To avoid surprise charges on a cruise, check the full booking terms for your exact sailing, budget for recurring gratuities and the extras you plan to use, ask your mobile carrier about shipboard roaming, and review your onboard account during the trip. A cruise fare does not automatically include every service or purchase; what is covered depends on the line, fare, ship, package and sometimes cabin category.
What extra costs should you budget for on a cruise?
Start with your booking invoice and the cruise line’s current terms, not just the advertised fare. Look for charges that recur, optional services you expect to use, and rules that can leave you paying for a cancellation. There is no universal list of extras: inclusions and charges vary by line and booking.

- Daily gratuities or service charges: These may be charged per guest per day, unless prepaid or included under your booking terms.
- Gratuities on purchases: Drinks, dining, room service, minibar, spa and salon purchases may carry separate automatic gratuities or service charges.
- Connectivity: Ship Wi-Fi may cost extra, and cellular roaming at sea can be billed by your mobile carrier.
- Optional purchases: Some beverages, dining, experiences and nursery care may be paid extras. Selected suite categories or packages may include some benefits.
- Excursions: Cancellation deadlines and refund rules differ by activity and cruise line; late cancellation may leave a charge.
For example, Royal Caribbean lists internet, premium experiences, some beverages and dining, and nursery care among possible paid extras, while some suite categories include selected benefits. Check your own fare and ship rather than assuming those examples apply to every booking: Royal Caribbean’s fare-inclusions FAQ.

Find out whether daily gratuities are already included, prepaid, or due through your onboard account. Then check separately for per-purchase gratuities; paying the daily amount does not necessarily cover those.

Rates below are examples from the cruise lines’ published policies, not industry-wide prices. Royal Caribbean’s FAQ, checked in 2026, lists $18.50 per guest per day for nonsuite accommodations and $21 per guest per day for suites. Its policy also identifies automatic gratuities on certain beverage, dining, room-service, minibar, spa and salon purchases. Applicability can depend on booking terms; confirm the current amount on your invoice and the live policy: Royal Caribbean’s service-gratuities FAQ.
Norwegian Cruise Line publishes $20 per guest per day for Club Balcony Suite and below, and $25 per guest per day for The Haven and Suites, for bookings made on or after January 1, 2023. Its policy also lists a 4.275% Pre Paid Service Charge GET Tax for guests sailing to Hawaii. These are NCL-specific terms, and the page’s booking-date condition matters; check your sailing’s policy and invoice. NCL says guests can prepay service charges: NCL’s service-charge policy.

A phone may connect to a shipboard cellular network automatically in international waters. You can incur carrier charges without placing a call: background data, received texts or calls that reach voicemail may count as usage. The cruise line does not set these roaming rates; your home carrier does, and charges may appear later on its bill.

- If you do not want cellular service at sea, turn on airplane mode. If you want to use Wi-Fi, re-enable Wi-Fi while airplane mode remains on. Phone settings vary, so test the setup before relying on it.
- Check your carrier’s account or bill for shipboard usage after the trip. Carnival says cellular billing disputes should be taken to the home carrier: Carnival’s mobile-phone FAQ.
Do not assume an ordinary mobile plan or an unlimited-data plan covers a ship’s maritime network. Confirm the specific cruise coverage and rates with the carrier.
How to decide whether to buy ship Wi-Fi
Ship Wi-Fi is often a separate purchase charged to the onboard account; do not count on it being included unless your booking says so. Compare the current plan price and device limits with how you expect to use the internet. A package is not automatically cheaper than paying only for the access you need.

Cellular roaming and ship Wi-Fi are separate options with different billing: the carrier sets roaming rates, while the cruise line sets its Wi-Fi terms. Decide whether you need either one, and verify each price before sailing.

How to avoid losing money on shore excursions
Read the cancellation deadline and refund terms for the specific activity before booking. A cancellation may incur a charge, especially close to departure or after the deadline. Carnival describes cancellation charges and says its Vacation Protection Plan can cover eligible nonrefundable shore-excursion cancellation charges; eligibility and exclusions apply. NCL also describes a late-cancellation case that can result in a full charge. Check the current activity terms and any protection plan wording rather than assuming a refund: Carnival’s excursion FAQ; NCL’s shore-excursion information.
Compare the cancellation rules and practical arrangements for the particular port and activity. The policies do not establish that booking through the cruise line is always cheaper or safer than making other arrangements.
How to keep your onboard account under control
Purchases and charges may be placed on the onboard account and settled through the payment method you provided. Check the line’s account activity or statement during the cruise, keep receipts, and contact guest services promptly if an entry does not match a purchase. Interface and statement-update frequency vary by line; ask how to view your account onboard. Carnival says its onboard account is settled with the bank when the cruise returns: Carnival’s onboard-account FAQ.
Ask your cruise line and bank how onboard authorizations and final settlement work before choosing a payment method. NCL advises against designating a debit card for the onboard account: NCL’s onboard-payment FAQ. Do not assume a particular authorization amount or release time; those details can depend on the line and card issuer.
Quick Recap
A practical cruise-charge checklist
Before booking and final payment
- Compare the full invoice with the advertised fare, including taxes and fees, gratuities, package costs and any stated service charges.
- Check which drinks, dining, Wi-Fi, excursions and other services your fare or cabin actually includes.
- Price only the extras you expect to use; compare current package terms with likely use.
- Read excursion cancellation deadlines and refund conditions before paying.
- Ask your carrier about shipboard roaming coverage, rates and billing.
- Choose whether to prepay gratuities only after confirming what is included or already charged.
While onboard and at the end of the trip
- Review account activity regularly, keep receipts and ask about unexpected entries while still onboard.
- Keep cellular roaming off if you do not intend to use it.
- Before leaving, review the final statement when possible and save a copy of the folio.
- Raise onboard-account errors with the cruise line; take cellular-billing disputes to the carrier that billed them.
- Keep enough available credit or funds for account activity, and check with the line and issuer about payment authorizations and settlement.
