To become a political analyst, build a foundation in political science, public policy, public administration, international relations or a related field; develop strong research, data-analysis and communication skills; and gain practical experience through internships, campaigns, government or research projects. A master’s degree is typical for the closely related U.S. occupation of political scientist, but there is no single credential rule for every job titled “political analyst.”

What political analysts do

Political analysts examine political subjects and use evidence to explain developments, assess policy or forecast possible trends. The work may include collecting public-opinion and other data, testing ideas, evaluating the effects of laws and policies, monitoring political events, and presenting findings in reports or briefings. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) summarizes the work of political scientists as researching “policies, trends, and issues.”

The title is used across different kinds of work. An analyst might focus on domestic politics, international affairs, campaigns, public opinion or policy. Some roles are primarily research-oriented; others produce briefings or assessments for decision-makers. For example, a federal Political Analyst vacancy describes written and oral assessments of foreign governments and entities for policymakers. That is one employer’s role, not a universal job description.

Steps to enter the field

  1. Choose a relevant area of study. Political science, public policy, public administration and international relations are common foundations. Economics, psychology or another related discipline can also be relevant, depending on the role and its subject matter.
  2. Build research and methods skills. Learn to assess sources, frame research questions, work with qualitative evidence and quantitative data, and understand statistics and survey methods. Relevant graduate coursework may include government, policy, politics, economics, psychology, research methods and statistics.
  3. Practice communicating analysis. Develop concise writing and presentation skills. Analysts often need to explain what the evidence shows, what it does not show and why a conclusion matters to an audience without a technical background.
  4. Get practical experience. Seek internships, research projects, campaign or government work, or volunteer opportunities that let you investigate political questions and communicate findings. Some employers consider bachelor’s degree holders for certain entry-level roles, including positions in campaigns or government.
  5. Target openings by the work, not just the title. Compare the specialization, employer, methods, degree expectations and actual deliverables in each vacancy. Related titles can include government affairs specialist, political consultant and political research scientist, but their duties may differ.

Education and credentials

For the BLS occupation of political scientist, a master’s degree in political science, public administration or a related field is typical. The BLS also notes that some employers prefer a Ph.D. and that some entry-level positions may be open to people with a bachelor’s degree. These are occupational guidelines, not legal requirements for every job using the title political analyst.

Before committing to graduate study, check the education requirements in vacancies for the specialty and employers you want to pursue. Compare programs by relevant coursework, research-methods training and fit with your intended work. The available occupational sources do not establish a universal certification requirement for political analysts.

Skills that strengthen an application

Political analysis calls for more than knowledge of government. The BLS identifies adaptability, communication, creativity, critical thinking, decision-making, attention to detail and interpersonal skills as important qualities. O*NET also provides an occupational skills profile for political scientists.

  • Evidence judgment: distinguish reliable information from weak or incomplete sources, and separate facts from interpretation.
  • Research methods: work with both qualitative and quantitative material and choose methods appropriate to the question.
  • Clear communication: write reports and briefings that make findings and uncertainty understandable.
  • Political and policy context: connect events, institutions, laws and policy choices to the question being analyzed.
  • Adaptability and care: respond to changing events while checking details and avoiding conclusions that the evidence cannot support.

Where political analysts work

Possible settings include government, political organizations, research and policy institutes, advocacy organizations, consulting and education. In the BLS political-scientist occupational category, federal government was the largest listed employer group in 2025, at 68%. Professional, scientific and technical services accounted for 11%; educational services, 8%; and civic, grantmaking, religious, professional and similar organizations, 3%. These shares describe that BLS category in 2025, not all workers whose job title includes “analyst.”

Political analyst salary and job outlook in the U.S.

There is no single salary figure established for every job titled political analyst. The closest consistent U.S. comparison in the available official data is the BLS occupation of political scientist, which had 6,100 jobs in 2025. Use the figures below as a proxy for that occupation, not as a guaranteed salary range for political analyst roles generally.

How to compare education and job options

Compare opportunities across the dimensions that shape the actual work and its requirements:

  • Specialty: domestic politics, comparative politics, international affairs, campaigns, policy or public opinion.
  • Employer: government, campaigns, think tanks, advocacy, consulting or academia.
  • Methods: qualitative research, statistics and surveys, or a combination.
  • Entry requirements: stated degree expectations and whether the vacancy is genuinely entry-level.
  • Work product: research papers, briefings, forecasts, communications or advocacy analysis.
  • Compensation context: location, employer sector and whether a published figure describes the same occupation and experience level.

Sources and scope

The occupational education, work, wage and outlook information above comes from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook profile for political scientists, last modified August 27, 2026; wage figures are for May 2025 and projections cover 2025–2035. Additional skills information is available in O*NET’s Political Scientists profile. The example federal vacancy is a specific, potentially closed or changed announcement on USAJOBS.
