American Airlines’ new checked-bag charges are not automatic for every traveler. On eligible trips, AAdvantage status members, many qualifying AAdvantage cardholders, premium-cabin passengers and active-duty U.S. military personnel may still get checked bags free. The fee also varies by route, fare, ticket date and whether you pay at the airport or prepay online. For flights to Canada, check the exact itinerary and allowance in American’s current fee table before relying on a general price.
When American’s new bag fees apply
American announced higher checked-bag fees for specified routes and tickets. The dates and amounts differ by fare and change, so there is no single new fee that applies to every flight to Canada or other destinations.
- For tickets booked on or after April 9, 2026, American announced airport fees of $50 for the first checked bag and $60 for the second on affected domestic routes—including Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands—and short-haul international routes. Prepaying on aa.com or in the American app reduces those first- and second-bag charges by $5 each. The announced third-bag fee for the domestic/U.S.-Canada category is $200. American’s announcement describes the affected categories.
- For domestic Basic Economy tickets purchased from May 18, 2026, the announced first- and second-bag charges are $55 and $65 at the airport, or $50 and $60 when prepaid online or in the app. Basic Economy changes also apply to specified markets in Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America and South America.
These U.S.-dollar figures should not be applied indiscriminately to every Canada itinerary. American’s fee table gives route- and fare-specific rates, uses ticket issue dates for some distinctions, and provides a Canadian-dollar version. For travel within or between Canada and the U.S., tickets issued from May 18, 2026, show first-bag charges of C$50–C$59 in Main Cabin and C$55–C$65 in Basic Economy; online rates are lower. The range reflects the applicable fee-table conditions, not a single guaranteed price. Check the current checked-baggage fee table for your route, fare and ticket date rather than converting or combining these amounts with the U.S.-dollar announcement.
Who can still get a checked bag free
AAdvantage status members
American says all AAdvantage status members continue to receive complimentary bags on American Airlines flights. The applicable allowance can depend on the flight and fare, so confirm the benefit shown for your reservation. American’s announcement states the status-member exception.

Eligible AAdvantage credit-card members
American says most AAdvantage cardholders get their first eligible checked bag free on domestic American itineraries. Its Basic Economy guidance is more specific: the card exception applies only when traveling within the U.S. and Canada on flights marketed and operated by American. The page names Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Elite, Platinum Select, Business World Elite and Globe cards. Do not assume every card, itinerary or operating carrier qualifies; verify the precise card benefit and reservation.
Premium-cabin passengers and active-duty U.S. military
American says passengers in premium cabins on domestic and international flights continue to receive complimentary bags, and active-duty U.S. military personnel receive complimentary bags on American flights. Check the allowance for the specific trip, particularly if your itinerary includes another operating carrier.

A complimentary-bag benefit may not remove every possible charge. American notes that fees are per person, each way, and some fees may still apply even after upgrading to a product that includes free checked bags. The allowance displayed for your exact itinerary is the practical reference.

- Find the ticket date. Note when the ticket was purchased or issued; American’s announcement and fee table use different date language for different changes.
- Identify your fare. Check whether the reservation is Basic Economy or another fare, since the new Basic Economy charges have separate terms.
- Check the route and direction. Confirm the destinations, whether the flight is within or between Canada and the U.S., and the applicable fee-table category.
- Count the bags and choose payment timing. Fees depend on how many bags you check, and prepayment may cost less than airport payment for the affected category.
- Check benefits against the operating carrier. Look for AAdvantage status, the exact eligible card, a premium-cabin allowance or active-duty military eligibility. For the Basic Economy card exception, confirm the flight is both marketed and operated by American and is within the U.S. and Canada.
- Review the allowance for the reservation. Use American’s current fee table and the bag allowance shown for the exact itinerary; do not rely on a general headline amount.
Can a carry-on replace a checked bag?
American’s Basic Economy guidance allows one carry-on and one personal item. Packing within the current size limits can help avoid checking a bag, but it does not guarantee that a carry-on will stay in the cabin: Basic Economy passengers board last, and overhead-bin space may be full. Check American’s current size rules and be prepared for a gate-check if bins fill.
