After a raise, job change, second job, or new source of income, use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator to check whether your federal income tax payments are still on track. Gather recent pay statements and your latest federal return, enter your expected household income and tax details, then follow the result: update Form W-4 for wages, Form W-4P for periodic pension or annuity payments, or consider estimated payments for income that is not covered by withholding. Recheck if your circumstances change again. The estimator addresses federal income tax—not state withholding—and its result is an estimate, not a guaranteed refund or balance due.
What changes should prompt a withholding check?
A higher salary does not automatically mean you must change your W-4. But any material change can alter the amount of federal tax your household is likely to owe or the amount already being paid during the year. The practical question is whether your expected total tax is likely to be covered by withholding and estimated payments—not simply whether one paycheck is larger or smaller.

The IRS recommends reviewing withholding after personal or financial changes and checking it regularly. Its Tax Withholding Estimator is intended for workers and retirees; Publication 505 (2026), Tax Withholding and Estimated Tax describes factors that can change the calculation. As Publication 505 puts it, “Always check your withholding if there are personal or financial changes in your life or changes in the law that might change your tax liability.”

| Raise, reduced hours, or job loss | Expected wages for the whole year, federal income tax withheld so far, and how many paychecks remain. |
| New job or second job | Wages and withholding from every job, plus a spouse’s wages and withholding if you file jointly. One job’s withholding may not reflect household income from another job. |
| Freelance, gig, rental, investment, or other income | Expected income and any tax already paid through withholding or estimated payments. Some income has no withholding by default. |
| Marriage, divorce, child birth or adoption, or retirement | Any change in filing status, household income, credits, or deductions that affects your expected tax. |
| Changed deductions or credits | Your current-year estimate of adjustments, deductions, and credits rather than figures copied automatically from an earlier year. |
Publication 505 also identifies a home purchase, interest and dividends, capital gains, self-employment income, IRA distributions, and changes in adjustments, deductions, or credits as factors that may affect withholding. A change in income is a reason to review the numbers; the result may be to leave your W-4 as it is.

Think in terms of the household’s full-year picture. A raise may increase expected wages, while a job loss may reduce wages but leave other income unchanged. A spouse’s new job or a second job can add wages without automatically changing withholding on the first job. Likewise, a new investment or freelance income stream may affect the tax expected for the year even if your regular paycheck has not changed. Include each relevant source and the payments already made before deciding what action to take.
Gather the information before using the estimator
Use current-year estimates, not just last year’s paycheck or tax bill. The IRS advises using an estimate of current-year income alongside a recent return. For a 2026 calculation, Publication 505 points to the 2025 federal return and an estimate of 2026 income.
- Recent pay statements for you and, if filing jointly, your spouse. These help identify year-to-date wages and federal income tax withheld.
- Your most recent federal income tax return, for filing status and relevant deductions, credits, and other tax details.
- Expected wages from each job for the rest of the year, including a new job, a second job, or a changed work schedule.
- Estimates and records for other taxable income, such as freelance earnings, interest, dividends, capital gains, or rental income.
- Records of estimated tax payments already made and any other withholding.
- Current estimates of adjustments, deductions, and credits that may affect your tax.
Do not use an old W-4 as a substitute for this review. The form is a way to communicate withholding instructions to a payer; it is not, by itself, a calculation of your household’s complete tax liability.

That helps you avoid treating year-to-date income as if it were the whole year, or overlooking tax payments already made.
Run the current IRS Tax Withholding Estimator
- Open the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator. Use the live tool rather than a saved worksheet or an article’s reproduction of its calculations, because tax rules and the estimator can change.
- Enter the requested household and income information, including wages and withholding from relevant jobs, other income, and estimated payments.
- Enter applicable adjustments, deductions, and credits using your best current-year estimates. If a detail is uncertain, use a reasonable estimate and be prepared to run the calculation again when you have better information.
- Review the estimate of your federal income tax and compare it with withholding and payments already made. Pay attention to the tool’s recommendations for any remaining pay periods and for which job or payer should receive a revised form.
- If the estimate points to a change, use the result to complete the appropriate form and deliver it to the employer or payer. Keep a copy of what you submitted and check a later pay statement to confirm the change took effect.
The IRS says a typical estimator session takes about 25 minutes, though a simpler situation can take less time. The current tool does not ask for your name, Social Security number, address, or bank-account number; the IRS says responses are not saved or shared and are cleared when the browser closes. Its March 12, 2026 announcement says the tool was updated for that year’s law changes, including changes involving tips, overtime, car-loan interest, the senior deduction, family-related credits, homeownership, and charitable giving. The IRS describes it as free and available without a login. Because those features and rules are time-sensitive, use the live estimator for your own calculation.
The estimator is a planning aid, not a substitute for a complete tax return or individual tax advice. Its result depends on the information entered, and the IRS notes that it may not include every provision of the tax code. If your income or deductions are hard to estimate, use the most accurate figures available and revisit the calculation when your situation becomes clearer. A change in the estimate is a signal to consider an adjustment, not a promise that your final return will show a particular refund or amount due.

Choose the right form and put the adjustment in the right place
Wages: Form W-4
For wages, submit a new Form W-4 to your employer. Use the estimator’s result rather than changing entries by guesswork. If you want an additional fixed amount withheld from each paycheck, Step 4(c) is the field for that extra per-paycheck amount.
Recommended Free Tools
Step 4(c) is an amount in dollars per pay period, not a one-time payment toward the whole year. If the estimator or your own annual shortfall calculation indicates a total amount to cover, account for the paydays remaining in the year when converting it to a per-check amount. For example, if you allocate a portion of an estimated annual gap to one job, divide that job’s portion by its remaining paydays—not by the number of pay periods in a full year. The result is the additional amount to request on each remaining paycheck. This is a calculation method, not a recommended target amount; the appropriate total depends on your circumstances.
Periodic pension or annuity payments: Form W-4P
For periodic payments from a pension or annuity, use Form W-4P and submit it to the payer. A W-4 changes wage withholding; a W-4P addresses withholding from those pension or annuity payments. Follow the estimator’s instructions for the specific payer and payment.
More than one job or payer
When there are multiple jobs or pension payments, do not assume every W-4 should contain the same adjustment. The IRS estimator FAQ says that applicable Step 3 and Step 4 amounts should be placed on the W-4 or W-4P associated with the highest-paying job or payment; leave those fields blank or zero on the other jobs or pensions. Follow the estimator’s placement instructions for your case.
If you are working from an annual shortfall calculation in Publication 505, the IRS explains that an additional amount can be placed on one job or divided among jobs. To convert a job’s share into an amount per paycheck, divide that share by the number of paydays remaining for that job in the year. The remaining-payday count matters: an annual amount divided by all pay periods would understate the per-check adjustment if some of those paydays have already passed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a joint return, include both spouses’ wages and withholding in the estimator even when only one spouse is making a change. The goal is to estimate the household’s overall federal income tax, rather than make each job’s withholding look correct in isolation. The estimator’s instructions determine where to put applicable adjustments when multiple jobs or payments are involved; avoid duplicating the same entries across forms unless the tool tells you to do so.

Allow time for payroll processing
After receiving a revised W-4, an employer generally must put it into effect no later than the start of the first payroll period ending on or after 30 days from receipt, according to IRS guidance. Payroll timing can affect how many paychecks remain for the adjustment, so ask payroll when the change will appear and verify it on a subsequent statement.
Publication 505 (2026) also describes certain situations in which a new W-4 is required within 10 days—for example, some filing-status changes, starting another job after using multiple-job adjustments, certain raises at a second or third job, and specified reductions in credits or deductions previously entered. These are conditional 2026 rules, not a universal deadline after every raise or income change. Check the current publication for the exact conditions; get professional help if you are unsure whether a requirement applies.
When income is not covered by withholding
Freelance or gig income, interest, dividends, capital gains, prizes, and some rental income may not have federal income tax withheld when paid. The IRS describes federal income tax as a pay-as-you-go tax: the goal is to pay during the year, through withholding, estimated tax, or a combination, rather than wait until filing a return.
Two routes may help cover a gap. The better fit depends on the income source, timing, cash flow, and whether a wage or pension payer can withhold enough.
| Route | How it works | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Increase withholding | Ask an employer to withhold an additional amount per paycheck using W-4 Step 4(c), or adjust withholding from periodic pension or annuity payments using W-4P. | You receive wages or eligible pension or annuity payments and want extra tax withheld from those payments to help cover other income. |
| Make estimated tax payments | Use the Form 1040-ES worksheet and relevant IRS guidance to estimate payments toward expected tax not adequately covered by withholding. | Withholding is not enough or is not available to cover expected income tax on income such as self-employment earnings, interest, dividends, capital gains, or prizes. |
Employees may choose additional wage withholding to help cover self-employment, gig, or some rental income. Estimated payments are another option when withholding does not cover expected tax. These routes are not interchangeable in every situation: the amount depends on your expected income and tax details, and each requires current information. Use the IRS pay-as-you-go guidance and the Form 1040-ES worksheet for the applicable year. This guide does not set an individualized payment amount or due-date schedule.
Withholding may be administratively convenient if you still receive wages or periodic pension income and the payer can withhold enough to cover the additional expected tax. Estimated payments can be relevant when there is no suitable payer, or when withholding alone will not cover the expected amount. Compare the timing and cash flow as well: additional withholding is taken from paychecks or pension payments, while estimated payments require you to arrange payments during the year. Either way, keep records of amounts paid so they can be included in a later review.

Form 1040-ES includes a worksheet to help estimate payments, but do not assume that one flat amount will fit every person with freelance or investment income. Expected income, other withholding, and available credits affect the calculation. If the income changes substantially during the year, revisit your estimate. Consult current IRS instructions or a qualified tax professional for payment amounts, timing, and questions about whether estimated payments are appropriate.

What a W-4 change does—and does not—change
Form W-4 changes federal income tax withholding from wages. Form W-4P covers withholding from periodic pension or annuity payments. Neither form adjusts regular Social Security or Medicare withholding. The IRS estimator focuses on federal income tax and may not include every provision that affects an individual return, so the final tax can differ from its estimate.
Federal and state withholding are separate. The federal estimator and federal forms do not settle how much state income tax should be withheld; check with your state tax agency for state-specific forms and rules. For complicated household income, business income, or tax circumstances, consider consulting a qualified tax professional.
Also distinguish a withholding adjustment from a change in the tax you ultimately owe. A W-4 tells an employer how much federal income tax to take from wages; it does not alter the underlying tax calculation. Changing withholding can affect how much is paid during the year, while your final liability is determined when you file based on the applicable tax rules and your full circumstances.
Recheck when the numbers change again
A withholding adjustment is based on a snapshot of expected income and tax details. Run the estimator again if you start or stop work, your spouse’s pay changes, freelance or investment income grows, or your deductions or credits change materially. The IRS recommends a check each January and after a major change. If you adjust withholding during the year, another review in late December can help set withholding for the next year.
A practical follow-up is to compare a later pay statement with the change you requested. Confirm that the new federal income tax amount appears, then consider whether the remaining paychecks and updated income estimate still support the same adjustment. If payroll has not implemented the form as expected, ask the employer when it will take effect and use the actual timing in any updated estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I change my W-4 after a raise?
First run the current IRS Tax Withholding Estimator with your expected full-year household income, year-to-date withholding, pay statements, and recent federal return. A raise does not automatically require a W-4 change. If the estimator recommends one, submit an updated Form W-4 to your employer; use Step 4(c) for an additional dollar amount per paycheck when appropriate, and account for the paydays remaining in the year.
Should I change my W-4 if I get a second job?
Review withholding because a second job can change household income while the first job’s withholding may not reflect it. Enter wages and federal withholding from every job, and a spouse’s information if filing jointly, in the estimator. Follow its instructions about which job’s W-4 should contain applicable Step 3 or Step 4 amounts; the IRS estimator FAQ says these amounts generally go on the W-4 or W-4P for the highest-paying job or payment, with those fields blank or zero on the others.
How do I avoid owing taxes after starting freelance work?
Include expected freelance income in the IRS estimator along with wages, other income, withholding, estimated payments, deductions, and credits. Freelance income may not have federal income tax withheld. You may be able to increase withholding from wages or periodic pension income, make estimated tax payments using Form 1040-ES guidance, or use a combination. The right amount depends on your full-year tax situation; the estimator does not guarantee a particular balance or eliminate every risk.
How soon does an employer have to apply a new W-4?
IRS guidance says an employer generally must put a revised W-4 into effect no later than the start of the first payroll period ending on or after 30 days from receipt. Payroll timing can affect how many paychecks remain, so ask your employer when the change will show and verify it on a later pay statement.
Does a W-4 change state, Social Security, or Medicare withholding?
No. Form W-4 changes federal income tax withholding from wages; it does not adjust regular Social Security or Medicare withholding and does not determine state withholding. Contact your state tax agency about state forms and rules.
Do I need to change my W-4 every time my income changes?
Not necessarily. A material change is a reason to review your expected tax and payments, but the result may be to leave the W-4 as it is. Use current full-year estimates rather than changing the form based only on a larger or smaller paycheck. Certain specific situations described in IRS Publication 505 can require a new W-4 within 10 days, but that is not a universal deadline after every income change.
The Bottom Line
After a major income change, check your federal withholding with current household income, payments, and tax details in the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator. If it recommends an adjustment, submit a W-4 for wages or W-4P for periodic pension or annuity payments; for income without withholding, consider additional withholding, estimated payments, or both. Verify the change and review again if circumstances shift. State withholding is separate, and the estimator is not a guarantee of your final tax result.
