Before buying an AI-infrastructure vendor’s stock, look for a chain of evidence: AI-linked revenue already recognized, orders that can turn into funded deployments, capacity that can actually be delivered, and economics that convert growth into cash. Treat commitments as forward-looking signals and industry spending forecasts as forecasts—not as completed sales or proof that a particular company will profit.
Start with what the company has actually sold
Begin with the vendor’s latest annual and quarterly filings. Identify the business segment that sells into AI infrastructure and record its revenue, growth, disclosed units, gross margin, and cash generation. Then check whether management specifically attributes the results to AI-related products or services, and whether the segment also includes substantial non-AI business.

The distinction matters because the industry’s expansion does not automatically translate into sales for every supplier. A company may sell accelerators, CPUs, servers, networking equipment, colocation capacity, or compute services; each occupies a different place in the buildout and may recognize demand at a different point.

Example: AMD’s Data Center segment
AMD reported 2025 Data Center revenue of $16.6 billion, up 32% from $12.6 billion in 2024. The company said the increase was primarily driven by EPYC processors and Instinct GPU accelerators. This is a historical, company-reported segment result and evidence of realized revenue—not a forecast or assurance that the growth will continue. The segment figure is also not a measure of GPU revenue alone.

Keep realized results separate from signals and forecasts
Evidence of demand has different levels of certainty. A useful first pass is to label each figure before comparing it with another:
- Realized: customer deployments and revenue recognized in the company’s financial statements. These show activity that has already reached the reported-results stage.
- Forward-looking company signals: orders, backlog, remaining performance obligations, supply agreements, customer contracts, and capital plans. These may indicate intended future activity, but their definitions, cancellation terms, funding, and delivery conditions matter.
- Industry forecasts: estimates of future spending or market size. These provide context for the opportunity, not evidence that a named vendor has won business or will earn an attractive return.
Keep these categories in separate columns in your notes. NVIDIA cautions that its demand estimates may be inaccurate and that customers can delay purchases if infrastructure or capital is unavailable, or if technology adoption is gradual. A large forecast or commitment therefore cannot stand in for completed deployment and recognized revenue.
Inspect orders and commitments for quality
When a company reports a backlog, purchase obligation, supply commitment, or contract balance, read the filing’s definition rather than assuming the figure means the same thing across vendors. Record who is committed, whether the commitment can be cancelled or deferred, what conditions must be met, when shipment or service is expected, and whether the customer has a funded and powered site.

For a supplier, follow the signal into subsequent periods: did equipment ship, did the company recognize revenue, and did inventory, receivables, and operating cash flow move in a way consistent with the sales? Rising commitments can indicate plans and can expose the supplier to purchasing or capacity risk without proving end-customer utilization or profitable absorption.

Two reported figures that measure different things
- NVIDIA: the company reported $279 billion of supply and capacity commitments as of July 26, 2026. This is a commitment measure, not equivalent to revenue or cash received. Its filing also describes risks that can delay customer deployments.
- Super Micro Computer: its FY2026 filing reported $34.2 billion of current obligations related to non-cancelable purchase commitments as of June 30, 2026. This is an obligation measure in the company’s specific operating and filing context, not evidence of an equal amount of end-customer demand.
These amounts should not be treated as directly comparable: they are different kinds of measures reported by different companies at different dates. Use each company’s definitions and surrounding disclosures to understand what it is obligated to deliver or purchase.
Check whether the infrastructure can be delivered
A customer’s plan only becomes usable capacity after several dependencies are resolved. Map the project through site and power availability, a completed building shell, cooling and electrical systems, grid connection, equipment delivery, networking, and customer readiness. For each disclosed project, distinguish an announcement from a permitted, financed, under-construction, powered, equipped, or revenue-generating site. These are useful analytical statuses, not a universal industry reporting standard.
NVIDIA identifies land, power, shell, and capital as crucial to customer data-center buildouts and warns that shortages can affect its financial performance. Equinix has cited power limitations and equipment-delivery delays. Its expansion decisions consider customer demand, available power and capacity, network access, required investment, and the expected time to free-cash-flow break-even.

Test whether growth can pay for itself
Demand is more compelling when it is accompanied by healthy utilization, pricing, margins, operating cash flow, and returns on incremental capital. Examine how much investment is needed to serve the demand, how the company funds it, and whether cash arrives before or after the company must pay suppliers or build capacity.
- Review gross margin and operating cash flow alongside revenue growth; rising sales alone do not establish attractive economics.
- Check debt, equity financing, customer concentration, supplier purchase obligations, and the timing of payments and collections.
- For data-center operators, examine utilization and the capital required to add capacity. Equinix specifically includes investment required and expected time to free-cash-flow break-even among its expansion criteria.
- Ask whether the reported segment’s growth is sufficiently tied to AI to support the thesis, rather than relying on a broader segment label.
Super Micro Computer’s FY2026 filing reports material financing activity as well as the $34.2 billion of current purchase-commitment obligations noted above. Read financing disclosures and obligations together: neither a large commitment nor a large market opportunity by itself establishes that expansion will produce sustainable cash returns.

Chronoscale’s FY2026 Form 10-K relays estimates from UBS, IDC, and Gartner. Chronoscale says it did not independently verify the estimates and warns that forecasts are uncertain. The figures below are therefore secondhand forecasts presented in a company filing, not independently verified actual spending or direct estimates reviewed here. Their scopes differ, so do not add them together.
| Attribution in Chronoscale’s FY2026 Form 10-K | Measure and forecast | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| UBS estimates | Global AI capital expenditure: approximately $423 billion in 2025, approximately $571 billion in 2026, and approximately $1.3 trillion by 2030 | Global AI capex estimates as reported secondhand by Chronoscale; the underlying UBS publication was not independently verified here. |
| IDC estimates | Worldwide AI infrastructure hardware spending: approximately $487 billion in 2026 and more than $1 trillion by 2029 | Chronoscale defines the measure as servers, storage, and networking, excluding software and services. Reported secondhand; not independently verified against IDC’s original publication. |
| Gartner estimate | Approximately $37.5 billion in 2026 spending on AI-optimized IaaS, with approximately 55% expected to support inference | End-user spending estimate reported secondhand by Chronoscale; not independently verified against Gartner’s original publication. |
Before using a forecast in your own analysis, note its publisher, publication or filing date, geography, spending category, and horizon. A forecast for hardware, one for capital expenditure, and one for AI-optimized infrastructure services describe different measures. None tells you, without company-level evidence, which vendor will capture the spending or what its margins will be.

Compare vendors on the same five questions
Use a consistent scorecard rather than comparing one company’s revenue with another’s commitments or an industry forecast:
- Realized AI-linked revenue: What segment reports it, how quickly is it growing, and how much of the segment is clearly attributable to AI?
- Commitment quality: What do orders and obligations mean under the filing’s definitions, and can they be cancelled, delayed, or conditioned?
- Deliverable capacity: Are power, sites, equipment, networking, financing, and customer readiness in place, or are they still project dependencies?
- Customer concentration: How dependent is the vendor on a small number of cloud providers or other large buyers?
- Economics and cash conversion: Are margins, utilization, capital intensity, financing needs, and cash flow consistent with profitable growth?
For each company, write down the latest fiscal period and keep it distinct from calendar-year market estimates. Update the scorecard as results arrive: a forward-looking signal gains credibility when later filings show delivery, revenue recognition, and cash conversion.
What this assessment can—and cannot—tell you
This framework helps test whether AI-infrastructure demand is appearing in a vendor’s results and whether the vendor seems able to deliver it economically. It does not value the stock, establish a fair price, or show that strong demand guarantees shareholder returns. Share price, valuation, competitive position, execution, and broader financial risks still matter to an investment decision.
The evidence cited here comes from company filings and a registrant’s reporting of third-party forecasts. The cited material does not independently establish how major cloud customers’ capex plans compare with suppliers’ reported demand. Check each company’s newest filing and fiscal period before relying on any figure; fiscal years and calendar years are not interchangeable.
