Apply or check your SRD grant status through the official SASSA SRD website. Use the application route that matches your status, enter accurate details and a phone number registered in your name, and complete any identity checks requested. Save your confirmation and check each month’s decision: an approved month does not by itself mean payment has been processed. If a month is declined and you believe the reason is wrong, use the portal’s current reconsideration or appeal option and keep its confirmation.
Who may qualify for the SRD grant?
Eligibility is not based on unemployment alone. SASSA’s applicant declaration and its January 2026 qualification notice describe requirements that include living in South Africa, being over 18 and under 60, having insufficient means, and falling within a recognized citizenship, residency or permit category. Applicants must also meet conditions relating to other social grants, UIF, NSFAS or other government support, and government-funded institutions; the declaration says they must not unreasonably refuse employment or educational opportunities. SASSA verifies details against records, and the applicable rules determine the decision. Read the current declarations and portal prompts before applying: official SRD portal and SASSA qualification notice, 19 January 2026.
The grant value is R370 per month in SASSA’s 2026 materials. A Department of Social Development notice dated 17 February 2026 reported an announcement to extend it from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, while noting that amendments were still needed to operationalize the extension. Those dates are the reported announcement, not confirmation here that final regulations are in force; check current official notices for the applicable period: Department of Social Development notice, 17 February 2026.
How to apply for the SRD R370 grant
- Open the official portal. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za and select the pathway matching your status, such as South African ID holder or asylum seeker/special permit holder. Follow the prompts currently displayed. SASSA’s channel guidance is available through South African Government, 6 November 2025.
- Enter your own reachable phone number. SASSA uses the number for notifications, including verification requests. Keep access to it while the application is being processed.
- Provide accurate, current information. Complete the requested fields carefully, including banking details belonging to you. Report changes to your circumstances or contact details and update the information as instructed in the portal.
- Complete identity verification if requested. SASSA warns that failing to complete verification can make an application unsuccessful and prevent payment. If you do not have a smartphone or laptop, a SASSA office can assist with biometric identity verification, according to its 27 January 2026 notice.
- Save your application confirmation. Keep the reference or confirmation shown by the portal. A dated screenshot or download of the confirmation and later status or decline reason is useful for your own records; SASSA’s materials do not describe that record-keeping as a separate application requirement.
How to check whether your application or monthly period is approved
Return to the official SRD portal to check the status. SASSA verifies eligibility monthly, so an earlier approval should not be treated as a decision for every later month. The definitions below come from SASSA’s status guide, which still refers to the older R350 grant; treat them as explanations of the terms it describes, not a guarantee that the current portal layout or wording is unchanged: SASSA status guide.

#1 Best Overall
- Application complete: You completed the application process; SASSA says verification continues monthly.
- Bank details pending: SASSA has not received your banking details or payment preference.
- Pending for a month: Verification for that particular period is not complete. Check the portal again later.
- Approved for a month: That period was approved. Check the pay-day field to see whether payment has been processed; the status guide says that if no pay day is shown, payment has not yet been processed.
- Declined: The portal displays a reason for that period. Read it before deciding whether to appeal.
- Canceled: The older guide describes a reinstatement route for a canceled application. Check the current portal prompts for the available action.
How to appeal or request reconsideration of a declined period
If the decline reason appears invalid, SASSA’s status guide directs applicants to request reconsideration through the official website, and its January 2026 notice confirms an appeal right. The precise labels and navigation may change. A SASSA regional notice from 11 November 2024 described logging in to the SRD site, selecting the appeal option and then DSD Appeals; use the current options shown by the portal rather than relying on that older route as an unchanged instruction: SASSA regional notice, 11 November 2024.
- Read the reason given for the declined month and check whether your identity, contact, banking or other application details need correction.
- Sign in at the official SRD portal and choose its current appeal or reconsideration option for the relevant period.
- Explain clearly why you believe the decision is incorrect and provide information requested by the portal.
- Submit the request and save its confirmation, along with the decision and reason, for your records.
The reviewed official materials do not establish a reliable current deadline for each monthly R370 appeal. Submit promptly, and check the portal or ask SASSA for the applicable deadline if it is not shown or your case is unclear. Do not assume a 30-, 60- or 90-day period.

SASSA may verify personal and financial information with government bodies and banks. Enter your ID, banking and verification information only through the official SASSA channel. Do not share one-time verification details with strangers or pay unofficial intermediaries to apply or appeal. See SASSA’s notice on biometric verification and fraud.
