Before sending a yacht deposit, verify the actual vessel, the person or company taking your money, the written terms, and the payment route independently. A convincing listing, certificate, escrow website, payment confirmation, or AIS display is not proof on its own. For a purchase, arrange an independent survey and check the vessel’s identity and ownership records; for a charter, verify the operator and applicable safety credentials before paying.
Start with a pause-and-verify rule
Do not let urgency, a low price, or a polished online presence substitute for verification. Find the seller’s or operator’s contact information yourself rather than relying only on a link, phone number, or email in the listing. Ask specific questions, request the relevant documents and full written terms, and take time to check them with the appropriate authority or an independent professional.
- Pause if the other party rushes you, refuses a visit or inspection, avoids ownership or operating details, or insists that you use its own escrow service or shipper.
- Be wary of generic messages, no willingness to speak by phone, acceptance of a sight-unseen sale, or disinterest in negotiating. These are reasons to investigate further, not proof by themselves that a seller is fraudulent.
- Do not treat an unusually low price or a demand to decide immediately as a bargain. The FTC’s travel guidance identifies both as warning signs and recommends researching the company and getting the terms before signing or paying: FTC: Avoid Scams When You Travel.
Before buying a yacht
See the vessel and match its identity
Arrange to see the actual boat, in person or through a trusted local representative. Compare it with the listing, record the hull identification number (HIN), and match that number against the title, registration, and sale documents. Check ownership, title, and registration with the relevant state or flag authority using contact details you locate independently.
A certificate image or live tracking display is not enough. The International Maritime Organization warns that fraudulent registration operators can create authentic-looking websites, registrations can expire or be terminated, and AIS identity data can be manipulated. Verify a registration claim through the authority itself rather than a site or link provided by the seller: IMO: Fraudulent registration and fraudulent registries of ships.

Use an independent surveyor
For a substantial purchase, commission a qualified surveyor whose work is appropriate to the vessel and who is independent of the seller, broker, and repair parties. A survey can describe condition, estimate value, identify safety deficiencies, and inform price negotiations; it is not a substitute for verifying title or the seller’s authority to sell.
Compare surveyors by experience with the boat’s type, independence, scope of survey, relevant professional affiliations, and the written deliverable. Do not rely on a surveyor simply because the seller or broker recommends them. BoatU.S.’s Boat Buyers Guide discusses survey scope and buyer checks.

Put the deal and representation in writing
Use a written sale contract that identifies the parties and vessel and states the price, included equipment, condition, delivery arrangements, contingencies, and documents to be transferred. For cross-border or otherwise complex ownership and title questions, get advice from a qualified local professional.
Clarify whom a broker represents and how fees or commission work. A seller-side broker represents the seller’s interests; a buyer’s broker may represent the buyer under a separate arrangement. Do not assume a broker represents both parties.

Choose escrow independently
If you use escrow, select and verify the service independently using contact details you sourced yourself. Do not trust a link or escrow page solely because the seller sent it. BoatU.S. documents fake escrow services recommended by purported sellers, as well as counterfeit cashier’s checks and money orders and fake PayPal payment confirmations.
Before booking a yacht charter
Verify the booking and the operator
Before paying, get the operator’s legal identity, the actual vessel name and identity, itinerary, passenger capacity, captain and crew details, total price and extra charges, and a written agreement with cancellation and refund terms. Contact the operator through details you found independently, confirm that the listing information matches, and search independently for complaints. The FTC’s travel guidance is general consumer advice; its charter-flight checklist concerns flights and should not be treated as a yacht-licensing check.

Check U.S. passenger-for-hire requirements where they apply
For a U.S. passenger-for-hire charter, the U.S. Coast Guard’s August 31, 2026 guidance advises passengers to verify that the captain has a Merchant Mariner Credential and a safety plan. For a vessel carrying more than six passengers, ask to see its Coast Guard-issued Certificate of Inspection, commonly displayed on the vessel. These checks and the passenger threshold are specific to the U.S. context described by the Coast Guard; requirements elsewhere, and for other vessel activities, can differ. Check with the relevant local maritime authority about a particular operation.
Review the contract, including whether the owner can choose the captain and crew. The Coast Guard warns that if its crew ends an illegal charter voyage, passengers may not recover their payment from the operator. In its August 31, 2026 release, the Coast Guard Southeast District reported stopping more than 100 illegal charter operations there since January 2026. That is a regional enforcement count, not an estimate of the proportion of charters that are illegal.

Choose a payment method you can challenge
An exclusive demand for bank transfer or wire, cryptocurrency, payment app, or gift card is a major warning sign. The FTC’s general payment-scam guidance says such an unexpected payment-only demand is probably a scam and recommends using a credit card when possible: FTC: A way to spot scams: how someone asks you to pay.
The FTC reported more than $4 billion in losses in the prior year to scams paid by bank transfer and cryptocurrency in its 2026 alert. That figure covers broad scam-payment categories; it is not yacht-specific. A payment method alone cannot establish that a transaction is legitimate, so verify the recipient and terms before authorizing any payment.
Recognize overpayment and refund traps
Never refund an overpayment or forward excess money to a shipper based on an email, screenshot, or payment notification. One documented pattern is for a supposed buyer to send a counterfeit cashier’s check or money order for more than the agreed price, then ask the seller to send the excess to a shipper; the original payment later proves worthless. Fake payment confirmations can create the same pressure. Confirm a payment directly with your financial institution before treating it as settled, and do not send money onward.
If you already sent money
- Contact the bank, card issuer, transfer service, or payment platform immediately. Report suspected fraud and ask whether the transaction can be stopped, recalled, or reversed.
- Preserve the listing, contract, messages, payment details, and screenshots. Do not delete communications or rely on further assurances from the person who requested payment.
- In the United States, report a travel scam to the FTC and the relevant state attorney general, as the FTC travel guidance recommends.
What is—and is not—established about yacht scams
There is no reliable yacht-specific national or international statistic in the cited material that estimates how common these scams are. The FTC’s payment-loss figure covers scams generally, while the Coast Guard’s enforcement count concerns its Southeast District. Neither figure predicts the risk of an individual sale or booking.
There is also no single international yacht-charter licensing or refund standard that can be applied everywhere. Requirements depend on the vessel, activity, operating area, and governing law. For a particular charter, check the relevant maritime authority or consult qualified local counsel.
