Assess Wesfarmers shares by looking beyond the group’s diversification: test whether its earnings and cash flow can withstand weaker consumer demand, rising costs, higher debt-servicing costs and delays or weaker returns from major projects. For the year ended 30 June 2026, the company reported A$47,274 million in revenue and A$2,874 million in statutory net profit after tax (NPAT), alongside higher net debt and lower operating cash flow. Those results provide a starting point for a risk assessment, not proof that the shares are fairly valued or that future dividends are secure.
What does Wesfarmers’ business mix mean for risk?
Wesfarmers is a diversified Australian group with large retail businesses, as well as health, chemicals and fertilisers, industrial and safety operations, and a lithium joint venture. Different businesses face different demand and cost pressures, which can spread exposure across the portfolio. But diversification does not eliminate risks shared across the group, such as weaker economic conditions, funding pressures, supply-chain disruption or poor execution.
Retail is a particularly important part of the earnings mix. The scale of Bunnings and Kmart means that changes in household spending, competition, wages or stock availability may matter more to group earnings than the number of businesses in the portfolio alone suggests. Meanwhile, lithium adds exposure to commodity prices and project delivery, rather than acting as a dependable offset to retail risks.
What do the latest full-year figures say?
Wesfarmers announced its FY2026 full-year results on 27 August 2026, covering the year ended 30 June 2026. Read the reported figures alongside the company’s explanations and outlook; a single year or ratio cannot establish how resilient the business will be through a different set of conditions.
#1 Best Overall
| Measure | FY2026 result | Comparison or context |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | A$47,274 million | Up 3.4% on FY2025, as reported. |
| Statutory NPAT | A$2,874 million | Down 1.8% on reported FY2025. Excluding significant items, FY2026 NPAT of A$2,874 million was up 8.3% on adjusted FY2025 NPAT of A$2,653 million; the adjusted comparison differs because FY2025 included significant items. |
| EBIT | A$4,493 million | Up 0.6% on FY2025, as reported. Excluding significant items, FY2026 EBIT of A$4,493 million was up 7.3% on adjusted FY2025 EBIT of A$4,186 million. |
| Operating cash flow | A$4,272 million | Down 6.5% on FY2025, as reported. |
| Free cash flow | A$3,992 million | FY2026 figure reported by the company. |
| Net financial debt | A$5,295 million | Up 25.1% on FY2025, as reported. |
| Debt to EBITDA | 1.9 times | Compared with 1.7 times in FY2025. |
| Ordinary dividend | A$2.22 per share | FY2026 total ordinary dividend; fully franked and up 7.8% on FY2025. |
These measures point to questions to follow up, not a verdict on their own. For example, statutory NPAT declined against reported FY2025 while adjusted NPAT grew against an adjusted comparison. Operating cash flow also fell while net financial debt increased. To understand whether earnings are converting into cash, consider working-capital needs and investment spending as well as profit.
The A$2.22 per share ordinary dividend is not the same as the company’s separate 150 cents-per-share capital management distribution paid in December 2025, which comprised a capital return and a special dividend. Neither the FY2026 ordinary dividend nor that one-off distribution establishes future dividend safety or the yield available at a current share price.
How exposed are the main divisions?
The FY2026 results report division-level earnings before tax and comparisons excluding significant items. The figures show how earnings growth was distributed across the portfolio; they do not guarantee that the same divisions will grow, or retain the same weight, in future years.

| Division | FY2026 earnings before tax | Change | Risk lens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bunnings Group | A$2,455 million | Up 5.1% | Household spending, housing activity, competition, wages, supply costs, stock availability and store or digital execution. |
| Kmart Group | A$1,109 million | Up 6.0% | Consumer budgets, discretionary demand, cost pressures, competition and the ability to maintain customer value perceptions. |
| WesCEF | A$473 million | Up 18.5% | Commodity and input prices, operating costs, supply conditions and lithium project delivery. |
| Officeworks | A$165 million | Down 22.2% | Trading conditions and the delivery of transformation initiatives; the company reported transformation costs. |
| Wesfarmers Health | A$76 million | Up 18.8% | Operating and supply conditions, working-capital requirements and ongoing transformation. |
| Industrial and Safety | A$76 million | Down 26.9% | Trading and execution; Blackwoods and Workwear Group transitioned to Bunnings Group effective 1 July 2026. |
Wesfarmers said its FY2026 outlook remained uncertain because of factors including inflation, house prices, interest rates and tax settings, and that business costs remained elevated. It expected higher labour, energy and supply-chain costs to persist during FY2027. The company said it intended to mitigate cost pressure through productivity, digitisation and technology. For an investor, the test is whether subsequent results show those efforts translating into margins and cash flow, rather than assuming planned efficiencies will fully offset costs.
Segment boundaries also matter when comparing years: Blackwoods and Workwear Group moved from Industrial and Safety to Bunnings Group effective 1 July 2026. Historical divisional results therefore may not map neatly onto the new organisation.
What should you check about debt and cash flow?
FY2026 operating cash flow was A$4,272 million, down 6.5% year on year, while net financial debt was A$5,295 million, up 25.1%, and debt to EBITDA rose to 1.9 times from 1.7 times. The results attributed some of the lower cash flow to working-capital investment in WesCEF and Health, including inventory held to address market and supply disruption. Inventory can support product availability, but it also ties up cash until it is sold and collected.

Wesfarmers expected net capital expenditure of A$1,300–1,500 million in FY2027 and higher borrowing costs, citing higher net debt, increased capital expenditure and a higher cost of funds. That is company guidance and outlook, not an achieved outcome. Compare later cash generation with working-capital movements and capital expenditure, and watch whether debt and interest costs rise or ease as investment proceeds.
The company’s 2026 half-year financial statements identify liquidity, market and credit risks. Market risk includes foreign currency, interest rates and commodity prices. In practical terms, review whether the group can fund planned investment and meet obligations while facing changing financing costs, currency movements or input prices; do not treat a debt-to-EBITDA ratio in isolation as a complete liquidity assessment.

How should you assess Wesfarmers’ lithium exposure?
Wesfarmers’ lithium exposure combines commodity-price risk with the execution risk of bringing a downstream refinery into steady operation. Keep the two stages of the project distinct: producing spodumene concentrate is not the same as producing and selling qualified lithium hydroxide.

The FY2026 results reported Mt Holland spodumene concentrate production of 209 kilotonnes, above guidance and nameplate capacity. The same release said intermittent odour issues affected the refinery ramp-up throughout FY2026. Management said mitigation work began late in FY2026 and expected production rates to accelerate in the second half of FY2027 as further solutions were implemented; product qualification with offtake partners was to continue during ramp-up. These are management’s stated actions and expectations, not confirmation that the schedule or production targets will be met.
Wesfarmers’ 2026 half-year statements said there were no impairment indicators for Mt Holland at 31 December 2025, while also identifying sensitivity of the project’s cash-generating unit to adverse movements in lithium prices, discount rates, operating costs and production volumes. The statements warn that significant adverse movements in key assumptions could lead to a future impairment. Investors can track realised output and costs, ramp-up progress, qualification and sales, capital needs, and changes in the assumptions used to assess the asset.

Wesfarmers’ 2025 Annual Report identifies risk categories including digital disruption; portfolio management; major infrastructure and physical security; product distribution and safety; conduct and reputation; human rights and modern slavery in operations and supply chains; climate and nature; process safety; clinical governance; franchisee compliance; geopolitical supply-chain and input-price impacts; increased use of AI; and liquidity and funding access. These are company-identified categories, not evidence that each risk has occurred or will have a material financial effect. The list is from the 2025 report and should not be read as a complete FY2026 risk register.

The company’s 2025 climate disclosure describes both physical and transition risks. It identifies extreme rain, heat, dry conditions and fire weather as physical risk drivers, and says extreme weather has caused property damage, operational and supply-chain disruption, and effects on stores, team members, customers and communities. Transition exposure varies with a business’s model, emissions profile, footprint and value chain. When assessing these risks, consider how they could affect specific operations, costs, assets or supply rather than treating climate exposure as identical across the group.
How can you compare Wesfarmers with another investment?
Use the same questions for each company or asset so that a broad business mix is not mistaken for lower risk, and so that risks with different effects are not reduced to a single headline measure.
- Earnings mix: Compare retail and consumer exposure with industrial, health and lithium earnings, including how much each contributes and whether that mix is changing.
- Economic sensitivity: Assess exposure to household budgets, discretionary purchases, housing conditions, interest rates and inflation.
- Balance sheet and funding: Compare debt, leverage, liquidity, financing costs and planned investment needs using consistent reporting periods and definitions.
- Cash generation and distributions: Consider cash flow after working-capital changes and capital expenditure, and distinguish recurring ordinary dividends from special dividends or capital returns.
- Project and commodity exposure: Compare sensitivity to commodity prices, exchange rates, commissioning, product qualification, operating costs and additional capital requirements.
- Operational and external exposure: Consider supply chains, safety, technology, regulation, climate, geography and compliance.
- Valuation and expected return: Build a separate view of price, valuation assumptions and possible returns. Wesfarmers’ reported results do not establish its current share valuation or peer-relative attractiveness.
