • An established audience: For social accounts, Amazon says 500 organic followers or likes is typical in most cases; this is guidance, not a guarantee of acceptance.
  • A plan to attract eligible shoppers: You must be able to refer at least three qualifying sales within the initial 180-day period.
  • Compliance readiness: Be prepared to identify affiliate links clearly and follow Amazon’s link-placement and content rules.

Amazon’s application review guidance says websites should generally have recent content, usually published within the last 60 days. It offers at least 10 posts as a rule of thumb for robust original content—not a formal minimum that guarantees approval. For social networks, Amazon currently names Facebook open groups or fan pages (not personal pages), Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, TikTok, and Twitch.tv. Amazon evaluates the actual property and its value to customers, not just its post count or follower total. Amazon’s application review guidance

How to apply and pass the review

  1. Choose your Amazon marketplace. Start with the country where your audience shops most. Read that marketplace’s current Operating Agreement, participation requirements, policies, and commission income statement; do not assume the terms are identical across countries. 2. Prepare the property you will list. Make it public, fill out its core pages, and publish substantial original material. Include only websites, social accounts, apps, or other properties you actually intend to use for Associates links.
  3. Submit the application and identify your properties accurately. Amazon requires complete application information and the sites where you will use tagged Special Links. Amazon Associates Operating Agreement
  4. Use links only as permitted while you build qualifying referrals. Amazon reviews an application after it has referred at least three qualifying sales in the first 180 days. Purchases you make yourself do not count. Treat the threshold as a review gate, not proof of approval. Amazon’s application review guidance
  5. Wait for Amazon’s assessment of the listed properties. Amazon checks whether the content meets its standards and provides customer value. The review guidance warns that applications can be rejected and may not be reassessed after rejection, so make the property compliant and useful before applying rather than relying on a later opportunity to fix it.

Amazon’s announced policy changes effective April 14, 2026 also specify that, for a purchase to qualify under the updated language, the product must be shipped, streamed or downloaded, and paid for within 180 days. What counts as useful original content

Amazon says it looks for a beneficial reason for customers to visit a property, such as insight about a subject or product that is not readily available elsewhere. In its policy language, material based on third-party content must add value through significant commentary, analysis, or transformation; Amazon’s changes effective April 14, 2026 further describe original content in those terms. For a personal-finance publisher, that could mean explaining how a product fits a defined budgeting or home-office need, comparing relevant features, or showing how to evaluate total cost. Be specific about what you know and how you know it. Do not claim that you tested an item, used it personally, or verified a financial benefit unless you actually did. A page should remain informative if its affiliate links are removed; a collection of links with little independent help gives shoppers little reason to trust it.

Disclosures and link rules

Amazon requires Associates to identify their relationship using this exact statement on their site: “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.” Amazon also says disclosures near affiliate links or product reviews should be clear and conspicuous; its examples include “(paid link),” “#ad,” and “#CommissionsEarned.” Put the disclosure where readers can see it before or alongside the recommendation, not in a place they are unlikely to notice. Check applicable advertising laws and platform rules as well. Amazon’s statement identifies your participation; it does not mean Amazon endorses you. Use tagged Special Links and Program Content only as the agreement permits. Amazon’s participation requirements restrict use of Special Links on properties that are not listed as yours, limit offline promotion, and require links to point to a relevant Amazon product or other relevant page. Because Amazon can change its agreement and policies, review the current marketplace terms before you publish or revise links. How Amazon affiliate earnings work

There is no universal commission rate or reliable earnings figure to plan around: rates vary by product category and marketplace, and Amazon does not guarantee traffic or commission income. Check the current Commission Income Statement for the marketplace and categories relevant to your content rather than relying on a rate quoted elsewhere. Amazon says payment is made approximately 60 days after the end of the month in which commissions were earned; that is a payment schedule, not a promise of a particular amount. Common mistakes that can derail an application

  • Applying with a thin or private property: Reviewers need access to the property and enough original material to assess its value.
  • Treating the 500-follower or 10-post guidance as automatic approval criteria: Amazon calls these typical guidance or a rule of thumb; it still assesses content and customer value.
  • Counting personal orders toward the three-sale threshold: Amazon says they do not count.
  • Using links on unlisted accounts or in disallowed offline promotions: Keep link use within the properties and methods permitted by the current participation requirements.
  • Hiding disclosures or implying endorsement: Make your relationship clear near recommendations and do not suggest Amazon approves your opinions.
  • Promising income or easy passive returns: Neither acceptance nor earnings are guaranteed, and commission rates and eligibility can change.
